Thanks guys for the advice and kind thoughts. I think we have prioritized pretty well. As you can see from the helm chair question, I am down to the "ideally, I should I....?" kinds of things.

I can get to the bimini, so why not.

I am going to leave the EZ2CY on across the back of the aft deck. It is the first line of defense before the rear main salon windows and doors. I do plan on moving the aft deck furniture into the salon still.

At some point, you have just have to say the little "Your will be done Lord, not mine" prayer and let it go. It's almost like you want either nothing to happen or the worst that can happen, and not much in between.
 
i know the EZ2C is strong stuff but those winds are really tough on enclosures.

i believe you have teak doors on your 56, right? for Katrina i was stern to the wind here in miami (about 80kts, only) and the wind was forcing water in aroudn the edge of the doors. Depending on how side windows overlap on you boat, you may want to stuff paper towel or something similar in the overlap to prevent water from being forced in. Same with the galley windows.

water coming in thru the aft deck teak door was an eye opener... carpet got really wet! and that was only 80kts.
 
Pascal's right. plus once the stuff comes loose it will beat up the paint and anything around it. I had water pouring in thru the headliner from somewhere up on the bridge during Frances, so for Jeanne I got some of that NASCAR super duct tape and did every opening and hatch trims. I had way less leaks for Jeanne. But the glue from the tape was a PITA to get off. Once you can get back to the boat ASAP and get it opened up and dryed out before the mold starts.

Pascal............are you in Nantucket ?? Are you going to ride it out in the boat basin ?

I'm not sure what would be a better decision for Glittering Image ie batten her down and leave her at the slip which is in a very protected marina well behind a hurricane barrier or haul her out and take my chances of god knows what might be flying around the yard or her falling over or some other boat falling into her........

Got to decide soon....................

Good luck and stay dry. There are about 5 or 6 of us big boats holding up in Spooners Creek, Morehead City NC. I'm on the stand by list to be hauled, but you know how that works. Measured the pilings at high tide last night we have about 12 feet above the docks.

flying up tomorrow on Jet Blue via JFK, should be there aroudn 2pm. Yes, will ride it out at the BB. figure winds will be mostly southerly on that side so good protection vs northerly stuff and the long fetch in the harbor.

you shoudl be fine in fairhaven... which marina are you in? that hurricane barrier is a nice protection.
 
Tape: I was introduced to something better than duct tape when I first got to Miami. The "McGuyver guy" on the dock, Gil, gave me some of that metal tape that is used for air conditioning stuff. I think the label on it is Nasha, or something like that. As long as you put it on a very dry surface, it will stay there for years, sealing leaks, and when you want to remove it, it just peels off leaving no residue. It's a staple on my boat now. When applying it you have to press it out real well. After having cut my fingers - the edges are razor sharp - I put a towel over my finger and rubbed back and forth making sure every tiny bit of that tape was stuck, especially at the edges. I sealed some leaking windows for a couple of years with that stuff. I used it to cover holes in my FB when I was working on the deck...I've used it all over. Gil used it to hold the glass in his window openings for about three years before having frames made. Rain/water does not compromise it, but it has to go on a dry surface. And overlap the edges for a good seal when taping off an area that is wider than the tape.
 
Ang - interesting. What about using shrink wrap tape. That stuff is tough and lasts all winter with big winds and snow, ice, rain?

I've never used shrink wrap tape - probably because I've never used shrink wrap for anything yet. How well would it stick to your non-skid deck over an open hole with balsa below and still seal out the water, even standing water? That's pretty much how I judge tape these days. :D
 
Dunno about putting it on non-skid. I had it over 2, 6" holes on my bridge for 2 weeks, covering 2 new speaker holes while I waited on speaker rings to be made. We had 65-70 mph winds and 6 inches of rain in 1 day/ storm (500 year storm last week), and a few other typical storms, and not a drop inside. It was tough removing (not a bad thing). It comes in 3 inch wide rolls, so a few overlapping strips might be the trick. George - in your spare time, throw a wad of toilet paper under a piece of shrink wrap tape onto the non-skid and see how it fairs this weekend? if it gets wet - you'll know. We'll get the answer to this... sort of like "how many licks to the center of a tootsie pop" thing.
 
Got the biminis off.

I have been a duct taping (and the stuff Angela references) fool today. Every nook and cranny I can think of. What about the various vents: ER, dryer, fuel etc. haven't done any of those. The wind is forecast from the east and northeast, so we will see which way we are pointed I guess.

The phenomena Pascal mentioned is why I am leaving the EZ2CY on, sacrificial as it may be. It has taken some pretty stiff stuff, but nothing like what is forecast. I am most worried about air borne projectiles. No hurricane shutters like I had in Boca.

I think that no matter what you do, if you are in 100 knot winds and rain, Mother Nature is going to find your weakness. I am just trying to make her hunt real hard.

Pascal, we are in the old Brightmans Marina now called Cozy Cove.

First, there's the hurricane barrier, then Fairhaven Shipyard then Popes Island Marina then the Fairhaven Bridge. We're tucked in an open mouthed cove behind the bridge.

One thing that concerns me about staying in the slip is I don't know how well my neighbors are going to prepare and of most concern is there's a bunch of large boats moving to this side of the bridge hanging off anchors in front of the marina, which seems like a collision waiting to happen.

On the other hand there are a hundred reasons I can think of why being on the hard isn't such a great option....flying debris, a boat slipping off the stands etc etc

What to do what to do.
 
you should be ok north of the bridge... indeed anchored boats are a big concern. we've had the issue here in miami during past storms where semi derelict have dragged in thru the cut and hit boats in their slips.
 
Blue Note is going to be hauled tomorrow afternoon. I have to work an overnight in the ER tonight, or I would have brought her over today. BoatUS pays for half the cost of an emergency haulout for named storms if you are in the five-day cone, which we most certainly are. And I am not feeling either brave or lucky these days. So out she comes. I had a trip out of town planned for Monday, but if I have to bring her back to her slip that day, that's what I will do.

I hope this piece of prudence has the desired effect, not so much to protect my boat, but to make the whole exercise unnecessary. I would be delighted for all of us if that turned out to be the case.
 
Battening down and off the boat we are!!!! I do not like the looks o this me hearty's. Especially the surge part!!!

Mike is there enough vertical clearance in that covered slip there at Piney in case theres a super high tidal surge? I remember seeing those covered slips a few years ago when I was up there buying a 34' from Eric.
 
Hauled PV23 today. Went to move boat to marina and then to travel lift and port battery was dead. It was good on Sunday and we put 100 miles on the boat on a short fishing trip.

As I was moving the boat from the house to the Marina, (Severn River Marina in Gloucester, VA), the boat traffic moving up the river to the marine was as bad as on I-64 after they decided to evacuate Virgina Beach today. Three slow sail boats in front, two trawlers behind, followed by 9 Coast Guard Boats.

This is one time that I am glad that I have spent a number of those $1,000 bills that we joke about flushing down the shower drain each time we use the boat. I was hauled within 30 minutes of arriving.....Nice to be loved.

I just hope the Hat 36C is heavy enough to stay put on those blocks and stands during the blow. I did remove all the canvas and glass from the fly bridge. Wish I had water proof covers for the instrument cable connectors. (I removed all electronics that would be exponsed to the weather with the canvas and glass removed.)

As for the Beatley family, once the other boat is on the trailer tomorrow, all vehicles moved to high ground, and all other items are picked up in the lower level of our house; (We had 2 feet of water flow through during the last big storm. This storm, they are predicting an additional 3 feet. ) .......We are out of here.! Hope we can get back on Sunday.
