Pascal, Those of us on the Chesapeake DO NOT consider ourselves to be Yankees. Well, perhaps except for Mike P. He lives in Mexico but he's really a New Yorker.

hmmm, weather channel guys just said something I have never heard before - "Southern New Englanders are likely to see the worse weather of their lives..."

He sounded serious. Apparently, there is a cold front headed down from Canada that is supposed to meet Irene over NY/CT. They are talking about storm surges piling in Long Island Sound completely flooding NYC airports and coastlines on both shores.

I can't tell if this is just news hype or really going to be a lifetime event.

Yeah, a New Yorker who used to build drag race motors in Memphis...in short, not a New Yorker at all.

I was born and raised in NYC. At this point in life, I feel I have very little in common with most folks up there, no offense to anyone here. I'm a lot more comfortable the further South I go- until I get to Florida....which is full of New Yorkers.....

Latest tracking shows the storm at Hatteras 2pm Saturday, I think. Something like that. It is a Cat 3 storm now from what I can find. If it stays offshore, we up here in MD may not be as affected as we were by Isabel. But I have haulout arrangements made if I need them.

Passages, as far as news hype versus real events, I can't tell the difference either- because IMHO they can't, either.

Battening down and off the boat we are!!!! I do not like the looks o this me hearty's. Especially the surge part!!!

Pascal, as of this moment, they are looking at Manhatten for a landfall point. Is that far enough from Nantucket to stay put there? If not, where to the west would you run? Where is there really to go? Would you haul out somewhere?

Gee, can't wait to get that insurance premium next year if we have to pay to rebuild New York.

No landfall in NYC yet but halfway up LI... (as of the 11pm)

If true (big if 3 1/2 days off) that's about 130nm from nantucket which is fine. We ll see how the track evolves by Friday... You can't be really sure til 48 hours

Amen.
Those with knowledge know that they don't.

However based upon experience with Camille, Katina and a few lesser storms, can say with some authority, Surge Sucks.

I think they full well know the difference and that's the disgusting part of what passes for the "news media."

I lived in NY prior to Mexico/Piney Narrows but overall have spent more of my life in the south than the north. I don't consider myself a New Yorker at all though we enjoyed LI Sound and NYC. I usually tell folks the best place I ever lived was Anchorage, AK. I spent 8 years there and that was a perfect place at the time for me - in my mid-30's/early 40's; but I wouldn't care to move there now.

My biggest concern is my business. I moved my shop to Rt 1 in Westbrook CT, I need to find a topo map of the area to see how much surge I can tolerate. Gonna suck if I need to move everything to higher ground.

I had 3 ft of water in my office from Isabel. It screwed up lots of stuff. When you move electronic equipment to higher levels, remember to pick up the power supply off the floor.

In my limited experience, its better to be on the west side of a passing storm.

The 8am looks like it moved the track back to the west. How y'all making out up in NC with your preps?

This one is very different from Isabel which passes west of the Chesie packing water up the bay due to CC circulation

It looks Irene will stay to the east which if anything may blow water out of the bay although the NE flow may cause some flooding on the west shore

Sweating bullets literally and figuratively here in NC. In hindsight I wish I was hauling out today or yesterday. My reason for going out last was to have the boat out of the water a minimum amount of time; now I wish I was going to be further up the hill. We are taking all of our most prized belongings off the boat.

Question for you veterans, should I go through the extra effort of completely removing the biminis, or is it ok to fold them and wrap them up? The way mine are designed, it is a project to pull the Stamoid off the bows and I am running out of time. Also, should I try to remove the flying bridge's helm chairs? They are the short-back style. I removed the cushions. Duct taping various hatches and crevices.

It is eerily calm here this morning.

Do all you can and realise you cant do or think of everything. If you think you need to take it off you probably do. Anything that can come undone and flap will. Good luck to you George and the rest of the guys up the coast Your in our prayers.

George,

It would be wise to remove the bimini and stow inside if practical. If something gets loose and flaps, it will get worse and probably self-destruct. Never removed or had a problem with chairs that were bolted down.

Regarding running out of time. Take a few minutes and budget and prioritize your prep time. Do the most important things first. Consider what can be replaced and what cannot. The large boats in our neighborhood which were moored in a bayou during Katrina were beaten and battered, but none sunk. All the houses there were demolished.

Good luck

Leave the helm chairs but I d remove the Bimini. Can you remove the bows off the brackets? A lot easier than trying to pull the fabric off the bows

Good luck!

Plug your fuel tank and engine room vents I had water coming in every small opening during Frances and Jeanne. I had stuffed foam in my fuel tank vents because I've heard people saying the water got up in their tanks.
