Randy, been gone for a few days. If you buy that 70 let me know and I'll fly in to help you get her around. Would love to take at least a couple of weeks to do something like that. Got to get my plant moved first but after that count me in for a couple weeks if you need help.

Hey Skipper,

You'd be the perfect match for "Gilligan" Guzman. All we need now is Mary Ann (mine) and Ginger to round things out. We could use a big money guy like Thurston Howell III to finance this voyage, and some "Professor" mechanic for just in case stuff. Any DD mechanics or deep pocket volunteers out there?

I'll keep you posted on how things progress. You can bring the 'cue.

According to Babelfish, the above translates to:

If you can calculate towards outside what the hell that you go to reguards of doin that buys a boat, It can be that it goes and he is the navigator. You need to me to go because you know that I will find girls. You can be that even she is able to Michael to go with you so he you can clean the covers

What the? ...

Maybe we need to go back to basic Hatt stuff, this is all too complicated for me.

You got me rolling around on the floor Mike I translated close to the same thing but didn't bother asking old Pat what the ^%$#@ are you saying hombre

Hey, give the boy a break, he's a closet Mexican with a Cuban accent!

PS He used Google to translate whatever it was he was trying to say! ;)

Well, the decision on whether or not to drive a boat to FL from CA may have gotten a little easier. I checked with Dockwiser and got quoted $69K to move from Encinata (sp?) to Port Everglades. I'll keep checking, but I can't believe they would be that much higher than their competition.

But not to worry, they offer a 20% discount with 5 months notice! Let's see, that would save about $13,800, and 5 months dock space would cost what, $5,000 at least in Newport Beach. Still nets out at over $60K not counting the fuel it would take to get to/from the POE's. Thanks, but no thanks.

Seems to me I could major both engines and gennys and still have enough left over to buy the fuel for the trip home for that kind of money.

CRAZYBIRD If you got the time then do the crime. Its a one in a life time trip, I'd break it in to four legs. CA. to Los Suenos then to Panama third back to Cost Rica but east side then fourth to the Keys and up the coast. I'd be game for any leg you want :D crew of three minimum and alot of forum guys are showing interest.

Gooz Boy, sounds like a plan to me. I could use a navigator/interpreter for the down south part. I figure once you get through the canal, things would be a lot easier.

That tub will sleep a bunch of folks, the more the merrier. But beware, I'm liable to pass around the collection plate at the end of it all. :o

Just so you dont pass somethin' else after all them chimichangas and BLATZ

I'm surprised at that price for shipping - I was quoted 35000 to ship our 53 from FL to LaPaz and that was about 10% higher than last year. Of course your boat is much bigger so I guess that's the difference. Does sound high though. I was talking to a guy here a couple of weeks ago who was up here buying a Hinkley. He has a 60 Hatt sportfisher (and the Tshirt with his boat on it) and he also said he goes from the US through the canal to Central America quite a bit. He also said that he plans to ship it from now on because it's easier. He CLAIMED that he could have his boat shipped for 16K.

He seemed like an honest guy so I'm wondering if his "16K" was maybe from some years ago when he first checked. He did seem VERY knowledgeable about running the boat on that trip and claimed to have done it 6 times in the past 10 years. He was in a hurry and had to fly home after buying the boat - no survey, just a quick sea trial, handed the Hinkley owner a check for 300K and left - so I didn't get the chance to talk more to him and find out more about who he had talked to about shipping.

I really liked him in our 15 minute meeting - especially the part where he wrote a check for 300K, told the broker to arrange to have the boat shipped down and let him know how much to write the check for, got a limo to the airport and was gone!

A few thoughts-
It seems that some have found shipping at considerably lower cost than Dockwise (like half). Were these trips on freighters? It would be nice to be able to ship a boat from say Tx to the west coast. With dockwise, everything starts in Ft Laud. I havn't been able to find out anything with google.

Randy, this deal where a guy ships a boat from Ca to Fl to sell it seems ass-backwards. It would appear that a given 58' Hatt is worth 75k-100k more in Ca and 100k-150k more in Seattle when compared to Fl. If I could find that 53' MY (the one that is selling for 210k) in Seattle, I would need my mini-14 to blow away all the competition. Might even have to pack a spare barrel.

Ever watch the Deadliest Catch? All the big steel in Ak comes out of La. The west coast just can't compete with labor costs there or in the Carolinas or anywhere in the south for that matter. Seattle gets to provide the nets, pots and specialized crab hydralics, but no one is paying 2 million more to own a Marco 120' hull. Marco is a famed high -quality yard in Seattle that now depends on it's gear patents.

Well this guy I purchased my boat from is a dealer but he also works in the Sea Turtle Foundation so I don't know why he shipped it to Lauderdale but I remember he said something about it would sell better  maybe not true , maybe he got a super deal? maybe he's here and had a buyer but It seems easy ( conflict of intrest ) to buy boats in your name when someone may call up looking to donate and you personaly pick up the deal??? :(anyone know about donations and foundations.?

a few months ago, a couple posted their shipping story on the trawler list. they cruise a dutch built boat in europe and then shipped across the pond... $12k vs $35k with dockside... plus $50 a day per person to travel on the same ship. boat was lifted from the water to the cradle and back va the ship's crane.

http://www.irbs.com/lists/trawlerworld/0512/0397.html

there is a link to their picture page.

I've often seen boats being loaded on top of ships here at the port of Miami, so it seems that is't something shipping company do pretty often...

Hey Mike,

In order, I was surprised at the $69k quote too! I'll definitely keep checking around before making an offer, but looks like driving it home is still going to be the cheapest albeit most questionable route. With all the volunteers I seem to be attracting, how can I resist? (Hey, just went for the wink button, what happened?) Oh well, WINK!

Second point, I haven't met the guy, but I like him already. Reckon he'd care the join the cast of Gilligan's Island for a "3 hour" tour? :D

Dang Bubba,

You've given me something else to think about. Maybe I'll take FREEBIRD to CA to pick up that 70 and park her in that hole I'll be making in Newport Beach with a big ole' FSBO sign! But if I can pull another $50k in Seattle, I'll go see if I can find Frazier Crane. I can sell my boat and get my head examined all at the same time!
