Seeing as how you've been there, done that, what's the situation on transient dock space between point A and point B?

Is it conceivable to think I can make this journey without running all night at times or trying to anchor in deep water?

Don't imagine there's a whole lot of ICW to be had on the CA to FL run. Is there a lot of offshore stuff, or can you follow the coastline without adding significant mileage?

Answer these questions correctly and you may win a no-expense paid trip from Newport Beach to Palmetto! I'll pack on some Miller Lite for ya though. :cool:
 
Yep, can't beat a Mini-14 or something like that for comfortable distance work and a Mossberg Mariner if they sneak onto the boat. The "Shuck-Shuck" sound of a pump shotgun cycling a round into the chamber is usually enough to send 'em diving overboard. If they don't dive...well that's why they sell double 00 buck in 3-inch magnum loads.
 
Yep, the sound of the slide on my Ithaca Deerslayer 12ga has the same effect as yelling "Border Patrol" in Texas. I pack a scoped AR-15 for long distance conversations, and a couple of handguns for up close and personal.

Sure would hate to have to spray a round of 00 inside the boat though. It'd make one hell of a mess! :eek:
 
There are marina's with dock space but it can be a long distance between A and B. I believe Mexico's coast is the tough part north and south of Cabo there is a long run without stopping. There WILL be running at night offshore. Pretty much all of the cruise will be offshore stuff, but the coastline is visible for much of the way.

I'm off to help a buddy run his classic 1939 50' Burger over to Blioxi, MS today. They finally got a dock re-built over there so he and a couple of other classic boats are headed over for the weekend to check it out.

old TK#3 has a big old Defoe boat in Pgoula' name SARAMAR-- do a google on Defoe and link to the tub. Its now a restaurant awaiting work at some yard next to Ingalls-- ws

I have an acqaintance who shipped a 70 cpmy from the PacNW to FL and it was 25,000.00 , this was about 3 years ago though. You can expect to alot of 9- 10 kt overnights doing that trip . My boat came from San Fran area. There are big stretches of water with no cover. I would not do it without stabilizers and some significant usage on the Left Coast first, to shake down all the systems . Also make sure you have plenty of spares for everything that will break.......Pat

Thanks for the info. $25k sounds much more in line with quotes I was getting before I bought my 58TC a couple of months ago. This boat is located in Newport Beach, and it is stabilized. It appears to have good updated electronics, so I feel pretty comfortable about that part.

I'd run it around the "Left Coast" a good bit before doing anything. I'm adventurous, but not stupid. It's awful hard to carry a spare 12V71TI, and I don't speak Spanish! ;)
 
If you run at displacement speeds mostly and the engines are in decent shape to start with, plus you have enough oil and filters on board to keep the change cycle current I think you'd be pretty good there.

The wild card is the "something happens" problems. Running aground, hitting a container, the sort of things you can't anticipate but DO occur offshore. Having that happen on the "backside" (left coast side) would really suck. I'd be slightly (but only slightly!) less concerned if it happened on the right side, simply because there's more there - up the east side you've got decent enclaves of civilization.

In any event there is no problem FedEX can't solve in terms of parts, but you will NOT like the cost. The bigger issue comes in if for some reason you need to come out in a hurry - that's simply not happening in a lot of remote areas.
 
Randy I called the guy that sold me my boat it came from CA. He paid 30k last year and he shiped it to Lauderdale to sell because they sell better there?.
I also have 12v71 and burn 16-18gph at 10nts 1200 rpm you do the math whats the trip 3000-4000 thousand miles? I'll help you , I can probubly get out of town for 1 week at a time and fly to where your at. Or I'll go help you get her ready :D

If I embark on a CA to FL trip, coming out in a hurry won't be a concern. If something major breaks, I'll just hail a cab or a donkey and head for the nearest airport. Hello, State Farm?, my boat was hijacked and I didn't see which way they went! Moochose grashiass amigo! :D

Consider yourself hired. I haven't had the chance to calculate the mileage. Let's see, $30k will buy about 11,000 gallons of fuel, burning at 18gph is 611 hours x 12 mph is 7332 miles. Sounds like it'll be cheaper to bring it home! I'll buy the beer and tacos! :D
 
And I speaka da Spanish so when the Guarda Costa's pull us over I tell them you a crazy Gringo with alot of safes around :D

As far as cockpit vs. my; having a cockpit is like having your first boat with a generator, you'll never go back to a boat without one. It is great for access to the water and ease of line handling and great place to sit outside when the wind is howling. Also cockpit controls are super sweet to have .....Pat
 
Randy you come down next semana and stay on my bote casa and we speeka spanish all semana ,and mi help you abla con la senoritas. and help you aprende some mechanico on mi bote. maybe we get sucio with grasa from los motores 12v71's. and have mucho servesa's , oh and traga to amigos Bill y Pat para tener un tiempo bueno :D

Pat,

I've had sedan bridges before, and I appreciate the merits of having a cockpit. In a MY you sacrafice cabin space for one, but at 50' plus, who cares? Never had cockpit controls, but they have to be handy for backing into a slip, or picking up your hat that blew off.
