  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' DOUBLE CABIN (1962 - 1965)
What's the best way to go about parting out a boat?

Again, asking for a friend. Lots of very good stuff on the boat, but then there's the question of what to do with the hull after everything is gone. Boat is in a marina south of Morehead City, NC.

Anybody have any ideas?

I found the best money making way was to disassemble the boat yourself, categorize each part with part number and photos. Store each part in an easy to get to storage location. Then post each photo and price on Craigslist, EBay, Hatteras forum, and any other boat sites. Your friend can make more money that way. The easier way is to post on the same sites and invite buyers to the boat and let them remove what they want. Sorry for your friend.

That's going to be the trick with engines, transmissions, generator etc. as most can't just show up and take those out and carry them home. That still leaves the hull. I would imagine disposing of a 48YF hull could be pretty pricey.

Seriously , a chainsaw will make short work of the hull. I have watched the same individual chop up sevetal 35 + ft boats . Takes him about a week. The key is having a big dumpster available.

Wholesale value of the engine espresso and Venn is $10 to 15k. Depends on transmissions and accessories.

Find a way to dispose of 25k lbs of debris and figure it's cost. Then add in labor. Before you transport and store the good stuff your underwater.

I think Scott is correct. Randy I believe this is the boat that was worked on by Starman some years ago and it does have lots of good "stuff" on it. How hard did the present owners try to find a suitable buyer for it besides your previous thread recently. The right person is out there somewhere that has the skill, time and desire to finish this boat. It sounds like one of the better "project" boats out there since so much has already been done, much of which is not visible like deck core repair by Starman. The list you posted originally IMO covered most of the big dollar costs already. Just needs an introduction to the right person and you will have done your good deed and saved another old Hatteras and probably made lots of people happy.

Walt, the only "marketing" that's been done is what I posted here and a Craigslist ad where I believe she was listed for $50K. That's not going to happen. I just wondered if there were any salvage operations in that area who would buy the boat. It's certainly fixable, but it would require a lot of work. I'm not sure how much it would take to get everything hooked up to run the engines.

There's a guy on the Boats wanted forum looking for a project. I'd start there. Otherwise - there is almost no market for a project boat. Cost of refit is higher than ever. Value of nice boats is lower than ever. Average buyer is 70 years old. Buyers want to buy and go boating not go re-building. Post lots of photos of the real condition and a low price. Here, Craigslist, anywhere you can. Then pray for an angel.

had a demolition job as part of a project last year. hauled off 15k tons. Recycled 11k tons. If salvage/demo is really the question....

Would suggest, since it is on land, to get estimate for demolition and haul off separately from salvage value.
Then get a salvage group to bid on stripping anything they can resell.

Fuel, fluids and batts need to be removed with a letter from an environmental firm for the demo group. that will lower cost from the contractor and landfill.

Hope that helps. Bad situation. Restoration unfinished has little market value on our old girls.

The way he will net the most money (also read as lose the least amount of money), is to give it away for $5,000 (if lucky) or, free (not so lucky).

There are older hatts in good turn-key usable condition selling for 15-25k. Put it all in perspective. Getting rid of it for no cost, is actually profiting.

Guys, with all due respect...this doesn't seem like a run of the mill project boat since it has so much new stuff that a regular project owner would still have to buy. Without having seen it or even current pictures, obviously I'm speculating a bit but I still think that based on available information including Starman's posts as to what has been done this is not your average project. Randy, please consider Eric's advice and try to market it but with the understanding that it will have to go for very little. If it ran it would also be more attractive to someone some distance away.

Walt

I spoke with the owner, he claims to have spent a lot of money on the project. He also claims with little effort it could be running and moved under its own power. Unfortunately as Krush stated you can get a boat ready to use for short money. Making this a very difficult sell.

Thanks for the input, guys. Hopefully I'll be able to come up with some better pics than I've gotten to this point as it would be counterproductive to use those. No doubt it's going to be a tough sale, but good news is, barring that Craigslist offering, they're not blind to the fact that there is very little market for this boat and understand the value.

She was going to be a grand old gal for sure. No doubt I can relate, but downturns in business, divorce, and boat restorations just don't mix. I sold my 58TC for $20K just to stop the bleeding, and I know Chris has more money in this boat than I had in mine. It's hard to have your dream turn into a nightmare.

Bummer that it went that way. I remember he and Starman were really doing that thing from soup to nuts and put some top of the line upgrades in it. Hopefully it can find a friend. Hope things get better for Chris too. Tough road I'm sure.

Having seen the pictures, knowing the work Starman put in the boat, Knowing my limitations and giving alot of consideration I am out. Having said that the main reason is I am 6 1/2 hours from the boat an to move her would require further disassembly (and alot of money). Add to that I am still working full time and it turns into 5 years down the road to complete.

My opinion is the boat is worth repairing. You would be slightly above top retail when complete depending on how good your skills are but would have the Queen of that model! What the boat needs is cleaning up and new pictures taken. I would hate to see her parted out.

I did this same project with a Hat 17 years ago. Got her out of a field 50 miles from any water, took two years to bring her back, enjoyed her for two years and she still graces the HOF with her beauty.

The person that can do this is out there.

APPLETON OUT:cool:

If you post some pics here, I think you'll get a better idea of what to do. The people on this forum will give good advice if they really know what she's dealing with. So far, its all speculation as no one has seen it in its current state. I know there are some really good components there. It just depends on what was done, what's left to be completed, and how much it has deteriorated since it was last worked on.

Sky, all your points are valid. I haven't seen the boat in almost ten years which is when most of the work was being done. The new windows and frames were obviously not right as they leaked and messed up the interior. Maybe things just stopped before they were properly sealed. Deterioration over a ten year period is an obvious concern, even with new components. I'll post these pics as an idea of the exterior condition, but the other interior pics? I'm not sure what the guy was trying to capture.

How can you come to that conclusion with no more info than I've provided?
