I also spoke to Chris. For me it's impossible to turn around at a profit. Many things go south when left sitting.

I'm in the middle of a 52c galley refit and window replacement. It still needs some hoses and electrical things. It's a huge amount of work. the cost of the afromosa plywood is insane. Teak for trim no better.

The interior work outside of softgoods will be 5 figures. Fiberglass replacements for the windows and paint for that area is e nother 5 figure pile of cash.

Unless someone takes that on as a labor of love there's no commercial value. I tried to sell the engines and generator but again it's a cost vs benefit issue.

Who said anything about flipping it for a profit?

My only point is that it's impossible to come to such a conclusion without seeing the boat or at least more detailed photos. As for conversations with Chris, he estimated $40K to finish it. Then again, by the same token, I'm not sure how long it's been since he's seen the boat.

.99 no reserve eBay.
The brutal honesty is that this was not one of Hatts better looking designs and they have always come up short in the resale market. I remember one pulled in next to me in the late 70's that the guy paid like $60k for a mint '74
Wasn't it a 44TC that they cobbled a cockpit on?

It was like numerous other Hatt motor yachts with a cockpit extension. I too suggested an eBay auction, but I'm sure the .99 reserve comment was sarcasm.

I personally think the 48YF is a great boat, but there have been some seemingly nice examples well south of $100K. There weren't that many built.

I've sold a lot of stuff on eBay and the .99 works as attractor. It gets the fever going. I've seen things where a guy had a buy it now that never got a bid then re listed with no reserve and got more than his buy it now price. Just takes guts

I would think a $5,000 reserve would do the same thing without that big a risk.

It would be a shame to chop that boat up. Put a real price on it, get some updated pictures and let it go. Someone will buy it. Same thing happened to an Ocean Alexander by me.

It won't it's the auction mentality. Better to start at .99 with a 5k hidden reserve. The worst thing you can do is put a buy it now price in with an auction format. It fixes the price in people's minds and they won't bid it up anywhere near the BIN price.

I've got a friend that cuts up these old boats. Any fairly flat piece of glass he cuts square or rectangular and sells. 2x2 4x4 whatever people will buy for projects. I mean what would you pay for a 4x8 1" thick fiberglass panel

Woukd have never suggested a BIN price, but a $5,000 reserve would certainly let buyers know the seller is serious about selling... cheap.

One problem with this boat is that it will cost as much to redo as a 53 or even better a 58 YF...

By the time you redo the engines and trannys (or install remans), generator, air conditioning, new electrical panel and wiring, you re going to be around $125. Then you can add $75k of carpentry, plumbing, soft goods etc for an even $200k...

Obviously this is not about resale value as you will get only 50c on the dollars for ever dollars spent.

But in the end you end up with a lot of boat for the money with new systems and fully updated.

Didn't he already do an engine swap? I thought these were rebuilt 8v92's.

You're going to have to list what has actually been done so far and what other parts come with the boat. That will help sell it.

The boat is worth zero or negative to all but a very few dreamers (and not the Obama "dreamers"). If he doesn't take whatever is offered (including free) he will be PAYING for it to be removed/disposed.

With that said, if it gets parted out, I'll pay and come take some things off (rub rail, any useful interior wood, maybe the flybridge, some electrical stuff, pulpit).

If I remember right it does have rebuilt 8/92s.

It sat for years so there is a good chance the engines need work.

Yes but they should not need to be opened up maybe injector work but the internals should be good. I don't think it matters much unless he drops the price from when I talked with him it will never sell. He was asking 40k when we spoke.

Not disputing your claim, but he's never mentioned that figure to me. As I stated earlier, there is no doubt $20K would buy the boat. As I also said, all offers will be considered.

What size are the wheels?

I don't have a clue. No doubt things like that are easily removed. I sold him that polished anchor, which makes me wonder if my mermaid table is still on the boat. :)
