  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' TRIPLE CABIN (1970 - 1976)
I have been talking with captan eric on this forum about a bigger boat than what I was thinking about before. He has told me about a 70 foot which sounds nice but he says people are getting rid of those and buying bigger ones like 75 or 80 feet. May be they are to small. I was able to see a 53 foot and it was to small but now I really want to have a boat with my son saying he wants to have one. My living room in my house was more than 17 feet so maybe the 70 foot boat wont be big enough either. He is helping other people find boats and will help me to find one I like. He will teach me to drive it but my son will do that more than me and I will just live on it in the winter right now. Does anybody have a 75 or 80 foot boat who can tell me how they like theirs to live on.

My father has a 75 and it is the perfect boat for living on. It has a hugh master with his and her heads not to mention that she is fast for her size. Nice size aft deck and large bridge. Good Luck!!!

Sparky,

go into www.yachtworld.com and start looking. 70+ foot sounds like a lot of serious research. And start visiting and going aboard lots of boats. Remember, the more you look the more you learn and hence, refine your needs.

You will also gain an invaluable education as to what to look for on particular size and vintage boats. And most important, what to avoid.

Happy hunting.

I pushed the link you gave and saw a 78 foot Hatteras euro motor yacht for 499 thousand which looks nice. It is in Md where my son lives. I have been looking at boats which are much more than that and it might be to old but I could still keep my beach house. I will call him to see what he thinks do you think this is a good model to look at or should I keep looking a newer boats? What does euro mean. Is this a foreign boat?

Unless you want to have a paid crew you can stop looking at 70'. Anything larger will need at least 1 full time person unless you like to work a lot. Really, 50' is pushing it.....

"Euro" used to imply that the after half of the gunnel was covered by the extended hard top from the long salon. On a 78' Hatteras I'm not sure.

While I can profess some familiarity with Hattys up to 60' beyond that you're out of my league. Again, the more you investigate, look, explore, the more you will formulate...yada, yada.

And don't forget to plan on getting a hull and mechanical survey from certified marine surveyors. Guaranteed to save you money on the initial purchase.

Regardz,

Just found it. 400 hrs. since major overhaul doesen't seem bad. it does fit the description of "Euro" (covered gunnel walk).

The age - 1974 - normally would not mean much if she's had good care over the years.

If I recall correctly MikeP is due in soon at Piney Narrows Marina - the boat's home port. Might want to send him a PM to have a looksy.

"Shiloh" , I'm almost certain I've seen it more than once.

Thank you all for answers about this boat. I saw someone say things about two strokes being bad but others said it was okay but I really don't want something i cant get fixed if it breaks so new boats may be better. Is this boat two strokes? My son knows the numbers on motors but not me but I remember captian eric saying newer boats go faster. He has been helping me to find things to look at but he lives in northCarolina and I may need help here or some other place but there. I have to go to bed now but will check back. Thank you all again and good nite.

My undestanding is that Hatteras produced a Motoryacht design for the European market and called it the "Euro". They looked at the design features commonly seen in the Med and made some changes to fit that market. Those changes were then made standard to the US market. The major difference was the addition of the "sportdeck" with a stairway down to an open swim platform. Optional larger engines gave the speeds that the Europeans were used too as well.

Once this design became popular in the US there were many companies that extended motoryachts to create that look. Some extensions look great and some not so great. The other issue is the change in performance.

"Shiloh" is powered by a pair of GM 12-71ti 2 stroke diesels. They have had major overhauls. Documentation of this work is available. The 12's run very smoothly with all those cylinders, and with "Shiloh's" big mufflers, from the dock they sound like turbines! The "Euro" (reverse shear) transom extension was added by her current owner. The added 8' in waterline length improved her performance and cruise speed by several knots. The boat had a complete paint job at the time of the transon extension. "Shiloh's" owner is a long time yacht owner who knows how to properly handle a boat this size. "Shiloh" is not his first large Hatt! She has been well maintained over his ownership. That said: She is still a 30+ year old boat and an amazing value for the very reasonable asking price of $499K. She is well worth a serious look see.

How can so many people know about this boat? Is it a good thing or bad. I am still waiting to hear from my son but he is a lawyer and very busy. I wish he had done something else I hate lawyers ha ha. I'm sorry to keep asking questions but I still am worried about two strokes so maybe I should be looking at something newer. How can I tell the numbers on motors to know if they are two strokes or not. May be I need to find somebody to help me I hate to keep bothering captn eric with so many dumb questions but I really do want a big boat. Thank you all.

I remember this boat being lengthened at the yard in Eastport, Annapolis, when it was done years ago. They did a good job. I think Euro refers to the restyled aft end of the boat. "Shiloh" is a really nice item, as a first boat it will keep you busy to say the least.

Jim Rosenthal knows about this boat because he lives in Annapolis and she was rather prominent on the landscape there on the downtown waterfront during the transom extension.

I know all about her because the company that I own is representing her for sale. No, this is not a commercial posting; Just answering questions about a boat being discussed here by others! :) This time I actually know some of the answers.

Capt eric is helping me with boats but my son lives in Baltimore so can he call and talke to you or can I call and talk to you. Are there more bigger boats for sale at your company? I have been talking to people who say I need something newer than that one but may be it would be okay if it is really nice inside and motors are good.

I'm pleased to report that this afternoon the seller has signed and accepted a written offer on "Shiloh". The deal is subject to the normal survey/seatrial. The buyer is a previous Hatteras Yacht owner, so he is experienced and knows what he's getting himself into with this size yacht. Stay tuned for details, but I'd say we've found a good match. I do appreciate everyone's interest in this boat.

SeaEric, make sure that Sparky understands what is involved with owning a very large boat, e.g. multiple systems, more things to maintain. I would suggest that for the first time yacht owner that something in the 50 foot range may be more practical, for the do it yourselfer. Unless he has a lot of free time or a large checkbook or both, he would be better off with a something like Freebirds 58 which is a good boat that with a little TLC could be great boat. How many staterooms does he need? I know that landlubbers think that they need a lot of room. I have found that humans can live in much smaller spaces than we are accustomed to, for instance, I have a 36 foot travel trailer, it seemed small when I first got it but now seems very spacious. My 48 YF seems large in camparison to the travel trailer. If Freebirds boat is too small Carl has his 67 Hat on the market, and it is a nice boat. If I had the free time to use it. Carl would be boatless. LOL :D

I just read the 78 foot boat is sold. May be I should look at freebirds boat he sent me a message before and talked about boats. I saw a 53 and it is to small I think but may look at his 58 I live in Sarasota now. I still am afriad of two stroke motors though and may be that is why his motor has problems and cant find anybody to fix it. I can spend more money but may be I should not until I look at more boats and I can always get a bigger one if I decide I need more space. Capt eric told me about another boat that is about 80 feet I think but I dont want to sell my beach house or other things and dont believe in borrowing money for things like boats which lose money no matter what.

Sparky,

It sounds as if you have the resources to buy any kind of boat that you want. I suggest you talk to SeaEric, tell him what you "need" on the boat you want, and let him do the legwork as your broker. If you tell him you don't want two stroke engines for example, then he would adjust his sights accordingly. This seems to me to be the best way to approach it and would make it a lot easier for you - having someone with a lot of experience in your corner separating the wheat from the chaff.

Chris I have a motor home but dont use it much and it is for sale since I have moved to Fla. I thouhgt my wife and I would use it more but she died and now I dont go anyplace but to my beach house sometimes when my kids and grandkids want to go. Every one tells me I should let my son take it back north because there arre to many of them down here and mine is to much money to sell fast. I would have been happy with a Winebago but my wife thought they were to small and wanted a prevost. It always made me nervous to drive it but she liked to drive and was younger than me so it was okay when she was here. Now she is gone but not her cat which she loved. Does any body need a nice motor home or a cat ha ha. May be I can find some body to trade with on a boat.

MikeP I have never owned a big boat but have friends back home who have them and sometimes bring them to Fla or other places warm in winter. I know some things but not many they all had people who drove them for a fee which is what I will do myself if I get something to big for just me to drive. I have been talking to capt Eric who I met on here but he lives in North Carolina but moves boats and says he can help me some but I had hoped my son could look at that 78 foot boat which is sold. May be there will be another one up there or I can find one here. May be I can have my son call Sea Eric to see about boats in that area. Then I can find some one else named Eric to help me here ha ha. There are a lot of erics on here may be one is in Fla.
