Sparky, I can be your "Eric" in Florida too. I am licensed in Florida and have an office there in Ft Lauderdale. I'd be happy to help in any way that I can. Send me a PM or e-mail with your contact info. One thing is for sure, there are plenty of good buys out there in large motor yachts.

I was joking about more erics in Fla ha ha. I sent you a message thank you.

Sparky,
What year is the Prevost? My dad has one and it has a 2-stroke Detroit 8v92 in it. Yours may have as well. You say you don't like them, but there are really no major problems with them.

That engine in Freebirds boat is not a problem to repair either. There is worldwide service for these engines. Anyone who tells you differently is just feeding you a line. Most of the problems are related to poor maintenance and neglect.

There is worldwide service for these engines.

Amen to that. About two months ago we were driving from Mexico City to Puebla, about 90 miles away. We were going through some tiny little town. I wish I had had my camera out because as we flashed by this little repair shop, there was a big Detroit Diesel logo and underneath it was written "53, 71 y 92"

No mention of the latest Cummins or Cats! (or even old ones)

I think when the biodiesel gets into full swing, these old Detroits will really shine, since none of the modern diesels will have a distinct advantage any longer if we have a cleaner burning fuel. If that happens then the new techno marvels/techno nightmares will have a hard time comparing themselves in the reliability category. My Ford diesel truck has been in the shop 3 times in 10,000 miles for computer detected problems. Mean time between failures is about 50 hours. This is pretty good compared to Catepillar engines.

Sparky I have no problems with Detroits and most of the older boats have them. If you are looking at something newer then you may have to get used to Catepillars which are 4 stroke engines. Just get your checkbook out when the "technician" with his laptop computer shows up to fix them. I still prefer to have "mechanics" work on my boat.

...and this is why, when I bought new engines for Blue Note, I got those old-fashioned mechanically injected models. I'd rather have a mechanic, too.. :D

Sparky remember that this site is for mostly classic Hatteras vessels. They hold up better over the years and are usually well maintained.

You sound like a gentleman looking for a vessel he can enjoy and spend time on without doing alot of work yourself. If this is true get associated with a good mechanic and ships carpenter to keep everything ship shape.

From your post earlier where is now only you after the passing of your wife might I suggest a captained vessel where you need only enjoy the yacht and have someone else maintain it. This would allow you the time to spend with the family and would make it easier to travel.

Just a little thought. I know many on the site are Hatteras snobs but do consider other QUALITY vessels too. Just stay away from the poorly constructed ones.

I have had 671s and 12v71s(2 strokes) and have zero problems finding parts or service. As the matter of fact Florida Detroit Diesel Allison(FDDA) in both Orlando and Tampa have been great. Get you a good set of the natruals(no turbos) and they will be running for your great grandkids.....

Thank you all for helping me with these dumb questions I am sure. Sky cheney my motorhome is a 2000 vantare with a detroit 60 series but I don't know if it is a two stroke. I read on here about two stroke problems and was worried about having one. I've already had a stroke and wouldn't want another ha ha. I dont use it anymore and bought it when I retired a couple of years before my stroke and has 50 thousand miles. I will hire a person to drive my boat wehn I want to ride but my son can drive it when he is around either here or there. I talked to Seaeric and he said he can help me but my son will do the most of looking at things like that but I will go to.

The Detroit series 60 is a four-stroke engine. Since it is a Detoit Diesel it shares the same service network that the older engines do. The mechanics get continual training on all of the MTU-Detroit Diesel products.

A boat is similar to a motorhome in that most people do not put many miles or hours on them. Compare that Prevost to it's commercial bus equivalent that will run continuously day after day. All of these engines have fewer problems if they are run on a regular basis. One of the worst things for them is to let them sit idle for months at a time.

Ha Ha Ha!!! That’s priceless. I can’t stand it. Let me up!!! Your killing me!!!

Don’t worry about having another stroke if you get 2 stroke engines. Having 2 stokes isn’t a bad thing…

I never let the engine idel very long on my motorhome and it has a generator to make eveything work like air conditioning when you are not in a camp ground or park with electricity. My wife and I had fun with it even though she died before we used it like we wanted to. Mine has the places in the sides where it slides out to give more room in the bedroom and and living room but you can only do that when it is parked. Do you think your dad would know any body who would want to buy my motor home? I did not think my motor was a two stroke but was not sure until you told me. I dont know about numbers on motors to tell but it never has broken or anything I thought it just might be on boats.

This is true, I swear. We have a guy in our marina who has had 4 strokes and they call him "4 Stroke" :D

I knew a guy we called 4 stroke but lets not go there. Especially after his wife told us the reason for his name.

Well at least his name wasn't two stroke then.

Thank you again every body for helping me with my questions and to sea eric who sent me a message I sent to my son. May be you can help me find the boat I want to live on and will be big enough for visits. captan eric is still helping me and now eric in Fla is to. I am glad my joke about my stroke was funny and may be I need a doctor named eric to I am afraid of what you think of my one stroke now ha ha. My son is coming down next week so I will be gone but will keep you up on what we find later.

There was a guy on our dock some years back who had lot's of playmates. They called him multi....er.....

....hell, I better not.

Sparky have you gone to see any boats yet? There are a few owners here that may be able to comment on these larger boats.

I am back at home now and still am looking at boats. Is Berger a good boat my son asked about those? Do they have a web site like this one to ask questions and have people help me with questions about boats? I almost got to meet free bird Randy but was not at home when he was near here last week like he said in a e mail. He said he will help me find a boat with my two erics ha ha and says he will make me a good deal on his 58 foot but it is to small I think.
