If Money Was No Object!

I have had the great fortune to have 3 different friends that each have gone from borrowing car payments from me to time and money not being an object any more in a short period of time. Fortunately they all love boats. Here is what they did:

1. Restaurant guy quickly moved from big Sea Rays up through Hatterases from 43 to 53 to 58 and then they went public. Since then, he has been in and out of 100 plus foot custom built yachts fully crewed and circling the globe. He never really liked driving a boat and now never does. He does love beautiful women and this is the right toy for a 5-9 240lbs. guy in his 50's. If the boat isn't somewhere he can find and attract a super model then he keeps some lovely crew from the Ukraine on board at all times. He also keeps a 60 Sea Ray here in Tampa to do short bay cruises with when in town.

2. Plastics guy is married with 4 kids and uses his 12 boats to entertain them. He has a 55 Lyman Morse sailboat that he just sailed to Ireland. He keeps a 43 Fountain with 3 Yamahas in Tampa for racing around at 70mph and fishing. He also is building a 65 Marlow for Motor Yacht for a planned long range cruise. Finally, he has about 5 different Whalers that he uses as tenders everywhere and a racing sailboat that never goes out.

3. Real estate guy is married but fancies himself to be more like Restaurant guy. He just got his money in the last year or so. He buys bay boats and flats boats (Gauss, Scout, Everglades, Pathfinder) regularly for fishing in the area. He is still shopping sport fishing boats and I bet he ends up with a captain and a Buddy Davis, Weaver or Sculley. He wants to tournement fish but also cruise comfortably long and far. It should be interesting.

As for me, I'd get a 60-70 foot stabilized cockpit motor yacht I could handle myself. It would have to have classic lines, wood and stainlesss that will make chiropractors rich from all of the strained necks it causes. I need a crane and a center console for pulling kids and running around as well as my kayaks and windsurfers. Speed is no problem because I like getting there and being there about the same. Lastly, I want simple straight forward engineering that I can fix anywhere.

Oh and throw in a young Ukrainian woman who can cook.

My 45 would be at Slane within a week for a total redo and once completed, would stay in NY.... within 10 min bike ride of my "slightly" (yeah right) expanded house.
Then I would go a 58 cockpit MY for florida, the bahamas, the caribean.
.... and then maybe a modest little "chatteau" with about 100' of dockspace in like Costa Rica or someplace like that.

ooops almost forgot .... have you ever seen J.Buffet's "Margaritavich Rybo" (boat so pretty, makes ya wanna just cry) ... maybe ...... hmmm

Don't even get me started on Buffet. My opinion ain't printable in polite company......

Buying another 45C and handing it to Slane along with a big enough check to cover a pair of Cummins 660 QSMs and the "express refit" would certainly be appealing. That'd be a boat that could literally go anywhere at a darn nice clip yet be fully functional for my "day boat" stuff.

Then I'd need something big enough that the 45Express could be a tender to

The new 64C would be nice. I also like the late model 55C with 3412E Cats. But since money is no object, I'll have to give a call to Hines Farley, Rybovich and Whiticar.

I also would have to talk with Tom Slane. I would be happy to give him a 65C for a complete refit.

As far as a Slane express, I have been on the 46 Express he built and it is impressive to say the least. Tom, Bobby Rice, one of the owners and myself were able to stand in the ER between the Rolls engines! That boat has since been repowered with 8V92's and is now for sale, any takers?

Bruce, I hope your buddies didn't forget how you took care of them when they weren't rich....

OK, I want something big enough to have Blue Note as a tender. Is the SS United States still available? I hear they have all the asbestos taken out now and she's ready for a new interior. AND, the United States is still faster than a lot of new motoryachts. And runs on bunker, which is cheaper. Of course, she takes a few sea miles to get up to speed....

Now the guy who does have "no object money" is Mr. W. Buffet (not J.). He just parted company with his "Mercury" and bought a Cadillac DTS. But I guess the that latest Cadillac doesn't qualify as a boat anymore.

I can't get enough of the Great Lakes. It'd better be bigtime sea-worthy, with stabilizers. Maybe a Burger or Palmer-Johnson, which are GLakes home grown. I wouldn't mind a 60+ Hatt CNV for high speed wave knockin'.

The Ultimate

Many wealthy yachties fly to meet their boat in exotic places. That would be easier if I could land right on the boat.
I figure the Ronald Reagan would be easy enough to land on, and have plenty of space for the Garlington, G+S, Rybovich, and of course Hatteras sport fishers in the 'tween decks. Maybe two or three of each. Might as well include an America's Cup racer for those times when a "simple" sail around the buoys is in order. I'd have a Spruance class destroyer for a tender.
I wouldn't have to worry about pirates in those far off exotic places either when the "mother ship" has a squadron of jet fighters orbiting overhead, and a Los Angeles class nuclear sub beneath for those fish watching excursions.
Of course, the mother ship is nuclear powered (and armed) also, so there's plenty of range, but the conversion of the interior to "yacht standards" might cost a bit.

Luckydave215, Remember that we only have $100 Million to play with here, actually about half that after taxes! You've spent well over that just on toys and now you're in DEEP DEBT already! You may have to pull back on those dreams just a bit so that you can still have enough left over to live on and enjoy the rest of your life!

I guess even lottery winners still need to live on a budget!

For me it would be the old original 70 Hatteras Motor Yacht. It is the most beautiful mid size motor yacht design ever to come from Jack Hargrave's vast talent. That boat with modern paint, machinery, interior and electronics would be comfortable and reasonably managable.

Ahh yes. The perfect motoryacht. I like how you think. Sometimes I just pull up the listings of the 70 on YW and imagine the possibilities.

Sky and SeaEric, I love the 70MY as well. Adding a cockpit to that boat would make it PERFECT! There was one painted Awlgrip Ice Blue listed for a while at only $399k! Now I see it is still listed but they upped the price to $455k, who knows why. That is ALOT of boat for $400k! I would rather one of those than a more expensive and newer 61-63'MY.

Hey Byron,

Where did you see that 70MY? Could be the next logical step for me in expanding my fleet.

She's for sale on YachtWorld. I have been aboard her many times. Nice boat, original owner, low hours, all original mechanicals and interior too. Ice blue paint job is so so, custom teak decks are beautiful. When someone buys her and starts using her regularly, lots of stuff is gonna fail. When the original broker didn't sell her for $399K (the owner was firm on that #) the new broker upped the ask to like $455K.

Just looked at it on YachtWorld after Byron talked about it. It does look impressive. Hate to sound dumb but it has the disclaimer NOT FOR SALE OR CHARTER TO US RESIDENTS IN US WATERS.

Does this mean I have to go to wherever the home port is to purchase the boat?

Hey Pat,

Get your signs and contract together for FREEBIRD. We may be headed to Lauderdale.

Oh, no...FREEBIRD'S coming to town! Guess you're wanting to cash in on that 45c ride I promised, eh?

Dang Son, I'm glad you were payin' attention, and yes, I will take you up on that offer. Then I'll take you for a ride on Big Bird. :D

Randy,

I am headed to Lauderdale tomorow... :D

You want to meet me there?

Randy, Surely a broker can explain better that I, but it just means that the boat is registered outside of the US (owner avoiding paying taxes) and you will have to take delivery in the Bahamas, that's all. Quite common on larger (read: more expensive) vessels. GO FOR IT!
