I believe you have the same mind set as I regarding qualifications to operate a boat. While no one wants more of big brother, if we don't do whatever is necessary to keep BB off our backs, he will be climbing all over us. Your plan to join the US Power Squadron is excellent. By the way they have some outstanding advanced courses available only to their membership. Personally, I think it's a great deal for any serious boater to consider. The Power Squadron and/or the CG Aux are both excellent organizations, with somewhat different missions. The Aux actually does surface and air operations with the regular CG which I believe is the main difference between them. The Power Squadron is a much older organization. One of the founders was Charles Chapman (yes THE Charles Chapman). They have produced more safe boaters with their courses for the public and other courses for their members than anyone else. Good Luck with it.

Incidentally, I stopped doing patrols with the Aux over 5 years ago when I developed major problems with my heart. While I could have kept quiet about it and maybe continue doing patrols, I felt that it was unfair and downright dangerous not only to me but to my crew. As I stated in an earlier post, talk to your insurance agent and ask to be able to speak to an underwriter. These guys/gals (underwriters) are usually at a disadvantage with the subject of qualifications and a few minutes of "education" may be all you need to enlighten them. Be sure to get stats to quote that licensed skippers, advanced training with the PS or coxwain qualification with the Aux have almost no significant claims and are therefore an outstanding risk.

Did you do those patrols with your own boat? How does that work?
 
For surface operations for the most part you use your boat or another members boat. There are many extra things that need to be installed and/or aboard in order to qualify your vessel for CG use. It's a rather long list and must be inspected by a qualified certification examiner to ensure that the extra equipment is in fact on board and functional. After getting the vessel ready and inspected, an "offer of use" form is submitted to the regular CG and your boat will be referred to as an official "facility" and the appropriate decals/identification will be issued. As a member in good standing who offers their vessel for CG patrols and other operations including port security, clear channel, search and rescue etc. you or another coxwain will receive official orders for that particular operation. The vessel owner may not yet be crew or coxwain qualified but may (should) be along as a trainee. In the event of a situation that damages your vessel during the course of official duty, the CG becomes responsible for the repairs. The extent of the repairs will be determined by a regular CG inspector and the tab is taken care of by the CG. (you gotta love it). Along with assuming the "insurance" during a patrol, which is in force from the time you leave your home dock, until you return, they also pay for your fuel, oil ice, lunch, dinner etc. This is not a money maker, the program is geared to help defrey some of the costs involved with operating another facility thereby saving the government money by not having to buy additional vessels and providing crews. Many of our qualified members also achieve crew and engineer status on regular CG vessels and go on regular official duty with the full time regulars...but at no pay except for food, lodging etc. Some of our people (myself included), have crewed on the CG tall ship the Eagle, which is quite a thrill. Not recommended for old guys like me, but I was 20 years younger at least at that time.

We also participate in ice patrols on ice breakers and do air patrols as well using our own aircraft. It would take many pages to try to detail everything that a person can do in the CG Aux. As a member you volunteer for every job that is of interest to you and start training for it. Many of us are not involved in operations anymore and may work in the comms center at the various CG stations. Very often when someone clicks on to Ch 16 to call the CG, the person at the station may very well be an a member of the Aux.

I’ve arranged for you all to take the class as a private group from the American Red Cross, 801 McCallie Ave in Chattanooga. For a discounted price of $50. You’ll need to call Julie Dooley at the Red Cross at 423.265.3455x126 or 423.432.4222 cell to RSVP a seat. Again, you pay her at time of class.



Our next class in the area is in Knoxville starting January 9 at Concord Marina. If any of your dock mates are jealous of your knowledge you enjoyed our class, please spread the word. We’ve had several inquiries about coming back to Chattanooga again, and we would love to, and in fact will be reserving the same weeks next year to return.



Your certificates will be sent out in about a week-10 days. So start filling out your license applications. Don’t wait till this summer as you’ll get involved in boating and then your time will be near the permitted time to apply. Ummm, thanks for the congrats guys, but I think you need to read my post again about my being a captain. LOL

I didn't go to that course having changed to the new one they are offering in Knoxville starting January 9.
 
Randy, it sounded like you didn't take the course, but rather just went and sat for the exam without taking the sea school course. Hence, everyone's misunderstanding. Your prior post isn't really clear on that.

Got a call back from the guy at TrueCourse who told me it would be no problem to transfer me to that upcoming class in Knoxville. This will save me over 1,000 miles of driving, not to mention the time and money it will save. It will be much easier for me to concentrate on the work at hand, and I won't have to leave work early to make the weekday classes.

The Knoxville class starts on January 9, so I'll shut up until then except to respond to anything else that comes up on this thread. It's a good thing I've been talking about this on the net as it was shear luck a friend of mine asked on Facebook how long the course took. I honestly didn't remember, so I looked at the website and just happened to see they had added this new date. Oh yeah, the class has already been confirmed.

Ran out of Blood pressure meds so I stopped looking at FCB. Sadamt gets the blood boiling.

If Randy gets the hat (and I hope he does) he will probably leave it on my boat next time through just like the Hatt hat.
 
Alprazolam... around here is better known as DRAMA-mine. I dont take BP meds so I hafta stay away LOL... of course a lite diuretic chased with some pepto always seems to work for me when I deal with FB. (wink). ws
