Man, talk about up in the air, until yesterday, it looked like this Knoxville class might not be happening. This after getting a response from the earlier email exchange I had with the school. When I mentioned I hadn't gotten any information on the upcoming class, the simple response was, "we need more people".

I suggested they run an ad in the local paper as well as another local publication I told them about, but I told them I would be very disappointed if this class was canceled as it was my understanding it was a done deal when I switched from the Chattanooga location. Thankfully I got another email confirming the class would take place. I just wonder now if I'll be in a class by myself. :D

Yo, dcate, wanna be a shrimpin' boat captain?

Not sure about that rhyme.. Just look at that tv screen to your left and keep that triangle looking thing in the darker blue color areas. Then turn this wheel here to move that triangle thing there.

Well, today is the day, the first day of school. It's been a long time since I've sat in a classroom, but this will be the first time I've ever taken a class in something that interested me to this degree.

With any luck, it could lead to a whole new career where I would actually be paid for something I would do for free. It couldn't get any better than that. Y'all be thinking about what you can get me as a graduation present. :D

Randy, if you get your captains license I will throw you off the Hatt Trick from the Flybridge....ok? LOL ppat

p.s. knock em dead!

A DVD of Capt Ron ?? Or should it be Capt Ran?

There he goes again counting his eggs before they hatch ;)

Lunch break but so far so good. Test chart is Long Island Sound so I guess coming to see yoose gize was a good thing after all.

Let's all be honest....Randy's going to pass.

If the teacher works for U of Tenn, no one has ever failed a class.

Besides, how tough can the test be..

HE LIVES IN TENN...

Just keep the land to your port and starboard is all you need to know.....

Randy called before said that this Right on red return is pretty neat stuff :D

Is that like "No child left behind"? Readin' ritin' and cypherin'... ws

Well, it was certainly an interesting first day. The instructor seems like a nice guy, and he used to pilot B52's. That in itself commands respect. He also holds a near coastal 100T master. I'm not sure if anybody else is going for that besides me, but he assured me that if I ended up in a class by myself, it would be no problem.

We spent the day learning about timid virgins and such. This plotting stuff isn't that hard as long as you remember all the deviation info and pay attention to the trick parts of the question. Still can't see ever using it in real life, but I can see how it could come in handy if I run through a time warp and find myself surrounded by Japanese Zero's.

Looks like we'll be working off three practice charts, east LIS, Block Island Sound, and Chesapeake Bay. We get to pick which one we want to test on, so I figure I'll choose the east LIS chart. At least it looks familiar thanks to Walter P.

Tomorrow will be an all dayer in terms of plotting.

Final Countdown. Great movie! Lots of F-14s.

I've been told that our navy still uses celestial nav to verify all the electronics. I guess the enemy may be able to screw with radios and satellites, but they still can't move the stars around.

Good luck with the class.

Thanks Derek, glad somebody got the Final Countdown bit.

My instructor talked about having used a sextant in his flying days, but he says they don't anymore. Never even knew they used sextants in military planes before.

Oh yeah, before I forget again, he told me that a captain's license wasn't required when being paid to do deliveries. I always thought it was required for anything that made you money, but he said only if you are being paid to ride somebody around on a boat.

My power squadron just started a class on sexton's last week. I signed up for it till I found out it's a 5 MONTH school!!!! Since I do not plan on crossing the Pacific Ocean in a sailboat...... Will stick to using my GPS with my paper charts and doing DR as a backup..
Besides, Tuesday nights are my "Lillian Sports Bar" chicken wing night (.49 cent wings).....
