Whats the latest on your condition in the North East with Sandy?

Ambrosia Mae is well tied and fendered in New Haven, CT, but like everyone, I'm real worried about the entire dock leaving us. I was there yesterday at low tide and it looked like we have about 8 - 9 feet of piling above the normal high tide mark. Pulling was not an option, as the only place that they could put me will be under 5' of water if it comes in like predicted.

High tide right now and it was about a foot higher than last night. I am hering that with the wind clocking south and a 1 ft lower base tide level this evening may be lower than this afternoon.

That would be good because if it is 2 ft higher it puts it over the seawall and kills the power.

Latest reports are predicting the Navesink River to rise 10-12ft above normal tide levels. Same with NY Harbor. I thought the storm passing south of us would be better but not so for the surge. I was thinking of moving the boat up the Hudson but that wasn't any better during Irene and the surge predictions are the same as were I am, and that's another 60 miles north and about 50miles inland.

Most storms slide up the coast pushing the surge ahead of them half of it spilling out on the sea side. I dont think I've ever seen a yankee hurricane come in perpendicular to the shoreline. With the V created by Jersey and long Island Its not only going to funnel the surge up NY Harbor but block up all the rainwater and river runoff. It's going to be interesting for sure.

The good thing is the NE quadrant of this storm is weaker and has a lot less moisture. Rainfall amounts shouldn't be too bad. Unfortunately the winds keep intensifying. It's now 90mph gusting to 110mph. It should be coming in pretty soon but with the TS winds extending almost 500 miles from the center, we'll be feeling this for a while. I don't know how you Fl guys go through this every year and sometimes several times per year. I guess it teaches you how to best prepare and what not to do. Since I left Fl to get away from hurricanes, I've run into 2 now and Fl hasn't seen any. Next thing is my insurance won't cover me if I'm in NY or NJ during storm season.

Hi All,

As of 1:45 on 10/29:

Here in coastal Mass (Buzzards Bay) ie Marion, Mattapoisett, Westport, Dartmouth, Fairhaven etc it's now blowing 30 with gusts up to 40, rain, 59 degrees.

Todays low tide was higher than a normal high tide.

Image 1 is Padanaram (Dartmouth) Town Landing at appx an hour after low tide. During a normal low tide the front of that aluminum ramp is usually 5-6 feet lower than it shows here . (ps this is on the north side of the Padanaram bridge ie the protected side.

Image 2 is the Yacht Club at appx an hour after low tide. During a normal low tide those docks are appx 6 feet lower than they show here.

Image 3 is New Redford's inner harbor inside the massive hurricane barrier. Huge whitecaps, blowing rain, spray and water coming over onto the parking lots.

Pascal, as of this writing the Hurricane Barrier is open. They intend to close it in the next 3 or 4 hours.

Storm surge for Dartmouth is still predicted to be 4-6 feet, and since we live on the harbors edge that puts it in my driveway. Actually we live kind of directly behind the aluminum ramp and large white boat.....

A couple of more images just taken an hour or so ago....

Image 1 is an example of the massive fishing fleet that runs out of New Bedford. These 3 are owned by the same person. New Bedfords inner harbor is PACKED with monsters much bigger than these three.

Images 2 and 3 I thought Jack might find interesting. Looks like a 65C. Have never seen it at Fairhaven Shipyard before. Jack, any chance you know the boat?

Huge misconception about us in Florida having yearly hurricanes.... Here in Jacksonville area our last hurricane was in 1964........The Panhandle does get a good amount..
We did get TS Berle, and Debbie this year.winds to 40mph and rain..but only for a few hours.And it's been years before we had the last one before them.
.. But N.E.. is the place that takes a lot of hits. You had a bad hurricane just last last year..Add onto that the winter storms you get...

Actually as the storm moves closer to the coast the moisture flow from the SE quadrant gets cut off by the land mass and the storm starts to feed from the east side intensifying in the NE quadrant

Hi All,

For those of you unfamiliar with the Hurricane Barrier Pascal and I referenced it's a massive and I mean massive stone barrier built in the 60's with sophisticated (for that time) pumping systems and massive doors on land and sea that close to protect the fishing fleet, factories (when they used to humm) and homes. The main barrier stretches across New Bedford Harbor (3+ miles I believe) and has a huge opening in the middle (big enough for cruise liners and tankers) that can be closed to seal the harbor.

A couple of quick images:

Image 1 and 2 are of the hurricane barrier protecting new bedford harbor. Don't let the image fool you those barrier walls are 18+ feet ABOVE the high water mark.

Image 3 is Padanaram Harbor about 12 miles away where I live. Primarily a blowboat meca, it only has a breakwater to protect the outer harbor however the inner harbor has the added protection of the bridge unfortunately the opening is small (I can't fit thru) and the water level at a normal low tide is 4-5 feet.

Just got this picture of the marina next door to our club,. The boats in the foreground are blocked on land. The fuel dock and building are gone. Got a few pics of our club but no good shots of the boat. I did get one that shows part of it in the slip and she looks OK.

I'm south of that down the river. I'm at Atlantis Yacht Club in Monmouth Beach. We do take a few transients but it's in a ways if you're just looking for a place for the night. Here's a shot of Atlantic Highlands Municipal Marina taken earlier today.

Hi All,

As of 6:00 pm on 10/29:

Here in coastal Mass (Buzzards Bay) ie Marion, Mattapoisett, Westport, Dartmouth, Fairhaven etc it's now blowing 45 with gusts up to 60, light but pelting rain, 54 degrees.

Blowing like a banshee, few large branches down,strange very dark gray/purple sky with clear blue holes almost like a tornado. Lost power 4 times for 20 seconds or so.

Lots of flooding now, began in the last hour and a half. Noticeable change in that short period of time, docks over-topped, bridge is closed due to waves breaking over it. Water six inches up the yacht club foundation.

Storm surge has crested the barrier wall at the bottom of my street and has progressed up maybe 20 feet, that puts it 15 feet from my driveway.
