Ang...That tank is not a bomb. It scares you because it is big and red. There isn't any compressed stuff I can think of that is safer than CO2. Well maybe nitrogen. We used that in airplane tires as it doesn't expand or contract with temperature changes. Any tank of compressed stuff will hiss like crazy when opened, most will burn or support combustion, so CO2 is very safe. You do need to tie any tank down before opening it so you don't have to chase it around. Really, IMHO CO2 is the best chemical for quenching a fire. It leaves no residue, and although it is cold as it leaves the tank, it warms immedietly. I can't imagine anything that would be damaged in an engine room by the CO2 with the exception of the fool that locked himself in the engine room before setting off the CO2 tank. He would surely qualify for the Darwin award. Never close yourself in the engine room.
