I have one of these beasts in my port engine room. Every surveyor and fire extinguisher guy who sees this tells me I need to remove it from the boat, acknowledging I have the new FE 241 in place and don't need the big tank anymore. However, the tank is inspected and tagged with a current in-service date. So, WHY does everyone think I should get rid of it? It's in fine operational status and the way I see it, it's a second, independent fire supression system for all three engine rooms. Is there such as thing as having too many extinguishers, or is this like the dentist that always says I should have my widsom teeth removed because he doesn't like to work on them, even though there is nothing wrong with them? Do the fire guys just not like to mess with the big, heavy tank? Just curious....I'm keeping mine!

Ang, just curious. Does your new system work/plumbed to all three of your engine spaces? Did your old CO2 system cover all 3 ER spaces?

In my boat I have a separate (smaller) 80# tank for the genny ER and the larger (#100) tank covers the split ERs. While I agree newer products are available, I agree with you - as long as the CO2 is certified and works, why remove it?
I do understand having a CO2 system armed and ready to discharge always presents a risk to personnel in confined spaces below decks, albeit a small one. If I could trade mine for something safer at no cost to me - I'd do it, but I hate to pay big boat bucks for something different.

There is NOTHING better than CO2 when it comes to putting out fires when fuel may be involved.

Nothing.

Look, I pulled my bottle and replaced it with a FE241, but it was only because the bottle would have failed hydro and needed one (I know enough about cylinders to do the visual part, and trust me - it would have failed), plus the actuator was trashed.

If you have a GOOD CO2 system LEAVE IT IN THE BOAT.

Nobody does 'em any more but its not because the new "clean agents" are better. Those require electrical relay boxes to shut down diesels (because diesels will "eat" the extinguishing agent and keep running!) and if the fire is ELECTRICAL in origin and burns up your stop solenoid cabling before the bottle goes off.......

A hydro and recharge on one of these bottles is not expensive. If its working leave it in there!

Sometimes "newer" isn't better. This is one of those times. The ONLY disadvantages CO2 has is that (1) it WILL suffocate you where the "clean agents" will not and (2) the bottle, piping and actuators are both large and heavy.

Bear,

I have a FE 241 tank suspended over each engine, and then a third tank in the genny room. They are all independent of each other.

The old CO2 which is still in place and active, does cover all three engines rooms from the one giant tank.

I just received a quote of $175 plus expenses to test and recertify my system. That includes hydro, weighing, and functional system test (essentially blowing off a small test cylinder through the system). It also includes checking the HAD, the manual trip cable, and the pressure switch.

Is this reasonable?

Sounds very reasonable if someone is going to spend a couple of hours to do it. $175 is not a lot.

excellent price! I got a "deal" and paid 450.00 for my 35lb bottle and painted the bottle myself.
I have seen the big 75lb bottles go to 1200.00 for the service.

I paid $500 or $550 for the three of the FE 241 tanks in the engine rooms, the giant CO2 tank, and 10 handhelds to be inspected and re-tagged.

Well, well, well.... It looks like the local fire guys are going to set it off and then remove the tank. One Mr. Pat Bustle from here is going to come down and take it off my hands...

Anybody got any ideas how I could video tape the whole thing from inside the engine room? I think I might have my first UTUBE video... :)

I have a digital cam corder.... I also have a small remote camera that I might be able to plug into it but I want the sound too!

Cheers,

Set that baby up on a tripod and pull the ring. Yer gonna SIYPs when it lets go ! ws

Actually, if the camera is in the ER you wont see much after 1-2 seconds! Open the hatches and put the tripod up on deck. One on the dock would be cool too! Watch the wind direction for better coverage.
We used to test a 15 ton CARDOX tank (Co2) on our gas turbines, and on a calm day the whole yard would be fogged up. We'd end up getting phone calls from the neighbors! ws

Sorry guys, I couldnt bring myself to do it... I kept thinking about that $2000 inverter / charger sitting in there that is goofy enough without being frozen!

We disconnected it and hauled her out to the dock. FYI there is a manual release on the side of the head. We cracked it and let the C02 bleed out.

Yea I know.

Oh well, me and the puppy are ok! New system goes in today. And Pat Bustle gets a FREE (almost) tank and system. And a closet for the Admiral.

Sounds good to me...

Thanks to everyone.

Cute puppy, Ned.

Hey, that's a little tank! You scared of that? LOL I thought it was the big one. My big tank is as big as I am.

I'm glad to hear you accomplished the removal and that everyone got what they wanted out of it. :D

I hope you and the Admiral will join us on Feb. 15.

Ang -
How big is that CO2 bomb of yours and where is it in relation to the second stateroom?

Reading this thread has made me just a wee bit interested in such things.

See you in Miami....(;-))

I'm sure you purchased the appropriate carbon credits before letting all of that dasterdly CO2 into the atmosphere.....right?

I can feel the earth warming already.

Awe, come on Ed...Ned was just helping grant MikeP's wish of bringing the ocean to Mexico City! :)

Passages, my bomb of a tank is in the engine room just forward of your stateroom, but on the far end of the engine room from you. If it makes you feel any better....my giant tank has a current inspection and tag on it. Or was that the one tank they refused to tag???? Just kidding, the one they refused to tag was the handheld on the flybridge, outside, that is rusted on the outside of the bottle. I didn't need that one in count requirement anyway.

Here it is - to put it in perspective, it's about as tall as I am. [file won't upload...I'll try again later]
