Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
With the turmoil of late on the forum I found myself spending a surprising amount of time thinking about how I felt about the discussion. This is the first forum that I can remember joining, though I have visited many other forums. There are several reasons this happened. The first is that I have made the decision that my next boat will be a Hatteras convertible after thirty plus years of wanting one. I’m sure everyone here understands the reasoning that led me to this decision. Well, maybe the Hatteras part anyway. The second reason that I joined is that, after reading many of the threads, I saw lots of wisdom and experience being politely and readily shared with almost no animosity or pomposity. Another reason was that I found the forum to be frequented by mature folks of all ages and walks in life who share my lifetime need to be on the water. And, as a future owner, I didn’t have to already own a Hatteras to be a part of the discussions and ask for advice.
I would like to remind everyone that two different people can read the same sentence and perceive different meanings from that sentence. Words often have more than one meaning and personal experience can and does affect a person’s perception of meaning differently. I implore those folks with lots of experience to share that have left the forum to reconsider that decision. I am grateful that this forum exists and that it has brought together the caliber of good people that it has. As someone said in another thread, it‘s like a family. Perhaps a bit dysfunctional at times but then all families are. They just don’t all have the same dysfunctions.

Sincerely,
Thom

Since the beginning of this site, there have been those who have left because they were mad or upset with someone or something. Almost all of them have come back. It's just too hard to stay away for long. Don't worry about the knowledge base. It will be here as long as this site exists.

As a 'silent partner' to many of the discussions for over a year... I have found the discussion/debate/dialogue to be very informative and, in many cases, quite funny. In many ways, it seems the personalities of the boats are reflected in the owners comments.

I hope to be a Hatteras owner in the future - and greatly enjoy the comments/observations/opinions in the present.

It's a great site... keep it up.

I guess I missed something but now I do see that we are missing many familiar faces on this forum. Many of the diehards are gone or dont participate. I dont participate as much since I no longer own a Hatteras or any boat for that matter but I still have many friends that I gained from this forum so I still participate some.

Well one thing is for sure, cant blame Freebird for members leaving this time.

I don't mean to slight anyone, but the only member I've noticed who is missing is Brian Degulis. Then again, he was a casualty of war I suppose, despite the return of garyd, another regular contributor.

There are a number of oldtimers who seem to have left for whatever reason, like Wild Bill, starman, Boss Lady (he's been busy)... all of whom were very good contributors in every sense of the word. Not to stir the pot (seriously), but who are we missing?

When it comes to knowledge of boating topics in general and Hatteras yachts in particular, this forum has no competition. It's not perfect nor will it ever be, but who wants perfection? I hear it's overrated and impossible to achieve, just like 100% customer satisfaction regardless of how hard a business owner strives for it.

Dr Jim, Mike P, Mario,

Sky, this is so true, and some who should still be gone somehow aren't. The irony is that if the Administrator or a Moderator places a block or a ban on a member's posting abilities, it's been proven that all that member has to do is assume another identity and continue on! Even though it's quite obvious to other members who it really is, somehow nothing is done to correct it. Then when nobody's looking create ANOTHER screen name, just maybe misspell your original well known banned/restricted name by one letter to really snub the Administrator and Moderators to say, "I'm back whether you liike it or not!" Wow. There's just no denying the nerve of some people. They just don't get it. Any member that takes any action that is specifically designed to counteract the actions or decisions of the Administrator or Moderator(s) should be STRICTLY forbidden in my opinion, and automatically banned for life under any and all screen names. We MUST respect the wishes of the Administrator and Moderators.

I cannot imagine how anyone would not see this type of behavior as incredibly disrespectful to Sam's Marine and the actions and obvious wishes of the people that own and run it. If there were only a way to really look at the number of posts that a member has made, then take from that number all the posts that just do not truly contribute much or any boating related info, then we could see who's presence and participation here is really important and therefore what the site wants to promote. This forum is not to be used like Twitter, it is a discussion forum and short one-liners and meaningless BS posts just do not belong here. While many of us have gotten caught up in them at times when baited, if the helpful and meaningful posts FAR outnumber the meaningless posts you know that you have a valuable, contributing member. We are here to discuss and learn from each other about Hatteras-specific and boating-specific topics, not to just BS for the sake of posting on an internet forum. There are many, many other places on the internet to BS with friends about whatever. Why is it so hard to understand that this is NOT such a place?

It's just fine that many of the members here tend to look and read without posting much, but notice that when they do post it is usually quite good information or questions on Hatteras or boating specific topics. If we could get all members to focus more on the boating topics rather than the one-line responses, BS and silly banter that is specifically listed in the rules section as forbidden, this site would flow much smoother like it used to long ago.

Just my $.02.

I see Brian was back on line last night as a registered user. Interesting that there is another member who is advertizing services and commercial sites, not Genesis, I guess when the admin checks, it is in between commercial ads, at least they do not seem to be competing with Sams.
Yes,the forum is a great resource and the majority of contributers are a valuable source of knowledge and has certainly made my introduction to Florida and Bahamas cruising much more pleasant and rewarding. Thanks to all.

.

Wow here you go breaking the rules as I see it you have just attacked a member! Read the last sentence " respect the wishes of the Administrator"

Doug knows who is who and if he wanted the member gone he would be gone.
Please stop stirring the pot this is what the problem is based on!

Dan, I'm sorry if you do not see that I was just stating my opinion, which is based on the facts that cannot be disputed.

Guess I am not here enough to have seen Dr Jim and Mario. However they use to have alot more to say than they do now.

Heck, let's just ramble on about our new boat that's not a Hatteras while we bash members who still own them. :)

Sorry Doug, but I couldn't let this one pass.

Personal animosity between members should be kept to pm's, if not, ban both.

I think Byron's point is that even if banned or asked to leave, that doesn't necessarily keep that person from participating. It was merely an example of the fact that none of us can stay away for long (which was my point). Heck, you even noticed Brian was back looking into what was going on.

Looking is the key word.

I know it's a hard thing to do, but we all pretty much know who the people causing the problems are, just don't take the bait they toss out here. Things got out of hand, a little hitch in the old git along, a little effort problem solved. It is a great forum, it's up to us the, users of the forum to keep it that way. Just like most marinas, it's not the marina itself that makes it a great place to moor up, it's the people that make it great.

No matter who you are someones is not going to like you, like my Dad use to say, you don't need to like someone to learn from them.
