You can get the original manual from Hatteras Yachts. Sam's have a great deal of depth in parts, knowledge and experience. There is no other boat that is as well-supported as a Hatteras Yacht. We also have owners of other makes on this forum because of the breadth of experience and knowledge. Welcome to the club.

There is no substitute for a lot of time on your boat. Like Juice said, in a few months you and she will be old friends.

We too have jumped into owning a Hatteras out of the blue for retirement travel, We have only had smaller blow boats and a ski boat prior, the fuel management is really like everyone said pull and return fuel to same tank, I was already very familiar with DD 671's, from construction equipment, same but different in many ways. I do transfer fuel from our aft tank to centerline tank fuel, management valves are clearly marked , we'll pull from aft tank return to centerline tank and it transfers very fast. Our tanks are not quite as large as yours but the center tank is the only feed the generator, and full only has 90 gallons with aft around 295. Everything on these boats impress me with the quality fit and finish. Our 43DC is 41 years old and we wouldn't trade down to a much newer plastic boat. Welcome to the forum there are a bunch of great guys with tons and tons of information with a side dish of humor added in.

Jim43dc, it sounds like you are living life with no regrets. I signed all of the final documents today for the purchase of my 48 cpmy. Funds transferred tomorrow. As I am sure all of you remember your days before taking possession of your Hatteras, my mind is racing with lists of lists. Things to check, verify and supply. Provisioning a boat from absolute zero to fully sea worthy gives anyone a glimpse into the mind of an obsessive compulsive disordered person. I have a notepad I have partially filled with inventories and concerns as well as things to learn about and questions to ask. I know this gal has some issues I need to deal with sooner than later but in the end I will make her right. Restoring her to her ultimate condition will be a blast as well as a good reason to drink. I feel like a kid at Christmas.

For anyone interested in the boat I bought:

I successfully took possession of my 1994 48 cpmy. I managed to get it 35 miles south to a new Marina. I even went through a bit of a squall with 40mph winds and 4-5 foot waves. Super impressed how she handled the waves. I understand completely why Hatteras has the reputation they have. Stunningly stable. I did find I had a damp salon carpet on the starboard side and when I went into the engine room I discovered about a half inch of water in the walkway between the engines. Looking at it I was a bit puzzled by that as the walkway between the engines is a fiberglass tub so to speak. There was no way for the water to get there yet there it was. The previous owner stated he had never had any problem with water and that he had driven through rougher seas than 4 footers. All of the windows were replaced and resealed in 2019. I realize asking for input or ideas is futile as there are an unlimited number of ways for water to get into a boat…..yet……?

Maybe not. That sounds about right for a keel leak. Sounds worse than it is.

On our '85 43' my we had issues with the bilge pump thru hulls not having a high enough loop to prevent water from flowing into the bilge and holding tank. We planed out over Oneida once and it filled the holding tank. .
Other times the aft shower bilge would cycle full/empty. Adding to the loop height made a difference. Check the bilge pump loop for that area and ensure it goes up the side of the hull.

Air compressor for horns, I believe.

That makes sense. The trumpets are mounted right outside. Thanks

That's a proper compressor. Mine actually had a rusty version of this under the helm for the horn...which seemed just ridiculous to me.

I hate clutter and threw it all in the trash - and bought a new, cheap stainless double horn set on Ebay.

First night on the Hatteras. Yesterday when it was 85 outside all 3 AC units kept it cool inside. This morning it is 45 degrees. The two staterooms are toasty warm but the main salon will only blow cold air. There is an SMX ir on the wall. I believe it is a cruisair compressor. I have an electronics background but know very little about AC/heat systems. Any idea where to start?

Its quite possible that the one unit is not set to automatic which would stop it from reversing to heat. Get the smx manual out and check the operating parameters, its easy to set up.

I found the manual online. The programming instructions start out referring to the SMX ir control then half way through refers to SMX 2. It doesn’t seem to want to let me program the electric heat function. I did a factory reset. It said the heat is turned off by default.

Simpson Lawrence V2000 windlass is shorted. It blew the ANL-50 50 amp fuse behind the panel. A jump box confirmed it was shorted. It put on quite a light show in the bow. Who knew you could weld with a jump box?

ahhhh another day with the new boat. I’m trying to figure out how to dismount the flat panel TV in the salon. It says it is an LG hdmi tv but someone pinched and cut the hdmi cable. I can’t seem to reach the cable to replace it as it is inside the retracting box. I tried to just unscrew the mount but that didn’t work. The wood box would not let go. It hung on more than my ex-wife. Anyone have any ideas?

Reach up underneath and see if there is a pull cord to release the bottom part of the TV mount. If so that will let the bottom swing out and then push set up to unhinge at the top. Looks tight but if they got it in it will come out the came way.

As for the windlass I just installed a Good Automatic Windlass on my 46. Have one on my 34 that works better hurt than a simpson lawrence will brand new. And it's only hurt do to operator error! (Me)

Thanks madhatter! I am slowly making my way through this list of issues. Never owned a new boat and never will unless my lottery numbers come through in which case there is a Norhavn I have my eye on. In the mean time I only buy used boats with issues every 4 or 5 years. I must be a masochist.

Make no mistake, new boats with their modern electronics and electrical systems come with squawk lists as long as yours. And in this day and age you don't want to count on a dealership taking care of things properly, and in a timely fashion. So headaches either way, might as well save a boatload of money.

Amen to that. At least with a used boat you know to expect a punch list. With a new boat, you have the illusion that everything will work as it's supposed to. Which seems very unlikely.

I think the first thing I'd do with a new boat would be to get a survey.

My first marina I was in also had three slips reserved for a local builder (Neptunus Yachts). I have watched new boats leave the place with a crew of workers still onboard to finish it before being delivered to the owners.

I agree on the new boat issue, I was hired to survey an almost new (2020) Riviera, which is a good quality boat, I questioned why they needed a survey and got my answer when I found things like a bilge pump not working and a few other things like that. The hardest thing was trying to figure out how to turn things on with the electronic keypad controlling everything. I don’t know how anyone can live with those things. To test the stove you had to know what they call it, I think it was the cooker, then go through the menu to find it so you can turn it on. Even the young tech types on board were having a hard time with the system. Give me a simple breaker panel any day. John
