I think an additive like optilube summer plus might extend the life of the injectors but as importantly increase cetane and efficiency.

Did your mechanic set the racks and adjust the valves when he replaced the injectors? This should have been done before firing the engine.

A push rod wont stick but a rocker arm will. That too should have been addressed before firing the engine. Something is wrong if the rockers wont pivot freely on their shafts.

Yes, the rack was set and valves were adjusted. Not sure what was done with the rod or arm, but my mechanic is well experienced with Detroit's. It's his sole business.

Then you should have a smooth clean running engine. Get them tuned up every year.

Depends on the fuel. Most diesel today is crap. Lower cetane and lower lubricity. Detroits were designed when the standards for fuel were very different. Sometimes you need to add something to get it closer to what the fuel was like way back when.

My 1966 engines do better with additive. Cleaner and smoother.

What is a reasonable life expectancy for these injectors? I do use a good cetane booster which really made a difference when I first bought the boat.

We could go on for a while about lubricity. We are definitely seeing premature wear as a result of fuel lubricity. Particularly with heating oil since that is not even additized to road fuel standards which are marginal to start with. Other than that, the life of an injection system is about a tablespoon of dirt. You can do that over thousands of hours or in ten seconds.

Unfortunately there isn't a pat answer like "5000 hours." There are too many variables. However 3000 plus hours doesn't sound too bad in the world of ULSD fuel.

Injectors installed, also rebuilt the starboard alternator and did a sea trial this morning. It went very well. Fast starts, just a small puff of blue from the old engine (3700 hours SMOH) and none from the starboard (about 2000 SMOH). We pushed the throttles slowly to WOT and reached 2325 (helm gages) and speed 18.7 kts, a new record. NO SMOKE!! :) The props have an extra 0.5" pitch over factory specs so I'm happy. The slight vibration is also gone. 15.6 kt at 2000. Sweet.

I mentioned a slight oil leak in one starboard turbo and on examination, there was a fair bit of oil on the vanes and in the bottom. It was also not spinning freely. R&R turbos is next on the list, but it came up to RPM in the sea trail.

Another happy boater!

Scott you mentioned one and Scroddy you did not! What are you using in your boats? I dump a gallon of Lucas every now and then but what do each of you think is the best for the 71 series?

Optilube. I use the summer plus blend as I dont need cold weather additives. Its treatment rate is about 1 oz for 10 gallons. Cost is $60+- a gallon.

I recall a thread some time back where folks were adding a lubricant fuel conditioner to the Racor when changing a filter, as well as to the fuel tank. I couldn't find the thread. Anyone remember what was being used, and question 2, can it be done with out changing filters? I just replaced mine before running south.

My engines "Volvo's" run better with DieselKleen additive. I have also used it to pre fill filters.
Grey bottle is summer blend that I use.

Naturally, Scott and I both like what we sell. I use Stanadyne for everything and I've had excellent results, less smoke, better fuel system life and efficiency. The one place I actually recorded the data, the TDI had enough of a mileage increase to make it pay to use additive. I wouldn't doubt the others are similar.

That being said, any good additive is a huge improvement over what passes for diesel fuel today.

$60 +_ a gallon sounds like a great deal want to buy some property :D

Does Stanadyne increase cetane?

I will look for the test of Lubricity additives I had somewhere but I remember one of the top 10 was 2 cycle oil and it was the cheapest. Never tried it but sounds logical
Derek any thought on that?

Yes, Stanadyne has a cetane booster. Additive manufacturers will show you all their test results that prove that ATF or MMO or two-stroke oil isn't as good as their product. IMHO it may work well as a lubricant, but if you're going to spend money on something to add to diesel fuel you might as well spend it on something with a cetane booster. As I said before, the mileage improvement on the Jetta wasn't just measureable, it actually more than paid for the additive.
