Did your mechanic set the racks and adjust the valves when he replaced the injectors? This should have been done before firing the engine.
A push rod wont stick but a rocker arm will. That too should have been addressed before firing the engine. Something is wrong if the rockers wont pivot freely on their shafts.
Then you should have a smooth clean running engine. Get them tuned up every year.
I think an additive like optilube summer plus might extend the life of the injectors but as importantly increase cetane and efficiency.
Scott you mentioned one and Scroddy you did not! What are you using in your boats? I dump a gallon of Lucas every now and then but what do each of you think is the best for the 71 series?![]()
Optilube. I use the summer plus blend as I dont need cold weather additives. Its treatment rate is about 1 oz for 10 gallons. Cost is $60+- a gallon.
Naturally, Scott and I both like what we sell. I use Stanadyne for everything and I've had excellent results, less smoke, better fuel system life and efficiency. The one place I actually recorded the data, the TDI had enough of a mileage increase to make it pay to use additive. I wouldn't doubt the others are similar.
That being said, any good additive is a huge improvement over what passes for diesel fuel today.
Dan.
$60 to treat 1500 to 2000 gallons is pretty good.
Here's the best test I've seen published
