Great article but really sad. I have always thought that the ethanol idea is about the stupidist thing our stupid politicians have promoted. This crap is a very bad idea for many, many reasons. Two steps ahead, three steps back.:(

On CNN I read that the farmers are now going to plant less corn in order to keep prices up. It is now expected for corn to continue to climb in price.

saw an interesting article today on CNN.com about green algae. rapid progress are being made... an acre of algea (in a new vertical clear plastic growth container) can produce 100 000 of oil that can be used for bioD and even Jet fuel... an acre of corn... 30 gallons!

ethanol is a scam, like global warming.

The real reality is we are all living on Easter Island. There are 6.6 billion people and climbing every year. Eventually there will not be enough fresh water or food for everyone and we will have a major population die off. We may have another 20 years, but it is going to get ugly. Got bullets?

My bunker is done. I have my pallet of ammo shrink wrapped. The guns are water proofed and stored. Some food and water stored. Bunks and bedding vacuum packed and ready. The beef is on the hoof and the chickens are in the coop. I'm ready.:D

Studies clearly show that as the economies of countries dramatically improve, birth rates rapidly decline. The best birth reduction tool for India and China will be a great economy. The worst case is in Europe, which is depopulating and is being overrun with immigrants. Italy has few Italians, the some for other similar countries.

My concern is that our major wars over the past 100 years came out of grinding poverty...that is how the Hitlers', Mao's and Lenin's rose to power...from a people totally desparate in poverty. So a good global economy is key to peace. Way off thread here...sorry.

P.s., Al Gore has signed up one of the very top venture capitalists to his "global warming" scam (Tom Harkins? sp?), who is selling his 297' sailing/diesel yacht to raise money to invest. Wouldn't I love that to go bust. Gore has launched a $3M ad campaign promoting a $300M funding, by...drum roll...the US Feds (you and me, and me and you, music please), which he would control...natch!

Poor Al--if he quits his day job he won't be able to afford to be president!

I'll admit I am a cynic. That said, I used to believe you could not trust a politician to make a technical decision because they are not tecnically inclined. Later I changed that to politicians are technically stupid (impaired?). Now, many years later I believe that most of them will only make decisions in favor of what they personally gain from, be it votes or what ever. So lets hug trees and prevent drilling in promising areas. Lets piss away $$ and oil making ethanol which any second year chemistry student can calculate to be a lose lose proposition and will generate more carbon dioxide (because one of the carbons in ethanol is already half oxidized). Let's push hydrogen without a plan to produce it which doesn't make CO2 etc etc. And use our coal?

I better sign off before I get on my Al Gore rant.

"Youre gonna die up there!"

Dont worry, be happy. I just keep plugging away and if I get to enjoy a year outa the yacht so be it. If not... oh well. Its like my ulcer is gonna put a dent in Global Warming or any of that crap. Wait till fuel hits $20 a gallon. Youll have your choice of any number of boats out there.
Filled the Harley up today...only $15.70. Hell. I can come home and suck on the gas pipe for a mere 1-2 therms LOL
The knuckleheads are already shooting each other for shoes here, wait until No Drama obama gets elected... Is that gas pipe 1/2 or 3/4" ? ws

I bin watchin' a secrit deal up in Nort Dakota, no really, this was reported by the WSJ a couple years ago. Someone has been buying up tou'sunds (N. MI speak) of acres of land in SE N. Dakota. The only name that could be linked to any corp. was on a document and the party was a former real estate officer with Marathon Oil in Findlay, OH.

Now drops the shoe.

Oil reserves of between 200-500B Bbl have been discovered in the ND area. This will be reported by the US Geological Survey in a week or so. Marathon has or will be investing about $2B and ND reports that 500 oil well permits are expected in the next year or so. Please note that "directional drilling" will be required, but I thought that was not a big deal these days.

So finally a positive outcome of high oil prices...eureka...oil is found!

Given that the 8.5B Bbl find off of Brazil was considered large and since reported global reserves are about 1.3T Bbl, that makes the ND find on par with the Middle East reserves! 200-500B Bbl is 20-30% of known reserves.

Did I mention that N. Dakota is considered to be within the continental US! This will benefit the balance (imbalance) of trade vis a vis the Middle East and S. America, plus produce jobs. I wonder if any of the Prez candidates will "get it" that this is good. If HC wants a last gasp she should fly up and do a big grandstand about develping this for the US. Naahhh...

Maybe the Arnie Torvold's up there will change their names to Ali...

I think they have known about that North Dakota reserve since the 1950's. It seems that horizontal drilling tecniques are needed to get at it and only now is the price of oil high enough to justify the extra expense of going after it.

They think it is the largest reseve in the world, almost as large as the Saudi reserve was.

Just a word about these rabid environmentalists and the Politicians that pander to them; Not only will these people instill fear in the public, until they gladly give up their personal freedoms and rights,in the name of saving the Earth, but they will finish off the US as a major economic power.

I went to a right-wing tin-foil hat type of presentation once and they made the observation that all the old communist types who had disappeared after the collapse of the USSR had figured out a new way to take control of private property. Yep, environmental law. Doesn't sound so crazy after all.

That "new find" is the Bakken formation actually discovered in the 1950s. Estimates range from 410 billion to 1.2 trillion barrels. Recoverable is between 200 and 500 billion barrels. Land has been bought up in a dizzing pace and the news should be out within 14 days. My brother in law bought 7000 acres in Montana last year. Too bad it was at the other end of the state from where the find was!

Tree huggers were at my door the other night. Wanted me to sign support for a Florida Clean water Bill. Told her that I would only sign something if i could read it, of course they had nothing. I should have asked her who was going to pay for it. Anyhow she had real big boobs so at least it was not a complete waste of time.

I am reminded of a humorous statement made by a Texas oilman back
in the '70s proposing to do 'deep well' drilling through the earth's core and tap
Saudi oil from below. He said, "After all, it ain't exactly *their* oil, they
just happen to live closer to it!"

Energy not boobs guys.
