That "new find" is the Bakken formation actually discovered in the 1950s. Estimates range from 410 billion to 1.2 trillion barrels. Recoverable is between 200 and 500 billion barrels. Land has been bought up in a dizzing pace and the news should be out within 14 days. My brother in law bought 7000 acres in Montana last year. Too bad it was at the other end of the state from where the find was!

Since we have oil patch followers on her, whats up with the multi-state deposits down near TX and OK that require "cracking" (wrong term?) to remove the oil. Understand that is a massive deposit as well, provided the technical issues are surmounted and may already be available.

I meant "fracturing"...

Thats a new one on me! Thought I kept up on this stuff however never heard of that find.

Texas 10 would be about right.

These deposits have been well known for a long time, but they are suspended in sand or similar substrate and will require high temperature fracturing or similar technology to release the oil...I guess I should back, research, and report more accurately.

The US geological report regarding the reserves in the Bakken formation is due out Thurs. Anyone who has any extra cash laying around should find some companys already doing business in N.Dakota or Montana. Understand they are going to take off when its issued. My broker knew nothing about this so I gave him a little homework to do last night!

Marathon?

northern oil & gas, brigham exploration, continental resourses are what I picked up. All three up yesterday however with the oil price going up might be that. All 3 work with Marathon. Just give me a commission if they go up however don't call me if they go down!

I am guessing anyone interested saw the USGS report today, which estimates ~4 Bbl "using today's recovery methods". I don't know in percentage what that is, but the numbers are all over the map, from 1% to 50% accessibility. If someone knows what they used, I would be interested in hearing it. I think Bakken is still pretty exciting, and although horizontal wells are 6x more expensive, they also produce a lot more. Also, USGS only reported US, as opposed to Canadian, reserves.

Were you thinking of Barnett, which is pretty hot right now:

Thanks for the post on the USGS...Bbl estimates are orders of magnitude less than all the wild build up, but as you say, do not include Canadian reserves potential.

Pickering...any relationship to T. Boone Pickens or just coincidence of spelling?

P.s., way off point, but I hear on the sports talks that T. Boone is ponying up mass quantities of money for Oklahoma (State?) universities, esp. basketball and a new football stadium (saw him interviewed about the stadium last year). Trying to lure away Bill Self from Kansas who makes, is it a cool $3M/annum, as it is. Peach baskets have come a long way ...lol.

No noise at all about the Reef Trend across the N. Lower Peninsula MI. Don't if played out or just nicely pumping away. Anyone hear anything...

>>> Finally...maybe the high gas and oil prices are hitting home...I see that at long last there is legislative (federal I think..obviously) movement to allow the two gas pipelines to be considered coming out of Alaska across Canada to the US. Been a logjam due to environmentalists holding ground in the many recent years. Maybe there is an upside to the high prices..

Enough words.

What's wrong with ethanol? I like consuming ethanol. Some of the happiest times of my life have been when I was using ethanol. Plus, it comes in a lot of flavors and protects agains heart disease (moderation advised here, folks). And, it keeps us emergency room doctors busy, which is job security. Ethanol is great stuff.

Do I want to run my car on it? No. Absolutely not. This whole idea of ethanol as an extender for gasoline is ridiculous. So we are going to starve ourselves so we can feed our cars? Idiotic. An idea so stupid it could only have bee dreamed up by someone who was...........(drum roll, please).......

.........drinking ethanol!

Good one Doc! I agree, the peak oilers are as loony as the global warming nutbags. If oil prices stay high, then a ton of alternative processes become viable. Tar sands in Canada alone contain 300 billion barrels of oil, and this process becomes viable when oil stays above $30 per barrel. We can also liquify coal. These alarmist nutbags are talking about what happens 50 years from now. We can tap geothermal energy right under our feet, with wells as shallow as surface where natural fissures bring superheated water to the surface, and as deep as 15,000 feet everywhere else. Iceland already produces 26% of their electricity this way. Burning gas, coal, and oil are far easier and infrastructure costs are lower, but as the price of fuels goes higher , geothermal becomes competitive and the best part is it is non-polluting. Why aren't the greenies harping about pushing this technology? The solar panel crowd ignore the huge amount of energy required to produce their precious panels and batteries. Millions of acres of rain forest have been cleared in South America and Asia to plant grain for ethenol and palms for biodiesel. That little tidbit never gets discussed. You should see the satellite imagery of the burning going on down in Brazil to clear land. You wanna talk about green house gases being released?

The american people are real F'n stupid to buy into this clean energy crap.

Tree huggers were at my door the other night. Wanted me to sign support for a Florida Clean water Bill. Told her that I would only sign something if i could read it, of course they had nothing. I should have asked her who was going to pay for it. Anyhow she had real big boobs so at least it was not a complete waste of time.

They visited me twice, One was a older man who wanted me to sign a petition about global warming. I politely told him I did not believe in it. The other said he was passing a petition to clean up the water. I sent him away too after explaining that I am a boater and I will be the first targeted and dock permits are already hard enough to get.
The water is much clearer now than it was in 1979 when I moved here.
They volunteers mean well and don't realize that they are empowering the wackos.

Don't forget that I still have a limited number of carbon credits for sale. They make great gifts. Only 199.99 ea. Cash preferred.

Global warming is real, it's happening, wont be the first eposide or the last.

The arguement is over how much of it is anthropogenic vs. natural. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, the days of cheap fuel are over and economics will drive a global energy conservation and reduced CO2 emissions.

How much will Climate Change be codified in the US. I give it 2 years before we have European type carbon regulations. Maybe more if McCain gets elected. But plan now for a carbon based ecomomy complete with Cap & Trade, Carbon Tax and of course higher fuel prices.

Me, I thinking of starting a carbon accounting firm and riding this wave into retirement. (Can't beat 'em, then join 'em)

PS: Ethonal fuel is a scam and it will dig us in a deeper hole.

Jim, I guess I don't drink enough of it, but I totally agree about the stupidity of adding that crap to gasoline. That is the dumbest political move this country has made. Well, maybee not the dumbest, as those fools can, and do, make some very stupid decisions eh?:(

"anthropogenic" - Wow! ;)

When about half of the 6.6 billion people die off from starvation, we won't have to worry about global warming anymore, since we will cut co2 emissions by half overnight. We will see serious water shortages and food shortages before Al Gore has to worry about his water front developments getting flooded by melting polar ice. By the way, sea levels have been 100 ft higher than they are today, and were 300 feet lower during the ice age. Our climate goes through cycles influenced by the sun, So I don't see what all the fuss is about. It is nice that all these people are concerned about the future, but I don't ever recall reading where anyone was concerned about our generation having enough of anything. I plan on using whatever I need while I am here on this planet. When Al Gore starts living in an adobe house, and riding a bicycle, then I may start taking some of this stuff more seriously. Until then he can go screw himself.

If you want to see what Al's real agenda is go here and read how he is cashing in on carbon credits he buys from himself and how his stock soared to $35 per share after his movie went public. Now you know the rest of the story. It is sad that the American people are so F'n dumb.

And you know that if Obama puts Gore in a responsible position, Obama is dummer than s---t himself. So he'll proably get elected.

Jim when I am filling my car and smell the ethanol, i think about drinking it. Sure smells good anyhow.

Now a serious Ethanol question. Have an 08 Harley. It runs very lean from the factory. I also changed pipes, breather and a Fuel system MAP download. It still runs Lean. Now will Ethanol Gas make it run too lean?

In Orlando we only have ethanol at RaceTrack stations and Hess. Hess close to home so i typicaly get fuel there but was thinking of not putting it in the bike if it does make it run lean.
