- 58' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1977 - 1980)
After a 2 1/2 year search we closed on the '78 58MY that was in Hilton Head, SC in December. Thanks to everyone who lended their advice, knowledge & opinions in the forums, PM's, and phone calls. These forums are one of the main reasons we were dead set on a Hatteras. We kissed a lot of frogs, traveled a good bit by air and land, learning a lot along the way. There is so much to appreciate in the various models and configurations, it was hard to decide on a particular model. Eventually the 4 stateroom galley up won out over a cockpit. We decided it was best to stay with the 15' 10" beam since the well is under 18' 5" wide where we will have to haul out for the winter. I've been meaning to post earlier about it, but I am estranged from the boat until probably April. Being a thousand & some odd miles away is killing me right now, so to keep my sanity I have had to put it out of mind to a certain extent, relying on a vessel management service until I can start her home.
She's a little rough in spots but she's got good bones, we will get many years of enjoyment out of her once she's home. Right now she's on the hard in Savannah, Ga. getting new trim tabs, rudders packed, cutlass bearings, 3 new fairing blocks, seacocks exercised and serviced, and bottom paint. Then it'll get splashed and a complete rebuild on the Starboard engine after we discovered a cracked liner during the survey. We'll complete the rest of what she needs, then start the long journey home, all the way up the Mississippi to Dubuque, Iowa. I'll probably start a new thread once we begin our trip, but any advice or suggestions anyone has now will be much appreciated. Best fuel spots, overnights, or places to slip for a few weeks along the way as we may end up making the trip in several stints, depending on how we make out at the yard. We couldn't have found one much further from home, but we really liked the boat and the price fit our budget. I'll work on posting some pics once we reunite. Once again, thanks to everyone for all the help, I'm sure I'll be asking a bunch of questions once I get to start wrenching on it myself.
