  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1977 - 1980)
After a 2 1/2 year search we closed on the '78 58MY that was in Hilton Head, SC in December. Thanks to everyone who lended their advice, knowledge & opinions in the forums, PM's, and phone calls. These forums are one of the main reasons we were dead set on a Hatteras. We kissed a lot of frogs, traveled a good bit by air and land, learning a lot along the way. There is so much to appreciate in the various models and configurations, it was hard to decide on a particular model. Eventually the 4 stateroom galley up won out over a cockpit. We decided it was best to stay with the 15' 10" beam since the well is under 18' 5" wide where we will have to haul out for the winter. I've been meaning to post earlier about it, but I am estranged from the boat until probably April. Being a thousand & some odd miles away is killing me right now, so to keep my sanity I have had to put it out of mind to a certain extent, relying on a vessel management service until I can start her home.

She's a little rough in spots but she's got good bones, we will get many years of enjoyment out of her once she's home. Right now she's on the hard in Savannah, Ga. getting new trim tabs, rudders packed, cutlass bearings, 3 new fairing blocks, seacocks exercised and serviced, and bottom paint. Then it'll get splashed and a complete rebuild on the Starboard engine after we discovered a cracked liner during the survey. We'll complete the rest of what she needs, then start the long journey home, all the way up the Mississippi to Dubuque, Iowa. I'll probably start a new thread once we begin our trip, but any advice or suggestions anyone has now will be much appreciated. Best fuel spots, overnights, or places to slip for a few weeks along the way as we may end up making the trip in several stints, depending on how we make out at the yard. We couldn't have found one much further from home, but we really liked the boat and the price fit our budget. I'll work on posting some pics once we reunite. Once again, thanks to everyone for all the help, I'm sure I'll be asking a bunch of questions once I get to start wrenching on it myself.

Randy

Congratulations and welcome to the Hatteras family. You will love your new MY. Reach out anytime for advice. There are many many experts that can guide you thru the fix. One thing I was told when I first bought mine over two years ago that, and I will pass on to new owners. NEVER THROW ANYTHING AWAY. You will regret it sometime down the road. If you don't know what t is or where it goes. Keep it! Have fun. Post the photos once she is yours.

It's about time you went public. :D

As you know, I've done all that trip and will be happy to help in any way I can. No doubt the most "interesting" parts (as in no marinas and no fuel) of the trip are between Dog River Marina (Mobile) and Bobby's Fish Camp (Bumphuct) on the Tenn-Tom and Green Turtle Bay (Lake Barkley, KY) and the luxurious Hoppie's just south of Saint Louis. Precious few anchorages in between and zero fuel. Fuel won't be an issue with your capacity. The rest of the trip is easy where marinas and fuel are concerned.

Two Randy's on a 58' Hatt could be historic. :D

Thanks Randy. I may still be taking you up on your offer for the trip back. We'll hopefully be able to get down there for a couple of shakedown cruises maybe first part of April then see what's left to do before the big trip. Plus I'll have to see how empty my wallet is after all the yard work & the rebuild.😓 Two Randy's on a 58, that could be an interesting trip!! Although I'm doing my damdest to have 2 good running engines. I might take all the excitement out of the trip 😀

Congrats! Another boat saga begins, enjoy it!

Congratulations, enjoy the journey and all the wonderful memories you will make.

Egads, a possible another "Gilligan Island" trip if Randy is involved...... Or maybe a Capt Ron movie... But all know it will NOT be dull!!

That's Charlie's way of saying his feelings will be hurt if we/I/you don't stop by to say hello and/or share details of the trip as it unfolds. OTHER people in boats coming to HIS dock is the only way he ever gets to meet anybody. I've tried to untie those knots he made on his cleats and dock, and he's too cheap to cut a line. Reading about others making fun trips is good therapy for him...

:p

That's one of the reasons I started this thread ;). Looking for members who i/we can stop and meet up with along the way, maybe a dock to overnight at or good places for fuel, or better yet contact info for fuel trucks. I have a few months to gather info. Be nice to put a face to a name for the good folks posting all this great info. For sure yours.. ;) Only trouble is I won't be having a whole lot of time to be lollygagging along. Damn work.....What an inconvenience to what should be a nice long liesurely trip with so much to see along the way.

I too am moving a boat that is new to me around the state of Florid, and meeting Hatt owners, especially Randy (Freebird) is a blast. I can do all I can here in Daytona Beach if you stop here. I have some good mechanics that work for me, and can assist if you have any mechanical issues. Hopefully no issues, and a meet and greet would be fun.

Keep my number, I will treat you to dinner if you stop over.

Good Luck,
Tim

Thanks Tim, I sure will keep your number. We're hoping to have her mechanically sound before we leave, but no matter how prepared you think you are, something always comes up. Hopefully we'll be able to meet a bunch of members along the way. If we don't end up making some of the trip with Randy, we for sure gotta figure a way to meet up somewhere. Can't go all that way Birdless! ;)

Well, I can't tell you how many of these fine folks I've met in person (I've lost count), or how many have gone out of their way to help me out when I'm passing through on my own boat or somebody else's. I didn't have any ulterior motives when I joined this forum, but there is hardly a stretch of water I've run on where I didn't know at least one HOF member. That's not only a good comradery thing where lots of folks will come have a drink or a meal with you, but if you have problems and call them, they will tell you where to go. Yes, you can take that two different ways. :D

Seriously, this is the best group of bigger boat owners on the planet. I'm proud to be a part of it.

Pretty funny how that worked out for us to meet. Anytime I'm out and about and run across a vintage Hatt, I'll strike up a conversation with the owner (if they're outside doing something) and see if they're a part of this place. I've recruited a few over the years, and I've yet to get a commission check from Doug! :D

That really is one of the main reasons we decided on a Hatt. I've spent a lot of time on this forum since I was first told about it, & I've already learned a bunch & gotten more than a few chuckles. Besides a great trip we won't forget, I hope I'll get a chance to meet as many members as possible along the way
