im having a hell of a time finding a matching teak veneer for finishing off my window repairs on the 43dc . qtr cut , about 3ft x 2ft piece needed . ideas?

boutler plywood will take pictures of the product you ask for and email so you can see the grain/color. they are in mass. I think sorry. I don't have the add. at hand.be sure you have teak not afromosia

Darron, I think my cabinet guy has some on hand. Give me a call and I'll give you his #.

It looks like the OP has a 1973. Hatteras switched from the "Mozambique Teak" to the Afromosia in about 1980 because the Mozambique (feather teak) was becoming so scarce.

You will have a hard time matching that veneer. It is almost impossible to find. Your best bet is to just go with a teak veneer and match the color.

heres a pic..

That looks a lot like my 12/65 build MY's interior. I have always heard this is called Philippine ribbon mahogany. I'll try to check with my wood sources.

Darren, I have a cut piece of afromosia veneer plywood. If you think that will match, you are welcome to a piece the size you need. I think it is 5 or 6 mm thick.

thanks Jim, but ive got water staining and I would have to cut out the areas, thats why im looking for the veneer. theres some on ebay now that looks pretty close ,I might try again.

The pic looks just like the afromisa in our 43. I purchased veneer from SAMs which matched very well,
Regards

It's not the same. I have seen a repair done on a 1978 using the afromosia veneer and it did not even come close to matching the original. The color was right, but the grain was way off and it looked out of place.

Seafarermarine.com in Fort Lauderdale have afromosia veneer. My 1976 LRC uses mozambique and afomosia mixed even in the salon. But that may have been a repair. And it does not match. The grain is cut differently.

Exotic Lumber in Annapolis has some veneer; maybe you could bring a piece of trim from your boat over to them and see if they can match it up. They are in the Whitehall area, within sight of 50. South side. Nice folks and very knowledgeable.

Just finished replacing all veneer in the salon and galley of our 1981 48MY. Also built tv cabinets and currently building a built in sectional. I have 8-10 sheets of quarter sawn teak veneer that matched our original veneer very well. I would be happy to send you a sample or a 2x3 piece.

Also, I am in the furniture manufacturing business and have made tooling for many old the moldings I have needed to complete our restoration. I'm happy to help others in their restoration efforts if possible.

In my '77 43DC I believe that I have Afromosia, but no one a I have spoken to, including Hatteras and Sam's, can give me a timeframe for the changeover. My boat has both quartersawn veneer, which produces the long straight grain, and flatsawn, which produces the chevron grain. Some walls have both, which causes me to stop and ask, were they even paying attention when they put it together, or did they just grab the next piece in the rack. Obviously, the latter.

There are a handful of places in Ft.Lauderdale where one can get veneers, including Afromosia at reasonable prices. All that I have seen are quartersawn. I have bought several sheets and I can tell you that it is not a good match (grain wise) for the quartersawn veneer in my boat, much less the flatsawn. Getting the stain right is the most important and the most difficult. I have tried all kinds of combinations and don't have a satisfactory (to my eye) solution.
I also had water stains around my salon windows and outright rot below the portlights in the master cabin. My solution was to completely replace the side and rear walls of the master cabin, and to cover the windowed walls in the salon with a cream colored upholstery material. It lightens the room up and doesn't give it quite so much of a mausoleum look. I am pleased with the way it looks and have gotten a lot of compliments on it.

For the most part, this is all behind me now, but I still give it a lot of thought, and I think that if I were going to do it again, I would have the veneer applied to a pressed paper backing similar to Formica and others, and would then have it prefinished. Then I would just cut to size with a razor knife, like Formica, and then glue it to the existing wall. Add trim and you're done.

thanks, pm'd you

I thought about painting it but feel this is not to that point . and once It is done Im planning on getting cordless pleated shades so those white blocks will lighten up the interior in addition to the 4ft skylight over the galley I made ( which is awesome light in the salon )
