Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
Spent this morning pulling the aftercoolers out from my Cummins diesels. Tomorrow they go down to T&S in Crisfield for cleaning and new O-rings etc. It's been a few years, hope they can get them apart .

Also going to try to flush the HEs with them still on the engines; these are two-pass units so I may just be able to hook up two hoses at one end and flush just the HE. I hope so. I'm not trying to make any bigger mess than I absolutely need to....

Any reason you aren't pulling the caps on the heat exchanges and cleaning?

I popped the cap off one aftercooler, just for look before I yank it off....it was spotless (hehehe freshwater!)

I acid flush my cummins, aftercoolers as well, annually then every three years pull the aftercoolers to get the air side done. I know it's frowned on to acid flush through the aftercooler housing but if the o rings have failed engine will be trashed anyway I figure.
I used to rod out the HE's but acid just makes a perfect job.

JIM, IS IT YOU WHO DITCHED THE ENGINE ZINCS?

Also I have a plate and studs that I use to force the cores out with. Really would not trust anybody else to do it.

What performance do you get on your 42c? Do you have the Diamond 430 with denso injection pumps?

If you maintain the after-coolers you should not need plates and studs to get them out. Small tap with a block of wood and they fall out after 3 years in Salt water.

Jim don't forget about the transmission cooler!

Do you use the special grease from Tony Athens or other type of anti-sieze?

I use the grease from Tony since I get gaskets, Impellers, Filters etc I just add that in.
You should do your now before any use in Salt its easy just a few hrs to clean it all and R.R

Mine's already half apart. Also, I'm getting 2 complete spares (a few hours) for a song to toss on the shelf. Actually, I'll just rebuild them and bolt them on. While the aftercooler is off, I'm going to yank the intake heater wiring and system to clean up the wiring mess. Also remove the fuel cooler.

15+ years in fresh water, not bad (it was better looking once it dried off)

Yes, I am going to do the transmission coolers, too. Actually, the hookup is easier if you include the trans coolers, because then you don't have to remove that hose that corkscrews down at the back of the engine. Plus there's a repair to the water feed line to the PSS seal that I have to get done, too.

Interesting hour or two at T&S- I didn't realize they ship engines all over the country, including ones they've rebuilt. There was one today going to Missouri. Nice guys, I have known them now since the 80s.

I might pull the caps. I had them off year before last, I think it was. Depends on how energetic I'm feeling.

Yes it's got the Denso pumps. It did easily do 25kts+ but I had the cup taken out the props to let them spin easier so now down to 23. It does get up on plane instantly with no need, or time, for trim. I've used it quite a bit now and like the engines and boat. Also got rid of the heater start coils and made no difference at all to starting. And use the PTFE or Teflon gunk, whatever it is, for the O rings and housing.

34Hatt, have you got the 8.3's in a 34 footer?

No the 5.9 330B are just right :D

Same engine as Jim never said anything about 8.3 ?

I have 8.3 with denso pumps. Boat is new to me, so I haven't had much time behind the wheel to fully learn all the behavior, but it was right at 29-30knots WOT. Nice easy cruise anywhere from 18-24knots.

incidental finding while cleaning aftercoolers

I thought I had a thread about this, but evidently not...

I pulled the aftercoolers from my Cummins engines to get them cleaned. While doing that, we noticed that the spigots screwed into the gear oil coolers, that send water to the PSS shaft seals, were broken off. They are brass.

First idea was to try to get the remainder out with an Easy Out. I have soaked them in Blaster and will make an attempt to do this, but I'm not going to try very hard. If they don't unscrew easily (and I don't think they will) I'll remove them and take them to T&S Marine and ask them to do it when I go down to pick up the aftercoolers.

Obviously the brass fittings either weren't bonded (although I thought they were connected through the mounts) or the wrong material- or both. In any case, the replacement fittings, since bronze fittings in this size don't seem to exist, will be 316L SS.

I was lucky on this one. If they had broken while the boat was running, it would have made a hell of a mess.

Re: incidental finding while cleaning aftercoolers

Would brass into something else as galvanic corrosion? Or were these on the coolers as opposed to the shaft seals.

Re: incidental finding while cleaning aftercoolers

Ya got me, Jay, guilty as charged. Now I have to figure out how to merge them. LOL
