What's with all the SPAM on the site now? I was dumb and clicked on one and now I have some program running that I have to find and delete. I also found some last week. Can we flag these?
Dave

Yep, the new system hasn't been tuned in to catch all the spam yet. Nice seeing this morning, by the way. Oh, please return the handicap sign, too.

Here is a good web site that has a free program that detects and destroys most spyware. I've been running it for years with excellent results... AND it's free. They do like donations however. The program is written and updated by a world wide network of volunteers.

www.spybot.com

Another good one is the free version of AVG by Grisoft found here:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

I'm sure there are others but this is what I have used with good results.

AVG is a good anti-VIRUS program - Spybot is COMPLIMENTARY to it, not a replacement or substitute.

Spybot also has a couple of "protective" modules you can load - the browser one is quite important and will kill most stupid stuff before it can get IN the computer.

The other one - teatimer - prevents unannounced registry changes. It can be a pain when you're loading new software, but it will stop most nasties that try to stick things in the registry dead.

OK - I just made some changes to the software to help prevent the bogus spam user registrations and hopefully slow down the spam posts. Let's see if it helps any. I probably can't stop all of the automated bots that do this but maybe I can slow them down. I still have a few more things I can try if this doesn't work.

I too clicked on one of the "spam" websites. One was tough to get out of but to my knowledge nothing has been "planted". I ran Spybot and Ad-Aware right afterwards and everything seemed to be clean. Since utilizing Mozilla Foxfire as my main browser we have had dramatically less spam problems than before.

we've all been deleted a ton of spam lately, they dont' stay up for long.

they're easy to spot so most liekly you're not going to be tempted to open the post and if you do, there is no way it can launch anything unless you click on one their links...

Karl,

Thanks for the clarification. I've been running both for years knowing that but didn't think to say it. I'm no guru just user. Will Teatimer run in place of AVG and Sypbot or as a compliment?

dont' you hate to pay for a service and not get your money's worth ?

Sounds like you may have to raise membership dues again.................

Well I know Its free and you work for free But we did offer up back a few years ago to Doug.
Also I figured you had seen it since you did over 10 posts while it was still there. I guess I was wrong sorry for bringing it to your attention next time I will wait!

Yeah, you might want to since he told the board that it was annoying when we alerted spam posts.

Rick

I hope I didnt do some thing wrong when I pushed the alert button the ohter day when some body put up child pronography stuff and then there was some thing about that Paris Hilton girl which I thought maybe was okay when it stayed up but I never looked at it because I think she is a spoiled rich kid who should have stayed in jail then I thought it might be okay maybe her father has a hatteras.

my point was that in most cases, either Jim, Doug, Karl or myself sqaush spam within minutes or at the most a couple of hours. chances are one of us will be here before the email alert comes in, which is why i dont' think it's really helpful to click the report post link...but that's jsut my opinion...

well, I guess we're only human and one may make it thru... in that case, by all means report it or PM us.

I agree with Sparks. The child porn post made my blood boil and for some reasons it did not get zapped for a long time.

OK - I have added another option to the forum that hopefully will reduce the amount of spam. I've added a plug-in hack to the software that will not allow members to include URL links in their posts until they have made a minimum of 15 posts. In most cases, the automated spammers only make one or two posts under the spam account they registered with.

Let's see if this helps!

How about removing those offending "members" from the forum so they can't come back? I see there are a ton of them in the Members List. Is it possible to ban registry of such member names like "Buy Viagra!" or any other member name with certain words in it like porn, sex, Brittany Spears, xxx, etc. We all know those kind of member names are spamers.

doug

angela makes a good point, is there an easier way to delete/ban spammers?

the current process of having to login in to the admin page, then paste in the user name, is a pain... would be nice to have an instant ban button on the post itself...

eventhough those bots only post one or two post and dont' come back, we need an easy way to get them off the user directory.
