O.K. help me fill out a list of things that we can send the boy's in Washington to try to explain the position of the small businessman.

1. Workers Compensation Tax
2. Unemployement Tax
3. Property Tax
4. Tangible property Tax
5. OSHA
6. Minimum wage
7. EPA
8. Department of Labor
9. Social security Tax
10. Sales Tax

It seems that most if not all of these were not in place when the great depression hit. And the small businessman had an opportunity to work through it.

With all of these burdens it is very difficult to see the small businessman in America just cranking up and saving this country.

I hope you don't really believe they want the small business to thrive. Our economy is being pushed towards the "company store" mentality where most of the people will be buying from walfart and other major retailers at a discount in price and quality but will have no choice. With large corporations getting tax breaks to take good jobs and turn them into minimum wage jobs and the lack of any oversight they will be the new robber barons of our age.

Add (for me):

CPSA (Consumer Product Safety Act)
Prop 65
Sabanes Oxley
The threat/impending county, city & state sales tax issue
The pending healthcare regulatory changes
Individual State/Federal Income Tax (since I'm a Sub S)
Plus all of the regulatory requirements of my clients (hundreds/thousands)

Thanks for bringing these to my attention. While I love the freedom of owning my business, sometimes I'd rather just be in sales and not have to deal with the headaches.

Income Tax how could I miss that. It will be number one. I believe when Regan left office the high end rate was 29% now its 42% a 30% increase that really hurts as well.

I'm going to keep changing the top post to be inclusive of all the Burdens since that have been added since the great depression and then make sure everyone in W gets a copy!

My parents always ask why my wife and I have to work all the time........TAX!!!

Gas tax, hurts with the salesmen and is a killer on delivery. Gas tax for state of N.C. is now .35 per gallon let alont the fed which brings it to over .50 per gallon

They just re-affirmed the $6. curly screw (U) light bulb to replace the 69 cent one. Oh goodie. May as well be a tax.

Problem is we have gov spending that is out of control. We've been fighting 2 wars for over 10 years and no one seemed to wory about how we pay for it. Now we have an insane increase in gov spending on top of that. Couple that with a poor economy that crushed high income jobs and you can see why gov is going after every dollar thaey can get. We'll be paying for this for decades.

Yes the Tax on Fuel at the pump is very hurtful. I wonder how much the fuel is taxed before we get a chance to buy it.

So:

add:

Federal Fuel Tax
State Fuel Tax

Isn't there also some extra taxes on tires?

And does anybody know the exact dates all these taxes kicked in, I'm going for a healine news Article in the WSJ.

It would be cool to see a 20 item list of all the different Taxes and the dates starting from 1938.

What they don't relize is that we have our hands tied and cannot get back in the fight even if we want to try. And it is also very demoralizing. I believe the small businessman is the most optimistic guy in America but to view a fight you cannot win is just demoralizing.

They have to give us room to move! Remove these burdens and get out of our way at least. They can give Afganistan billions, Egypt billions and the small businessman in America not help, not any kind of financial assistance but a bill. They give us a bill while they are giving money to all these other nations, what moron figured that one out?

Here's a link to income tax rates. The current marginal rate for the top is 35%. Back when the country was running surpluses 12 years ago, the marginal rate was 39.5%. The so-called "Bush tax cuts" to the current level did not prevent us having a bubble economy and a severe recession. The Reagan rates fared no better. Loved the memories of the 50's? Take a look at those rates!

And as the OP noted, before we had the litany of socialist burdens, we still had a Great Depression.

American capitalism is still the greatest system for individual economic opportunity, and has overcome all sorts of regulatory and taxation issues, but it comes with an inevitable economic business cycle. Don't let this blatant pandering to their constituencies by both political parties throw you off.

Have the democrates controlled the senate for 4 1/2 years now with a democrat President for 2 1/2?

If so all I can say is this is the worst econmics conditions since Jimmy Carter and possible since the depression.

George if your saying that Taxing businessmen has no effect on business and therefore we should not change then I do not agree nor would any of my colleagues.

What we need to do is get them to understand that Taxing us more is not the answer, has never been the answer. They need to get the people that are not paying their fair share to pay Taxes and leave us alone. We are carrying the load. Giving hand outs to every Tom, Dick and Harry plus any nation that asks for it does not work. Then they go on a witch hunt to find money from the American small businessman.

All I want to do is show them that they are like a boa constrictor around the small businessmans neck and each year overall it just gets worse.

Just think when all the small businesses finally say O.K. I'm done and go on social security or unemployment. Then what? They are on the threshold of making it so unprofitable, so unpopular, so much a pain in the ass that no one is going to want to be a small businessman in America.

Anyway back to the topic of what increase have they burdened us with since 1938 less I digress.

SAS70 Type II (service business annual audit as a result of Sarbanes Oxley)

Income tax based on profit by GAAP rules. (means small business may have less than no cash but a huge tax bill. Our government doesn't play by GAAP rules. They write their own accounting rules.

Frivolous Lawsuits and fee shifting laws specifically designed to encourage frivolous lawsuits.

Revolving door of Federal and State workers going to private business and back and forth to wield their power and influence for the benefit of themselves, friends and family.

Political giveaways in return for votes. Resulting in far more people receiving gifts from the Federal government than those paying in.

Our country is doomed ... it's just a matter of time. I'm adding RED to my wardrobe.

I wonder if there is a site that shows the amount spent on the socialist programs too?

Had an employee that worked for us for 90 days we had all the paperwork correct did everything right it cost us 15k to sorta win. It was pure BS allowed by our governmental rules. Frivilous Law Suit how do we state that and what is the legal fix. Maybe: simply do not allow any employee to sure any employer for any reason other that the EEOC. Yeah I like it.

Also dept of labor contended we owed a guy time and 1/2 for every hour he worked. They showed me the paragraph. It actually kinda implied that only if you put a comma in the sentence where there wasn't one and read it that way. More BS. Let's see Everyone gets paid 5 dollars an hour minimum and then gets 7.5 doallars an hour after 40 hours total hours are determined by statring Sunday at 12:02AM through Sunday at 12:01AM. Unless your state does not have a minimum wage.

Both guys were totally deadbeats living off the system paying no taxes only sucking up any free money and not working

Wow, that was a great read and exactly what I see happening and almost every businessman I know is seeing the same thing.

Washington has to "EAT ITS PEAS" and get their hands out of our pockets and make the deadbeats work. They must reduce the budget and reduce taxes now!

Thanks Dennis

What we need to do is drastically cut spending and get more people off gov support. Let them become self sufficient tax payees like the rest of us. I don't have a problem with gov aid helping someone when they're down. I have a problem with it becoming a lifestyle.

But then who would vote for the democrats?

Break two simultaneously and you now quality as a hazardous waste that requires a hazmat team for cleanup...true. As they say, just don't tell anyone.

Also the Germans have studies that show a chemical cloud is generated by the curly bulb and pregnant women are recommended to avoid reading or other quiet activity near one or more such bulbs...sigh...

"Washington has to "EAT ITS PEAS"

I couldn't believe I heard him make that statement.
Your spot on about small busines.

Here's a good read. I'm new here so I can't post links yet.
