  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I have two problems should anyone care to advise me on.
While cleaning the bilge I apparently noticed the Judson Synchronizer attached to the flywheel of one engine was loose. In an effort to tighten it it came off the place where it was screwed into the engine. This deal has a red rubber cap on the top of it and a green wire attached to the outside which could be a ground. It has two red wires going into the top of it covered by this red rubber cap. These wires originate from a wiring harness. This deal I broke off had a gear on a pin in it which fell out and the remaining piece still attached to the engine has a gear in it too. Apparently when this deal was in place these worked together and sent a response to the head unit which does not work now nor either of my upper and lower station tachometers. Real bitch.

Is this broken piece the problem. Maybe if I connect the two red wires attached to the top of the broken piece this will make the tacks work?

advise please.

Other problem is sanitation hoses need replaced from Y valve in rear of the hull to the holding tank up forward.

I can turn this Y valve off to send waste to holding tank or open it to direct discharge if and when legal. The boat manual indicates there is another Y valve up front near the holding tank, however I do not see it.

Should there be one? Seems unnecessary having the other Y valve. When closed to thru hull waste goes into tank. Open thru hull valve waste goes OB and could go to holding tank. If valve open to thru hull would waste in the holding tank go OB too?

Questions about missing Y valve assistance please.

I am going off-shore and requesting explanation. Would prefer not to sink the boat.

Love to help ya out but no Y valves on the st marie. Heads both go into the holding tank. I can pump the tank overboard with my pump our use the pump out port. Bill

I suspect the aft head may have originally discharged overboard, later being plumbed to the holding tank. What about your forward head? Does it have a "Y"valve too? Check the discharge line. Otherwise, there may be a "y" valve in the pump-out hose between your holding tank and your deck fitting.
Will

Well, I know my boat did not originally have holding tank, it was added later. The Y valve for the forward head was added to front b-berth in rather tricky area (maybe to hide from Coast Guard?). Their is a knee high seat where v-berth bunks meet. Remove the cushion and open hatch. On the floor of storage space there is another hatch, open that one and that's where my Y valve is. If you follow the hose from discharge thru-hull will probably take you to it.

My original book also said no holding tank. I think what they meant is it wasn't plumbed. Every 43 I know of has three large tanks in the keel. On my boat the middle is the water tank. I conected the foward one for the holding tank aft is unused. Bill

Looks like my '76 only had two tanks, water tank where you described and one unused between engines. The forward holding tank is white polyproplyne type of later vintage directly under galley floor and not installed to Hatteras standards. Interesting to know there may have been an original tank in its place.

Theres a hatch in the foward cabin right in the door way. Lift the hatch if you have a brass plate with a couple plugs in it thats it. I doubt if hatt made any 43's without them it's probally part of how the hull was built. I thought I didn't have them until somone posted a picture of the plate and I realized despite what my book said I had them. Bill

My 43 is different. 1 holding tank in ER bildge aft of the water tank with 1 Y valve outboard and aft of the starboard engine and 1 Y valve in the forward bildge accessed thru a hatch in the forward stateroom doorway. I believe holding tank about 120 gallons and water tank about 120 gallons with no second holding tank. Retrofitted with vacuflush bypassing both Y valves and plumbed to the single holding tank with independant vacuum tanks and pumps. So far its been a nice set-up once I replaced the suction tube and pressure switch and tube so 3/4 full indicator lights work properly.
