  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I never liked the vinyl headliners on my 73 43DC. Reminded me of the headliner of a 1964 Impala. They were in good shape though, so they were tolerated.

My 79 53MY has the same headliners. They are not in as good condition in some areas, especially along the edges in some places.

I know that some boats have wooden overheads made up from 3/8" x 2" beadboards with rounded edges.

I have the woodworking equipment to fabricate all of these little boards. Would make a glorious amount of sawdust cutting them from 8/4 stock.

My thought is to do a test case on the overhead of one of the heads. Very small area. If it comes out badly, a square yard of headliner, some staples and we are back where we started.

Would do heads in mahogany since everything else in those spaces is white. All other spaces would be done in poplar painted with white oilbased semi-gloss. All lighting would be replaced with recessed LED.

Has anyone done this?

I look forward to your input.

I will post photos of this project as it unfolds.

I will be watching this very closely. I have this on my list as well. Love the look. In case you didn't see it, the Jan 2014 issue of Yachting Mag features the 77 Vicem, which has these headliners in the salon and the master. Absolutely gorgeous, particularly with the mahogany or teak cross slats. If you haven't seen it, its great inspiration. I was going to offer to post pics from the article for you, but there are great ones on Vicem's website. Good luck and post lots of pics. Smart move starting in the head, the mahogany against all that white will be great.

Forgot to mention, I will do mahogany cross strips. Three in the main salon. If we decide to progress that far.

Sounds like a great project. Please post pics as you go. I'd like to try it as well, since my headliner is getting a bit worn.

I kinda liked the headliner on a friend's 64 Impala. Or maybe I just liked the 409 (she was real fine!).

Sounds like an interesting project - but as Sky is found of saying, if there are no pictures, it didn't happen! :)

Just ny observation but the wood headliners or even wood strips draw your eye to the overhead and make it seem lower than it already is.

I used the FRP sheets from home depot, almond color. Admiral is very happy.
Used screws at every staple furring strip. Did need to sissy the strip in a few places to get the needed room for two complete sheets side by side.IMG_20140602_174326_041.webpIMG_20140602_174301_647.webp
