Not looking too promising. Talked to a SAR pilot this am that searched 600sq mi on Sunday said when they found the boat it was pretty much over. Sad story but maybe some lessons will be learned.

Huge difference between being in a boat and being in the water.
The point was, the odds were against these two surviving, and they did.

We'd all like to believe in miracles, but immersion vs being on a boat is a huge game changer.

True, but not so much when hypothermia isn't part of the equation. This of course if they are wearing PFD's. No doubt the odds are totally against finding them alive, but there is still hope... at least for a few more days.

I'm sure many are praying for their safe return. I would like nothing better than that as the outcome here but exposure, dehydration, hypothermia and drowning are real possibilities.

In a perfect world this would never have happened.

I'm sure the families are devestated. It's terrible to loose a child. Remember that all the responders are risking their lives too. Say a prayer for their safety and offer them thanks for their service.

So, we're going to make this a technical thread now?

If there was ever a thread on this forum that doesn't need anything more than hope and prayer, this is it.

Saw where CG Miami is making a statement at noon. Got a feeling it's not going to be welcome news.

I have little doubt that it will be more than announcing they are ending the search. It would appear the family is very well funded, and there are lots of private individuals involved in their search. Just a very sad situation all around.

They're suspending the search. Pretty sad for the families.

While I am far from a big gov supporter, it is probably time for EPIRB/PLBs to become mandatory for vessels traveling in federal waters.

Agreed. It would save lives and also save tons of money where SAR efforts are concerned. If those boys weren't wearing PFD's, they probably didn't make it past the first day. Makes me sick to think of what they had to deal with during the final hours of their lives as well as what their families will have to endure for the rest of theirs. Maybe we'll still see a miracle.

Spoken like a truly politician. How would having epirbs and plbs help if the kids don't use them. It's unenforceable and just adds to the cost of boating. You can't force people to follow simple safety procedures so you want to make it a legal requirement. So far the law has stopped drug use and drunk driving right?

Apples and oranges.

Wait until you catch Ryan without a life jacket. Or on a bike without a helmet. We can do our best to teach our kids safety and responsibility but we can't be with them all the time to enforce it.

I've been aboard at least 5 vessels with unregistered epirbs and no one aboard that understands how to deploy them.

The fishing tournements I used to work required them for the king fish boats and some were found without them on inspection. You can lead a horse to drink but you can't make him water.

Making PLB's or EPIRB's mandatory will at least put them on the boat. It would be a start, and like unworn PFD's, they could still save lives.

Sam has a mandatory safety list and being river bound is part of it. He is NOT allowed to go through the locks on his boat. Has he ever don't that. No. Because he knows I'll take the boat away forever. Other kids ( his friends) do not have the strict rules he does. It's the parents responsibility to make and enforce the rules for our kids. Just like it's our choice to ride motorcycles with or without a helmet. I choose to wear one. Others dont.

If the parents don't insist on safety why should it be government enforced.

Under no circumstances do we need to empower the government to rule over us any more than they do. No mandatory anything from them please.

I pull up to a light I have 11 air bags a roll cage safety belt, shoulder harness and safety glass. The biker dude pulls up next to me in shorts, no shirt, flip flops, no helmet, no air bag, no roll cage, and some no windshield. Hmmmmm leave the government out of our lives!!!!!!!

If you choose certain things great if not you risk your butt. It is your butt. Now if it is someone elses because your an idiot then you are liable.

Very sad for the families, my son went out of Savannah on a search yesterday saw the CG plane fly overhead.
