It is with sadness that I enter 2014 without my best friend Elmo (Peekapoo). He was there for over 15 years and was the perfect boat dog who loved to travel. My fondest memories are of him laying on the front deck in the sun and then running back wanting a snack. Yes, I love my wife of 36 years, but I'll miss my little buddy. He really left paw prints on my heart.

My heart goes out to you. I usually like dogs better than people. My best friend is am 11 year old golden retriever. Id be lost without him.

Hi All,

Art, I can't even imagine what you're feeling. So sorry to hear about your little buddy.

I have an 8 year old Cairn Terrier and I freak when I think about losing her someday.

Remember, Elmo had a spirit and has been taken into love.

They really do become a member of the family. Sorry for the loss of your friend.

I've seen a lot of friends go through this and watching their pain is probably the main reason I don't have a pet.

Yes, but it's still worth it. Because while they're alive nothing equals the love they give you. Humans and dogs were made to be together. My collie died in the eighties. I still miss her and think about her. Maybe one day when I retire I will have another dog. I hope so.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Dogs are indeed mans best friend, and losing one is painful. Me sympathies go out to you.

Art,
I am so sorry to hear the loss of Elmo. We went through the loss of our yorkie in May and it is a terrible loss. Remember all the good times and Elmo will always be there. I honestly believe that we will be reunited with our best friends later on.

Sincerely,
Dave and Linda

We lost 'Peanut', a goofy mix mutt of 60lbs in 2003... And it's amazing how many times since then to this day I've seen him on the bow of the boat when I'm walking down the dock .....

Sorry for your loss. We had to put our 13 yr old Lab down because his hips lost function (totally). He couldnt walk, or poop, etc. so the vet said quality of life is zero. I agreed. It was real hard to put him down. We still miss him after 4 years. I dont think we will get another dog. Its crazy how much we were attached to a dog. Be thankful for the memories and press on.

Hi All,

Jim is SO spot on here.

However, I think if we lost Bella, (and it's so hard to even write those words), we would certainly bring another Cairn into our life. Pure love, pure joy, true companion, heart of a lion, fierce protector, and so funny. They add so much quality to our lives. And they are great boaters too. I've got her trained to put the boat in the slip on the first try, really.

My best friend next in line to my wife. Doing what she does best.

Thanks for all the kind words. Our doggy companions only adds to the joy of boating. I don't know if I could ever find another Elmo or if I want to try. It may be easier to get rid of the boat

I said the same words. The Westie I had before the the one pictured lived to 17 years 6 months.I thought the same. Never going to replace the one that passed. This one has a whole different personality. Called her by the others name for the first few months. A new friend and takes some of the hurt away with the new companion. Go get another, you will be glad you did.

so sorry to hear of your loss..they truly are mans best friend, had to put a couple down in the past.. i will be a complete mess when the 3 that we have now pass, i'm way to close to them

After losing my dear friend of 15 years Elmo, I said I would not get another dog. It didn't last long and now I have a new boating companion. Baxter is a YorkiePoo and at 16 weeks, has settled in & loves exploring the boat and enjoys sitting beside me while underway.

Good move. Something about dog lovers that always gets a new friend. What's the old story about pure love. Lock your wife and dog in the trunk of your car, When you open it see who's happy to see you. Just kidding!!!

We went through the same thing last year.We lost our Yorkie "Hercules" last May. Linda said no more Dogs. The house was empty and I was not happy. I made it to the end of October and got another Yorkie with I think a little Jack Russell mixed in.
Things are back to normal.
Congratulations on the new family member.

Sorry to hear you lost him, Art. I don't think we could travel without Ginger. We picked her up from the German Shepherd rescue on a Tuesday after our 14 year companion Blitz died, and left to do the loop two days later. She's been a veteran cruiser ever since, and a better security system than a 9mm Glock.

Congratulations on the addition of Baxter to your family, Art. What a cute face!

Last December, I lost my blind kitty, Tom, after more than 20 years together. It killed me - he was my “son”, my baby. I, too, said “no more.” It is so much easier to charter without pets on board because I don’t have to be concerned with guest allergies and to where pet hair might be escaping.

Needing to have some sort of feline contact in my life, I got involved with Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary (“BCR”) in North Carolina where I now sponsor a FELV+ tabby cat named Tiffany who, ironically, is from Miami, Florida. Due to the positive FELV status, she was considered unadoptable and would have been euthanized. BCR provides these “throw-away” kitties with a [really nice] forever home and all the medical care they need without limitation. All 93 cats there want for nothing. So, while it’s not the same as actually having one, I do get the satisfaction of having helped save a life, and I get to watch Tiffany in her room on the live webcam. I also took up fostering rescues of blind and/or senior cats here and there and helping with transport to forever homes when I can. So, I sort of get to scratch my itch.

Our 14 yo Britney died 2 weeks ago. Amazing how attached we became to someone that never talked!
