I was told that you can fish, but cannot keep what you catch, so I thought we would see if we could "tag an release a cobia or wahoo. We loaded up and headed out Pensacola pass; however, it was rough enough that we managed to loose a varnished teak arm chair off the aft deck. We turned around went back inside and ultimately dropped anchor in that cut inside and just west of the pass.

Absolutely perfect. One other boat there. Use a pool float to ferry the dog and some rum punch to the island. We enjoyed the sun and the sand until for some reason I was compelled to swim over to the boat and scrape barnacles. The water was clear and continues to be oil free, best I can see.

It is really not that all that much better than Horn Island, but for some reason things seem better when you travel (and spend money) to get and stay there. Just doing my part to promote the FL panhandle tourism.

Regards,

C'mon now Vincent, you're only 80 miles from home! I love Horn Island as well, but it is hard to compare the brown water of the barrier islands to the clear ocean water of the Pensacola inlet. The water color and clarity alone makes that area far superior for anchoring and swimming. Why do you think so many from the Mississippi and Louisiana Gulf Coast areas head to the FL Panhandle? It's the pretty water the farther east you get from the Mobile river.

Dorothy said, There's no place like home, but it is easier to get everyone together when you go someplace else.
Water clarity can be offset by proximity. I can leave the house and be at Horn Island in about an hour vs 8 hours to Perdido key.
It is all good, just varying cost benefit ratios.

Vincent,

I have traveled there extensively over the years and made the Pensacola pass numerous times, and to Orange Beach as well, however in my center console not my Hatt, a 43 DC. The Pass can be a bit challanging at times and fishing is good right out front as you have probably already experienced. I caught a nice shark while trolling in the pass one time and a sting ray just bottom fishing off the jetties near Ft Pickens.

Grab a Bushwhacker at Peg Legs and there used to be a real hole in the wall just at the turn off from the toll booth toward Ft Pickens that was always allot of fun. Little dump amongst the highrises. Local hang out.

My sister lives down there and is a singer by the name of Holly Shelton Snowden. If she is singing somewhere she's worth lisening too, although I think she has a gig in MS at this time at some casino.

I envy you. We are 440 miles up the Tenn Tom at Aqua Yacht Harbor.

Hope the oil stays away and its flat out front.

The carrier Enterprise was at the base when I was there one time and fascinating. Go to the air museum in Pensacola if you like air planes its worth seeing too.

Be safe.

Will,
Thanks for the suggestions. We head back to Pascagoula in the morning. I'll note your suggestions for the next time.
Regards,

Good timing to leave this mornng because today lots of oil washed up on Pensacola beach both east and west of the Pensacola inlet. Very sad.
