i dont' think there are bad years... keep in mind that when you are looking at 20, 30 year old boats, the maintenance, upkeep and upgrade has a very large impact on the condition of the boat.
i'm not sure id' consider a solid bottom / balsa core sides a cored hull. I'd be pretty sure that the solid glass extends above water line so the balsa shoudln't be a problem. still some checks to be made but not as critical as a cored bottom.
as to the engines, maintenance and most importantly run history is critical... even more critical than the power rating... if the 735hp were run conservatively they'll last longer than lower HP rated engines run on the pins.
about the cost of bringing the boat up, it's really not that bad... figure about 1300NM from SO Fl to LI, if you run at hull speed that shoudl be jsut under $3000 in fuel (I paid between 1.90 and 2.05 on my run up to Nantucket earlier this month).
If you anchor out (possible and very nice in many spots) you can really cut down your costs. I think I only docked 4 nights on the trip this time around...
