Is there a bad Hatteras year(s)?

i dont' think there are bad years... keep in mind that when you are looking at 20, 30 year old boats, the maintenance, upkeep and upgrade has a very large impact on the condition of the boat.

i'm not sure id' consider a solid bottom / balsa core sides a cored hull. I'd be pretty sure that the solid glass extends above water line so the balsa shoudln't be a problem. still some checks to be made but not as critical as a cored bottom.

as to the engines, maintenance and most importantly run history is critical... even more critical than the power rating... if the 735hp were run conservatively they'll last longer than lower HP rated engines run on the pins.

about the cost of bringing the boat up, it's really not that bad... figure about 1300NM from SO Fl to LI, if you run at hull speed that shoudl be jsut under $3000 in fuel (I paid between 1.90 and 2.05 on my run up to Nantucket earlier this month).

If you anchor out (possible and very nice in many spots) you can really cut down your costs. I think I only docked 4 nights on the trip this time around...

Randy , could you possibly PM me with some contact info regarding that Lauderdale 53' ? I have a cousin who lives there and he could give the boat a preliminary once-over for me . Also I would like to see more pics if possible : staterooms , bridge , transom , foredeck , etc. Thanks , Bruce PS: Any clue as to why a boat with that pricetag is still for sale ?

Does anyone know when Hatteras started making engineroom access from the cockpit on the 50' + sportfishes ? While not a make or break feature for me it would be nice to have as I am quite tall and it is a pain in the a.. to crawl down through the salon floor . Bruce

Bruce, the only reason Al's boat hasn't sold is that he hasn't had a serious/capable buyer board it. It's that simple.

I'll PM you Al's phone number as just spoke with him a few minutes ago regarding another HOF member inquiry. There are more pictures available, and I may still have some that Al sent when I posted that thread for him.

Thanks to Dan and Randy for putting me in touch with Mr Scarborough. Dan I would very much like to speak with you regarding Al's boat . I will call you this evening . Bruce PS Give my best to Chris

Access to the ER on a 53C is via the fold-up steps from the lower level, like my 58TC, as well as having hatches in the salon floor for the big stuff. Having access from the cockpit is not going to give you any more headroom than you would have vs this type entry. Glad to hear you got up with Al.

The mid 80's boats had better electrical systems than many of the prior years.

Except the hatt's I've been on that have access from the cockpit also have full stand-up engine rooms. Don't extrapolate this to all models though, I know it's just the 55c and 60c for sure.

Unless I'm mistaken, he's not looking at anything that big.

I think the 50, 52, and 60C were the first in the Hatt line to have cockpit access in the early 80s. Been in a few 50 and 52s and they are not standing height for sure. Not bad access IMO, but no way like the super 60!

Hey, at 6'1", I can't even stand up straight in the ER of a 77C. I think Bruce was just thinking he had to access the ER by dropping down through the hatches in the salon which is not the case on Al's boat.

No doubt the entry through the lower deck is a hands and knees kind of thing, but there's pretty good height once you're inside. It's easy enough to do routine fluid checks etc., and you can pop the hatches for all the overhead height you need when the need arises.

Once again your assumption is correct Randy . I am not expecting to stand up in the engineroom and I do not mind the hands and knees approach required of the under companionway steps entry . What is a pain to me is having to move furniture and disrupt the entire salon just to check fluids or do a little maintenance. Bruce
