Since this will be your first mid size boat and your first Hatteras, don't even THINK of foregoing surveys. If you had owned several large boats in the past, and you maintained them yourself, that might be different. In your case, you probably don't know what to look for, and the lessons are expensive. (like poker lessons)
That being said, most surveyors are clowns, and it will be worth your time to ask around. There are some thorough and knowledgable surveyors, you have to search carefully. Ask to see copies of past surveys they have done, with the name of the boat and price removed. They should be able to accomodate you.
In the same line of thinking, it is very important to have your OWN broker in the deal. He will (should) be looking out for your interest, be the wise friend in your corner, not just a used car salesman trying to close the deal no matter what lies he has to tell like the selling broker will likely be. (sorry reputable brokers, that's the way it usually is) What do you care if the selling broker has to split his commission? Tough luck for him. Buisness is buisness.
$175k is probably a lot of money for you (it is for me). Be patient and thoughtful.
