Another shift looks more like Charlie now. The eye passed east of us about 40 miles since we were on the backside NBD. I hope it weakens and goes west.

5PM is event a little more to the left/south, and the NHC discussion hints that the next one may be even further south... Keys are going to require evacs again... after that, it's another one for the gulf.

Looking better, well for us in the Miami area..... Gorgeous day today....

yeah, what a beautiful day! not a cloud in the sky... we just got back from the sandbar with the tender!

it's still a compact storm with 64kts wind only extending 40 miles, forecasted to be 50 miles out by the time it gets closest to us. not much to worry about here... folding the bimini is as much prep as we need.

Stoped home at lunchtime .... Ft. Lauderdale, FLA ........ boats in the canal are bouncin a bit and I now have my own "wave-pool", but all in all, not bad !!

Ike is looking bad for Texas. Isn't one of our members in Kemah, TX? I was just watching a report from there. They were at a marina. I saw a lot of bimini tops still up. Thats not good.... this sucker is going to push a lot of water I bet....

National Weather Service just put out a statment saying that anyone staying in the Galveston island area is facing "certain death"! several news stations are saying "get out of there now! those that are staying are told to write there social security number on their arm for post mortem identification...

heh, the idiots. Wonder how much they'll bitch and moan when nobody rescues them.

200 had to be rescued already, BEFORE the storm even makes landfall...

i can't figure out why so many boats were left in marinas around galveston and Houston since it's been crystal clear for two days now that Ike was going to make landfall there...

"Write your SSN on your arm...k thanks"

Maybe they WANTED to leave them there, if you know what I mean....

So, who is to blame for the unfortunate deaths that occured......

The storm was so big, and the options few, that there was no logical place to move the boats in the alloted time. The "crystal" was essentially 500 miles wide! I know lots of guys with boats down there who don't want to lose them, but there really weren't any good choices.

Let's say you could go back in time 48 hours, knowing with certainty what we know now. Where would you have gone? Corpus is 200 nm away and the marina downtown is flooded, minimal boat damage. Getting down there the last few days would not have been fun even on the ICW. They only lifted the storm warnings there early today.

Initially it was predicted that Ike was going to land near Corpus Christi-than Port lavaca--it turned late--it was 450 miles wide--really no place to run.

Ike was a worst case scenario from a size point of view but teh turn to the north and hit on Galveston bay has been in the forecast for about 3 days before landfall, that left some time to head south...

there was some flooding south but the hurricane storm winds did't extend as far south as they did north...

it's a tough call...been there done that a few times in the past. and when you have other things to worry about (home, business, etc...) the boat can't always be a priotiry...

The hurricane watch extended all the way south to Baffin Bay on Thursday. Corpus was doing limited evacuations.

Really, "moving south" just wasn't a viable option at any point when you could have pulled it off.
