It just figures....just last night I got my satellite dish pointed/aimed so I can have my Dish Network activated in time for kickoff for Michigan's first game next Saturday, and now I've got to climb up there and take the darn thing down.

I don't see anybody taking any steps to prepare around here, but I've been working all day to bring all the stuff from the flybridge and the bow inside, finding and getting my extra lines ready for the dockmaster to come get my boat, filling water tanks, etc. I even put the genny back together (I had taken parts off yesterday so I could go get replacements/spares). Am I being over-cautious or is Miami just not in it???? From what I've seen Miami's either on the dirty side or a direct hit; there are computer models going both ways on the extremes and a bunch of tracks in the middle. What concerns me is that no one is preparing their boats here which means FLYING DEBRIS!

Hey Angela,

I just sent you a PM.

relax... too eraly to panick and start working overtime !

Cuba does give us some protection although experience shows indeed that once the storms hit the straights or the eastern gulf... remember.. what's his name... the once that hit ft myers ? barely a cat1 off Cuba...

that said, I'm not too worried yet.. spent the week end out on the bay, will deal with it tomorrow if need be.

the slip next to mine is empty... come over here, it's well protected (at least under 110mph) we'll have a hurricane party...

now, it doens't mean i dont take storms seriously... i do ! but we're not quite a push the panic button yet !... keep the basil out on the fordeck and the dish pointed. although dont' be like me, taking it off the FMTV when the wind hit 90 like i did for KAtrina :-)

Angela, I'm only a phone call away.

Mario

good luck guys...

randy, what's the coverage area on your policy/binder ?

Just a note regarding State Farm's knowlege on boats. Up until this storm started making the news, I just laughed it off. But now...?

Three weeks after purchasing my 58, State Farm called and decided they needed a market value and general condition survey before they could issue a policy (something they have never requested before). Pat Bustle aka Liquid Asset is helping me with this, and he asked for clarification on exactly what they were looking for. The girl in the office copied me on the ensuing e-mails, and my 58TC was referred to by State Farm as "Randy's houseboat". :) Yes, this is the same girl who asked if my 58 had a trailer.

When I took FREEBIRD to Riviera Dunes, I had them fax proof of insurance. Despite the reference to the 58 on the cover page, the policy info was on my 41DC. They had referred to it as a "Bubble Cabin".

Then, last week, came the ultimate topper. The Boston Whaler I purchased 3 weeks ago became the topic of discussion as it too was still under a binder. The agent called and asked if I had a picture of the boat as their underwriter was questioning the earlier information that showed it as an I/O. There was no designation for a jet-drive in their propulsion category. I informed her that I did not have any pictures, but I would be glad to bring the boat by so they could take a picture. She took pictures of the hull and had me tilt the console so she could take a picture of the Yamaha 650cc engine (50HP). She also noted the serial number on the engine.

The next day, she called my office with some "bad news". Seems the underwriter told her my Whaler was "home-made" because NADA doesn't list a 14' Rage, or any jet-drive boat, in their 1992 listings of Whalers! Therefore, he was declining to insure it! After laughing out loud, I gave her Whaler's toll-free number and advised her to tell her underwriter to look at the '93 NADA listings which did show the boat. She said okay, and promised a call back with the results.

A couple of hours later, she called and said the underwriter was now satisfied, but my original rate quote would be higher because they had to show it as having 90HP instead of 50! This time I didn't laugh. I questioned where the hell they found this idiot who was calling all the shots. I reminded her that she had all the info on the engine in my boat, and she could once again contact Whaler to verify the horsepower rating. I was as polite as I could possibly be under the circumstances, but I told her I'd be damned if I would pay even $5 more a year for something I didn't have! One hour later everything was resolved.

I have to wonder what I'll get into if this storm messes up FREEBIRD. Hopefully she'll either be spared altogether, or be a total loss. I'm afraid anything in between would be a nightmare. I can hear this underwriter now.

"Dear Mr Register,

We received your claim RE: your 58 foot Hatteras houseboat. It has come to our attention your houseboat has been modified from its original design.

The bulkhead separating the original pilothouse from the covered outdoor area has been removed. A large wet-bar with icemaker and undercounter refrigerator was put in its place. Wing doors were added and the open area was enclosed and air conditioned. Sliding glass doors were installed to finish the enclosure aft. Furniture was then added to this area, and the original fiberglass shell overhead as well as the port and starboard walls were covered with an aftermarket material not obtained from the manufacturer of the vessel.

It is my opinion that these changes lead to the ultimate failure resulting in damage to your houseboat during the hurricaine. We therefore refuse to accept liability for your claim.

Yours truly,

Ben Dover

Beware guys - the latest track takes this thing over SouthEAST Florida!

This is a very fluid situation with track right now, and don't be lulled into complacency by the fact that its just a TS right now - it is a small core storm (good) but that means it can spin up fast, and the water north of Cuba is both very warm (86F - bad) and there's essentially zero shear there (real bad)

Let it never be said that Mother Nature is not a tough old broad, but at least she was good enough to let all us storm preppers rest up until late August. Last year we had been through it and through it.

Heed the cautions, folks. These things can build quickly. I can still vividly recall many friends and neighbors tossing a coin as to whether they'd do ANY prep for Wilma last year, since it was only forecast to be a weak Cat 2, if that, when it hit the SW mainland of Florida (plus it being the 21st named storm last year, we were all TIRED!). And then it would have to blow across about 140 miles of the peninsula to reach us on the SE side of the state. Well, it stayed persistently Cat 2 through most of it, and unfortunately, FL is so flat that it really doesn't knock much of the punch out of hurricanes. The official read was that Wilma was a Cat 1, but many anecdotal reports (and certainly the damage caused) speak of Cat 2 and beyond in certain areas. And it beat the living crap out of our area.

Don't panic, but be ready. Anchors, chafe guards, anchors, loads of lines, duct tape...fill the fuel & water, pump the holding tank. Work, work work. Yep, can't wait to get into that nice canal water swimming anchors out.

I'm at the office maybe the pictures will come out better here...
1. Can you see the canal in there?
2. can you see the street in there?
3. the poor poor jacuuzi.. :(

Carl, I think if you post them one per message that they will come up in the thread. Hopefully you are not in line to take more pictures like these. Good luck.

The threat now of a "coastrunner" looks real.

If this happens the entire east coast is in for a rough day or two. If the COC stays over water, it will not weaken - which means basically the entire Florida East Coast could be exposed to a hurricane!

Not good guys... keep an eye on this and if you're in the potential damage path I'd be making preparations TODAY. Yes, it takes time, but if you don't prepare and get caught flatfooted you'll be quite upset wth yourself.....

The convective field has roughly doubled in the last couple of hours, and the center appears to be about to come off Cuba.

Be careful guys......

HELP!!!!

I have a 41ft 1963 Double Cabin that I just had hauled out last week to have some work done. The boat is in a yard up on supports. Thats the good news...the not so good news is that I live in South Florida. What is anyones opinion of having the boat OUT of the water during a good blow called Ernesto.......I am not sure what to do....The boat is somewhat sheltered by high buildings...about two stories.

My thinking is that at 40K lbs it is a dead weight...but in the water it is a slow projectile again a concrete pier..

I need feedback from captains who have more experience than I.

Thanks much.

Rian

Out of the water is good PROVIDED the location it is at is secure against surge. If the boat can be floated off the stands or the ground under them can be liquified (e.g. if it floods) then it can be REAL BAD.

Get ahold of the yard NOW and find out what the elevation is, and if they intend to add stands, chain them together, and otherwise secure the boat!

where is the boat ?

i really doubt surge will be an issue with this one.. even with wilma packing water up the bay, it's was only 4 or 5 ft.

check to make sure the yard secure the stands and take all the canvas, cushions, antennas, etc... down.
