A friend of mine looked at convertible designs and determined that the IPS system saved enough room to allow for an entire additional stateroom's worth of interior volume- really an astonishing amount when you think about it. For example, a 54 convertible with standard inboards would be a threee-stateroom boat, where with IPS or Zeus drives it would be four. The tankage was smaller, also, because they used less fuel- and one reason they use less fuel is that the propulsion systems weighs less (I'm summarizing what he wrote to me, hoping I have it right here)

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out in yacht design over the next several years. Smaller and more efficient propulsion systems make a 50 foot boat a lot bigger than it used to be.

So lighter and more space makes them more efficient and like a bayliner or an ocean. Im not sold on the ride or seaworthyness of the new designs yet. I hear that boat in oregon was lighter than similarly sized vessels.

A friend of mine has the pod drive engines and said they are expensive to maintain ???

It was lighter down below, and heavier up top. Which is probably not an ideal combination.

FWIW, MJM boats are light but very well built and strong. Generally the reviews and reports of owners are very positive- I have not seen anything negative. I think you can build a boat that is both light and strong, safe and seaworthy. No question there is a minimum weight- what that is for each length and beam combination is anyone's guess.
