I'll bet you 500 bucks that your DD cannot start from cold without smoking in the same general air/water temps that are typical of say LI or the Ches bay when we are cruising - air temp in the morning around 70F, water temp around the same.

No, I'm not going to buy a ticket to FL but we get down there occasionally and if it is convenient I'll give you the chance to prove it. If your DD starts without smoke from cold, you'll get the 500 bucks. If not... ;)

I feel bad...it would be like stealing money. But oh well!

In fact, I'll tell you what I'm gonna do...

You take a video of your boat starting from cold with the camera aligned so can see the smoke - not aligned so as to minimize it - and if there is no smoke I'll send you 100 bucks. Post it here. It's not even a bet. No smoke - 100 bucks.

All summer long my fresh rebuilt engine did not smoke on start up here in NJ. No block heaters on. Even now with colder temps the smoke is minimal and clears right away. The starboard engine smokes a little but not much more. MicroKap is 2 slips from me and he can attest to that. The other thing that amazes me is how my transom never has soot on it. Many of the newer boats at our club regularly come in with dirty transoms. I had a brand new Viking next to me and that boat always smoked on start up and came home with soot on the transom. Both Viking and MAN said it was normal.

MAN's for some reason smoke like a biatch. There was a guy with a Viking down the dock from me who had 'em in his boat. They had sequential turbos on them and I think the deal was that the base compression was real low (intentionally) to allow for that. Anyway, until they got good and hot with a load on them they never cleaned up no matter the weather, and he always had soot all over the transom when he came in.

Oh yeah, he also got a 1k hour "normal service" bill for $20 large (!!) from the local dealer. Apparently those turbos were considered service items. (!!) He was drunk in the bar whining about it - I didn't ask too many questions.

My neighbor sold his before the 1000 hour service. He said it was 18K for a pair of 1050HP MANS. He traded in the boat for a new 54 Viking with 1550HP MANS. Wonder if he'll get rid of this one before the 1000 hour service?

Since you won't believe it, Let me know when you are in the area and you can see for yourself. You can touch and feel the engines even spend the night aboard so you are sure they are cold. Bring money. You can try my 92's or a pair of 671TI's that were rebuilt 14 years ago.

Do the video - I trust you that it will be a cold start! I don't know when we will get to FL again and I don't want to be seen as avoiding the issue! :)

The video that Willie had was like the smoke we saw on warm engines that continued for over 5 minutes, then I brought them up to 1000 rpm and they smoked a lot more than even Willie's video. I think that's way too much for 800 hour engines as I've been on George's boat (Incentive) and have not seen anything close to that. His have around 2800 hours if I remember correctly.

Those guys do that as long as its cold and a low idle. After a minute or so when the oil pressure has stabilised, I bump them up to 1000 and they clear immediately. I do have one bad injector on the port engine tho... it leaves a slight sheen when idling... ws

Does a (diesel) sheen on the water from exhaust (when engine at operational temp and idling) usually indicate a bad injector(s)?

It's one of the more-frequent causes, yes.

WOW. I am feeling like sooo vindicated! Thanks carl for your undying support of my diagnosis ;-))
Right after I bought the sub I pulled all the injectors and found 2 on each main with broken springs. Short of getting into a top end job, all were given "willy's karate chop test and passed" with the exception of the 4 bad units. Had a guy in NOLA exchange them. He does the rebuilds on site. Last time out 4L on the port engine was about 150-200 F cooler at the manifold, so I am guessing thats the culprit. Next spring, all 24 go to the shop for a real test. ws

Karate-chop test?! ;)

SURE... all us experts know how to field test stuff, right? Simply hold the unit in your left hand and give the spring cap a karate chop and notice if it sprays. Although not accurate by any means, it shows the unit is "functioning" only! ( DD mechanics call it a "pop" test.)
Kinda like a cross between "Flight of the Phoenix" and the other great movie "P-scals great adventure" LOL ws

Bill, do you make all kinds of crazy ninja sounds and voice-over dubbing when doing the test?

Things like "You too boucoup" "No Alabama black snake for Suzy" and the best one of all is "Love you long time Joe"... doesnt seem to work on reliabuilts tho, unless their shop is in Taiwan... ;-)) ws

A premium Reliabuilt 'H" injector is what took my engine out!!!!

So where does one get "reliable" injectors?
