Cash For Clunkers

I thought EMP just affected engines with electronic ignitions. How can it affect voltage from a battery or an alternator?

Please don't tell me I'm gonna have to put an old DD in my Blazer.

You may be okay if you don't have an electronic ignition module. Do you just have an ignition coil and points? If so, you MAY be alright. I don't know if ignition coils would be affected or not. I fear that the lasting effects of the magnetic radiation would mess that up too.

Would our starters on the DD's work then?

I'm no expert on EMP. Maybe someone else can comment. I know that if they were running when it hit, they'd still be running when everything else was left idle. If you had a DD in a truck, you could always push start it. In a boat, that might be a problem.

Hey Randy,
How about those electronic locks on gun safes? Those would be DOA if EMP hit. Just when you really need your guns, you'd be out of luck. Glad I have an old-fashioned combination lock.

Well, we did pull the trigger here LOL

Admiral liked the Jetta, so we got the showroom Jetta with almost everything with a non-sled vehicle that will now be crushed. Anyone want a 10,000 lb tranny cooler?

Yep, just an ignition coil and points. It's hard to see how those could be affected, but I'm no expert either. Let's just pray we never have to find out the hard way.

Actually, that's an interesting question and one I've never been asked or thought about before. Given that it is in fact an electronic lock with a circuit board, I would have to think it would indeed be rendered inoperable. I'll check on that and get back to you as I too have an electronic lock on my gun safe.

Back to cash for clunkers, have you guys seen this?

OK, I made a couple of calls and confirmed the fact the electronic locks would become toast where EMP was involved. I almost wish I didn't know this now as many of the safes I sell come standard with electronic locks.

Looks like I'll have to follow the old, "Don't ask, don't tell", policy on this one. Of course if anyone asks, I'll have to tell them what I know. I don't see myself changing out my electronic lock though. I've always got a "few" guns out of the safe at all times, and I realize that if in fact we are attacked with nuclear weapons, opening my safe will be the least of my worries. Could be I would need a gun to ensure a quick and painless ending for me and my loved ones as opposed to self-defense... if you know what I mean.

Quick!... somebody tell me that Noel bought a green Jetta so I can get this off my mind! :D

Me Jetta ain't green it is white!!!!! and I still like the prius :P

Okay, good question for the autophiles here..... How do I protect me leather seats from the childseat plastic?

And Karl, How about a way for the deisel to warm up? This thingy has glowplugs?

You didn't take advantage of the $500 AGW credit for buying a green car?

You do realize that racists drive white cars.

To honor the "Cash For Clunkers" program, Cadillac announced a new, limited edition, "Barack Obama Signature Edition", Escalade. Standard equipment includes a newly designed stability control system as this vehicle is programmed to change directions with absolutely no input from the driver. Other features include a 300 disc CD changer including a factory supplied CD from Ludacris featuring the hit single, "Obama Is Here".

Other features that will set this vehicle apart from the standard Escalade include:

* 26" rims with run flat tires.
* Bullet-proof glass.
* Driver and passenger ejection seats (requires optional moonroof)
* Custom refrigerator with forty ounce can rack.
* Custom "Excalade" badging (24k plated).
* Gun racks front and rear.
* Sniff-proof storage compartments.
* Built in police scanner/radar jammer.
* 5 million watt stereo with 69 speakers.
* 4 flatscreen televisions
* Hydraulic suspension.

It is available only in black with black leather interior. Supplies are limited, and Cadillac officials are very optimistic this model will become their best selling vehicle to date.

Update on the TDI. I got 39.77mpg in mixed driving including lot's of stop and go and a long trip at 70mph and at times more. Man I love this car!!!!!

What a let down. I thought Blobama would be in it.

Noel, torque converter or clutch? My '98 easily gets 50 MPG on the highway and 42.5 around town with the stick shift. What's amazing to me is yours has almost 50% more HP than mine and still gets similar mileage even with all the emissions junk on it.

BTW, the shredder is kind of lame. A certain notorious person in the Bronx had one that we were involved with. I watched them put an mid-'70s Electra 225 through it. Literally "gone in 60 seconds", came out in pieces no bigger than your thumb. Of course it was a bit bigger than the one in the video and had two locomotive engines driving it. :eek:

We have the DSG (only ones left LOL). I will be adding as a regular routine AJX 1 oz per tank

Noel
