Cash For Clunkers

Regarding the Prius - have you ask what it will cost to replace the batteries when they crap out? Of course, replacing the batteries at any cost assumes they will still make the model you need.

Red fuel is the same as regular diesel just with a bit of dye.

The fuel is dyed red to mark it as Hi Sulpher Off Road as such it does not have the highway tax on it. I've heard some say that when the ultra low sulpher fuel came out all diesel dyed or not is ULSD. I don't know if that's true or not do you? You would have to know that before you put off road fuel in a new diesel vehicle because the converters will not tolerate the sulpher.

As far as I know there are no "boutique" diesel fuels out there. The difference is only in the handling i.e. the heating oil guys may still have some residual sulfur in their storage and delivery systems.

Here's another thought. The new TDI gets almost 50 MPG. Why take the chance? To save a couple of hundred buck over the life of the car?

There's guys on the TDI forums crying about all the digital salutes they get because they do 50 MPH on interstates so they can "hypermile" and get 60 MPG. Why? So that rollerskate can get crushed by a Suburban doing 80? It's not like they're going to put your phenomenal mileage on your tombstone.

How cheap can you get?

real cheap!!! Ever see the cost of college these days LOL. We drive the TDI tonight, then decision time. FYI, We only drive a bit on weekends and sometimes during the week. Just next to Manhattan and a lot of wait and wait around here too. Think about one's usage for the vehicle. Now as for my new beater dually.....

It is a pitiful , misdirected and misguided program that wastes taxpayers hard earned money and good used cars someone could use to get a job and pay some taxes . I would not be proud of being involved in it . I have a 15 Y O vehicle that qualifies and is maybe worth a grand . After seeing the waste involved in this program ,I'll give it away before I participate in this BS............Pat

My 03 TDI has a converter on the back end of the engine but it does not require ULSD; LS fuel is fine (500ppm max).

It does run a bit cleaner on the 15ppm stuff (ULSD), but the difference is not significant.

The issue with the newer engines (07 and beyond) are different sorts of converters, particulate traps and in some cases urea injection systems that are damaged by any material amount of sulfur in the fuel.

BTW Biodiesel runs just fine in these engines as it is ULSD by definition; the reason the carmakers placard against it is that if improperly washed (unlikely in a commercially-produced product but rather likely if you make it in your garage) small amounts of methanol may remain in the product. Methanol is extremely corrosive, destroys lubricity and is hygroscopic (which greatly exacerbates the problem) and as a consequence will destroy common-rail pumps almost immediately; even distributor injection pumps such as are found in my '03 TDI will take severe damage from fuel that has even tiny amounts of methanol in it. The damage caused by this is instantly detectable on teardown by simple visual inspection and as such WILL cause your warranty to be voided.

High Sulfur fuel is gone now. It is either low sulfur or ultra-low sulfur and both of the non-taxed versions are dyed.

Thanks Karl and Sky. As for your participation.... You are, you pay taxes. As for your reasononing... it is a free country after all, do what you want.

Get caught with red fuel once and the fine will wipe out any saving. Word is, NJ is checking trucks, it wouldn't be a stretch for them to check cars.

As far as how you drive, the urban duty cycle is the only place where hybrids have any advantage, and you still have to drive them "just so" to get that mileage. But if that's really how you do most of your driving it may be the way to go.

NYC has hybrid buses. Perfect place for them right? They get 2 MPG (that's not a typo) and have nothing but problems with them.

And BTW all diesel vehicles (by law) have a clear section in the fuel line in the engine compartment. Guess why?

I say let it happen, I am hoarding all my old clunkers under armed guard, and the blocks holding them up are boobytrapped.

Realistically I say let fools become fools, some people have a destiny that cannot be changed, if they want to go this direction let them.

Bottom line is the obvious fact its just another socialistic agenda thats been painted and sweetened so gullible people will jump at it hook line and sinker.
They'll take my '72 K/5 Blazer when they pry my cold, dead fingers from the steering wheel. :D

I was driving it over the week-end and remembered an earlier conversation on here about our old DD powered Hatts not being affected by EMP when the terrorists get such things figured out. I figure a man's got to have some way to get to his boat, so I'll be passing all the Noel-types in their Prius's on the way to the marina.

who said we were getting a prius? I said we are looking

With an EMP attack, your Blazer won't be running either. The only engines still running will be the old mechanical diesels. Everything else needs electricity of some sort to operate

LOL we won't be here if that happens I think so what about that Prius then!!!! :P

I have a 2001 ford diesel pick up it has 200,000 miles on it and gets around 18 MPG. So that's around 11,000 gals of fuel burned so far. Hypotheticly if I used the un taxed red fuel I would have saved around $4400.

BTW I was stopped and checked for hi sulpher fuel in FL. They used a dip tube and suction ball to draw fuel up into a globe when they saw it was red they wrote me a $500 fine. I beat it in court I argued that the color of the fuel did not prove it was hi sulpher fuel without the highway tax on it. I argued that some fuel additives contain red dye. The judge agreed and threw it out.

Brian

The federal fine is $1,000 or $10/ gal whichever is higher. States may have other penalties as well. It really all depends on the cop who's writing the ticket. And in Brian's case, the judge. Naturally, the hungrier the vehicle, the more it pays. But if you're only burning four gallons a week it's not worth the risk. IMHO.

Unless, of course, you just passionately despise paying taxes. :D

I thought EMP just affected engines with electronic ignitions. How can it affect voltage from a battery or an alternator?

Please don't tell me I'm gonna have to put an old DD in my Blazer.

Yeah, and I said Noel-types as in those who would even consider buying a Prius. :D
