Boat Photo Thread

Every once in awhile someone will show up in the Great Lakes with a true sportfish, outriggers, tuna tower and all. I wonder if the can catch the little perch with that rig?? A friend of mine owns a mid 40'ish Chris Craft aft cabin. He pulled the Crusaders and installed 280hp. Yanmars. He takes the boat to and from Florida annually. He claims 2.7mpg. at 8 to 9 mph. The other interesting fact about Great Lakes boats is that almost all mid size, (under 45') boats have gas engines. The original buyers looked at their planned 50hr./year usage and opted to save the 80K extra cost of the diesels. They didn't realize that they also lost the torque. Our gas powered 36C gets 1mpg at 9mph. but any other speed shows .5mpg. So if we are going somewhere we either stay at 8 to 9, or go to full 18 to 19 mph cruise.:)

They use the out riggers for the Wallies, Lake Trout and Salmon. A little over kill, but they work better than the plainer boards. Ya don't use them on the perch.

The harbor photo was taken by my friend John Van Dyke, who is a painter; an oil painting done from the photo hangs in my house.

The running shot was taken by Bob Grieser, for an article on the restoration of my Hatteras in "Soundings", in the fall of 2005. The magazine sent him out to get photos of the boat and he spent an entire day in the blazing heat of August; well worth the effort as they turned out smashing. I've seen a lot of his work since then and it's always great.

Jim.. that running shot is really fantastic!

A couple more since we're on the snow topic...

Makes me shiver ... you live on that boat? What type of heaters do you use to survive a Maryland winter?

I've lived aboard in MD, but never through a winter like this one. I don't think I could have. For many of my liveaboard winters here, in Baltimore and Kent Island, I was on a Striker, which is made out of aluminum. Talk about cold and damp? it was like being in a refrigerator.

The Hatteras 36 was not as big, but a much better liveaboard- almost as much living space, and a lot warmer. It would have been difficult to be LESS warm.

We are supposed to get warmer weather within a week or so. I hope so. We could all use a break around here. It's been a terrible winter.
