I did quite a bit of charitable work in Haiti post earthquake. To say that some people / groups / charities raising money for quake relief were scams would be the mother of all under statements! It' happens frequently.
Yep, that's why I'm hoping I can track this guy down and deal with him directly. It'll take all the guesswork out of the equation.

Randy, I'm local if you need any shoe leather (actually sandal rubber) work.

Thanks, I'll let you know. I contacted that reporter again and asked if she could give my contact information to Mr. Veasey. I also sent her a link to this thread. I can see she has read the message (Facebook), but I haven't heard back yet.

I did look through the Tony Veasey Facebook page I mentioned earlier and saw that one of his friends is a friend of my niece in Lake Wales. I sent her a message and asked her to contact that person to see if he is in fact the same guy with the boat. Still waiting on that too.

Just call me Columbo! That is in fact him I found on Facebook according to my niece who knows him too. She's going to track down a phone number for me tomorrow.

I emailed one of the ladies from argis, she answered with a gmail account. Told her I needed something concrete and verifiable. She referred me to the paper and said I could mail it.lol

Gee, that's encouraging. I'm afraid these folks may be doing more harm than good as I saw where somebody else tried to contact them with no success. People will lose interest in this very quickly.

Not sure if his is just adding more complexity to the situation or not... since I am fine just cutting a check in this fellas name, but It may not be a bad idea to see if the VFW Foundation, which is the charitable arm of the VFW national organization will do a pass-through for him.

The up side (at the risk of sounding like "whats in it for me") is that donations would then be deductible. My guess is that they would want to take some administrative costs off the top of the donations but I for one would definitely be willing to increase my check if it were to a 501c3 that I could trust.

Nothing wrong with thinking about a tax deduction, and that would be the downside to direct contributions or a GoFundMe deal. I get the feeling that Argus outfit is more interested in the publicity than actually helping this guy. No doubt he wouldn't mind giving up a few bucks from a contribution through a legitimate national organization. Maybe you or someone else can look into the VFW angle while I'm tracking Mr. Veasey down.

Deal... I'll try and ring some bells around the VFW org on monday

Still haven't heard from my niece and ran into another dead end with one of his "friends". Someone on another forum mentioned going through an American Legion Hall to disburse funds, but I don't know how that works from a tax standpoint.

WTF GUYS. Tax deduction or not if you want to help the guy do it. Loosing a deduction is not going to kill you. Do it because you want to help him not to impress your accountant or others.

I agree with Scott. If we want to help out a fellow Hatteras owner who has had to deal with the loss of his boat, we should do so directly. I hope we can find a way to do that and give him some help.

Well, what's wrong with both?

Dumb comment about impressing anybody, and it would be an enticement to donate more if it were deductible.

So Sharry and I are in Publix yesterday and I overhear a gent talking about sand in the lower unit on his boat. Standing in the check out line he gets in line behind us. I say bummer getting sand in your units but not as bad as the Vet who lost his boat. He says it happened at the scene as he was the first responder to the fire for the sheriff's department. As part of his usual work, he tows the derelicts to where they are hauled out for junking. He added the department is also working to help him taking internal as well as external donations for the scrapping and hoping something is left over to go toward another boat. I missed the women with the department yesterday but will contact her Monday and get some specifics. Might be safer to donate through the sheriff's office. The deputy I was talking to estimated $10K for the disposal alone!

I'll post contact info after I speak to Officer Weiss on Monday.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like we're getting closer.
