BTW, anyone got recommendations for painting over corroded chrome valve covers. No good resources around here to re-chrome. I have one chrome and one painted per motor. Thx
For chrome after cleaning and scuffing with sandpaper or green scotchbrite use Green self etching primer let it dry well before top coating. Can always spray on with engine how as it will bake on. Then top coat. Works great . Powdercoat is always great., but have to take them off and leave top end open or put oil soaked towel on top to keep away rust while off. But Then you cpuld also send them out to be re-chromed.

Looks awesome indeed! So maybe this is a dumb question. You washed the engine and used a bunch of brake cleaner with great success - how did you deal with all of the runoff into the bilge? Did you shut off your bilge pumps and vacuum the bilge?

Eh, soapy water yes, but I would NOT vacuum up puddles of brake cleaner...... just saying.

We shut off our bilge pumps prior to starting.

I am pretty sure most all of the brake cleaner evaporated. The water ended up being pretty nasty with paint film and all kinds of grease/gunk from cleaning the engine. Not exactly what I would want to bilge out.

After that we (and by "we" i mean the high schooler that helps me out :cool:) scooped all the water out from under the engines into 5gal buckets and we properly disposed of it (not in the water). Once he scooped the big puddles out the shop vac sucked up the remainder. Then he wiped everything down with mean green or purple stuff and paper towels.

Thanks for the reply. It's a job I'm anticipating perhaps this summer and wasn't sure how to approach it. Now... I just need that "high schooler".

I'm convinced that every old boat owner should have a bilge rat on call. They are great at lifting, sanding, cleaning, reaching into tight areas (and breaking stuff, so you gotta watch them lol).
