It seems to me that all parties were “bottom fishing” and were both surprised that they caught exactly what they were fishing for. I can’t even tell you how many brokerages I’ve seen go out of business over the decades because they chose to specialize in boats who's peak years of manufacture was 1989. And I’m talking back when they were still young enough to find insurance and dockage.

I'm not sure that's such a reasonable take. The boat business tends to be weekend oriented, that's when most people have time off from work to meet with a broker, tour boats, or buy boats. The broker blowing up at him because he called about a boat for sale on a Saturday seems pretty out-of-touch at best. So does getting mad about calling on his cellphone, that was the number in the ad, the buyer didn't write the ad, the broker did. The guy sounds like a jackass IMHO.

Exactly my point. The broker specializes in cheap old boats, and seemed to be surprised that a buyer called, and the buyer was looking at cheap old boats, and was surprised the reaction he received. Hence -Bottom Fishing.

... and I must be stupid to call on a Saturday... walked away from the boat he intended to purchase.

I once was interested in a Grand Banks and the owner, who was only available on weekends, had met me and already shown it to me twice.

After some contemplation, I decided to buy it and after driving down two hours with cash in hand, he answered the phone grumpy and said he was buying groceries and to come back later.

This instantly killed the deal under the assumption that his outlook on life probably extended to the condition of the vessel so I took a pass. Absolutely no regrets.

I have no idea where you live, but I have to leave the house to go buy groceries, and am not home for a hour or two, so you would have to come back later. Sounds like you stood a guy up to me. Bottom Fishing.

Four hour round trip and I arrive cash in hand, and he was more interested in groceries than selling the boat?
Sorry, but he missed out.

Yanmars were a popular repower in the late 90’s for 30-40’ range. I watched several 34’s that were Done here in FtPierce. It was a great package. I have a neighbor with a 37 that was repowered with 450 hp yanmars it will top over 30kts not mph. But the parts are crazy expensive easily 3-5 times Detroit.

Is it me or is Retired1 abrasive to the point of being unhelpful?

Truth is a bitter thing to swallow. But he’s usually right

I was a little confused by this. You had seen the boat twice and now you were ready to purchase. But you didn't call to set up a transfer? You drove 2 hours and then called expecting the seller to be at your "beck and call"? I'm not sure I'd be prepared to drop everything for your convenience.
