  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
This is a follow on to my old thread that I recently tried to revive.

I gave a 2nd look today to a 52C galley up, this time with the Admiral/CBO (chief of baby operations). She liked the boat, but is interested in what is involved, beyond the obvious, in cutting the galley down and making the reefer undercounter. I am not master carpenter, but handy and interested in doing it. We both like the original wood which is in good shape. Also curious about making the galley and guest head deck teak and holly. The master head has already been doen, and it looks great.
The wood throughout appears in good to very good shape. It is dark, and a bit dull and likely needs some attention. I have no interest in refinishing with a high gloss, but would like to know what others have used to make it shine a bit more short of doing that.
Any info on these issues would be appreciated.
BTW, the mecahnical look good at first pass, 8V92s at 720 with 826 hrs since MOH done by the last previous owner.

These items could be done fairly easily, but would probably require replacing the cabinets in the island. This may not be somethign for the faint of heart. Another option would be possible if you will not require the dinette. I fyou look on Yacht World at some picture of 50 & 52 convertibles, you will see that some people replace the dinette with a cabinet that can house a refrigerator and Full size Ice maker. you could possibly not need the entire cabinets replaced and just modify them if you had another space for a norcold freezer in where the dinette is and Norcold fridge where the current full size fridge is located.

I have the full size refrigerator and while we origionally though about cutting down the galley, after having the boat and using it for a short time we found that we like the full size frige better. It is much nicer for longer trips because you have so much space.

Good luck with your decision.

Not a big deal to cut down the galley. As Pat stated look on yachtworld 52" and you'll see that many if not most have already cut down galleys. I am in the process of doing so with a local woodworker who says the process is "rather simple". Make sure to decide early which undercounter units and storage you desire. Yachtworld will show many options.

Amtico is a great way to go for the "teak & holly" look or whatever other look appeals to you. I have it in both heads and galley flooring. The 52' C is very good boat, let me know if you have futher questions --- I'll be glad to help.

Thanks.
I can't imnagine that it would be terribly complicated. It would have to include replacement of one part or the liner so there wouldn't be an obvious patch where the fridge is now.
I like the thought of amtico, and I think I could probably do that myself and save some money on the install.
We have a good friend that owns a high end cabinet/design studio and is a phenomal carpetenter. If he weren't interested, he would likely know someone that could do it for us. I don't want to screw it up trying to cut my teeth on a project that would be highly visible.
Still have offer/contract to deal with before I get too excited about all this though.
Stay tuned.

I was walking through this 52 in my mind just now and wanted to ask about the AC controls. In this boat I noticed the older style cruise air control with the knob was accompanied by a typical thermostat from honeywell. I hadn't noticed this on other Hatts, and wanted to know if this was OEM or an add-on. If an add-on, is there anything wrong with it if it works?
I like the SMX controls in my 1995 and was wondering if they are compatible with older units. Something I would consider doing over time.
Thanks

The Honeywell T-stats are OEM for mid-80's Hatts. They are relatively easy to upgrade to the digital controls. I installed the ones from Coastal Climate Control. They now run about $400 each.

Thanks Sky.
I have gone over everything in my head trying to find things that have been bastardized about this boat...but she seems like the real deal.
This will be a big move for me if it works out. My 39 is the biggest boat I have owned, and the 52 even more complex.
Hopefully the plot will thicken towards the end of the week.

Have SMX II in my 52'. Don't know about or if compatibility issues may arise with your units --- you'll want to investigate. Question owner as to if he (she) have the owners manual/documents that were delivered with the boat. The information and drawings contained within will answer most your questions regarding ships systems as they are spelled out in good detail and illustrated very clearly.

The mechanical stats are actually a very good system. If you don't want electronic controls, it doesn't get better than those. They are VASTLY superior to the old "three knob" systems.

They can be converted without much trouble to electronic if you want to.

Thanks for all the info.
My search for a larger C continues.
