  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
As much as I can tell, I have Jabsco 7420-1001 raw water pumps on the boat. 6-71 naturals.

Going to change out the impeller, one of the bronze screws had been replaced with a steel bolt, which of course broke.

So, I pulled the pump out and when I removed the impeller I noticed there was a seal out of place just behind the impeller.

Looking over the exploded parts diagram, it looks like I am looking for a "slinger", which looks like a thin metal retaining ring type of thing, and then a flat rubber seal.

Items 11 and 12 on here.

Anyhow, what I notice on that list is that is says the slinger is for 6400 series pumps only.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Is there more that should be done with the pump while it is out besides replacing these things, or is there a kit that would contain these parts as well, etc?

Thanks!

I send my stuff to the The Flying Dutchman water pump rebuilders so he's my authority but wouldn't you want to replace everything from 11 -17 and screw # 7 to be sure?

Per my notes, that pump was used on Cats, Cummins and Northern Lights as the factory pump.
It is also a General Purpose Pump. Probably why it is on your Detroit.
Could be interesting what model pump DDC delivered when the engine was built.
Unless this was marinized by a different company (Covington, S/S, ect ect)

If it works well for you that is what matters.

Next;
While the pump is in your hands. let me spend lots of your money.

I use a Craftsman mini screw extractor.
This on a reversing drill press will get that old screw out with no damage to the original threads.
I also have used a reversing handheld drill motor, in the morning, when my hands firm.

There are is one (two?) bearings in that pump.
On one end of the shaft is the impeller. Now ad a pulling force belt driven pulley on the other end.
This bearing(s?) is off-center but in the middle of some interesting lateral forces.

I have learned the hard way rebuilding these pumps for myself and customers; Always replace those bearings when the pump is apart.

Then order an over haul kit from Depco Pump.
With or without a new shaft.
This includes everything but the case you just got the bad screw out of.

These two things were somewhat loose behind the impeller when I pulled it.

Does anyone recognize these as the “slinger” (metal piece) & “lip seal”?

Otherwise the pump seems fine, no play in anything, worked fine, I only pulled it because of the stuck bolt, and the I removed the impeller and saw those.

Seems like they were not in the right place.

Those are/were parts to the mechanical seal. Nothing to do with the exterior slinger washer.
The whole seal should be serviceable from the impeller side of the shaft.
