  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' COCKPIT MY-Series II (1993 - 1996)
Newer boat to me. Getting ready for boating season. The marina just quoted me $2400 to change oil and filters on my 6v92’s and 15kw Oman generator…..sooooooo that’s NOT happening. How many gallons of oil does 6v92 hold? Any recommendations on oil filters? Any idea what my Onan needs?

Ouch!! Be prepared though, 5g of 40w has nearly doubled in cost the last year. 5g each for the motors,

NOL 75118 oil 5 gal pail $126.00
FIL 1970 $46.00

Your yard is going to charge twice that.

Plus fuel filter
Plus impeller
Plus all for gen-set
Plus disposal.
Plus floor protection.
Plus oil-sorb towels.

We took 2 days.

$2400 is a good price.

Where ya at, I'll do it for $2300 if your close.

I used to do oil changes on a pair of C32s in about 6 hours. That was 40USG of oil, 2 oil filters, 2 secondaries and 1 racor PER engine. Each gen takes me less than 30 minutes incl fuel filters. I ve always used Rotella 15W40 in gens incl Onans.

So for a pair of 6 cylinders plus a gen it’s a day of labor max, 1 guy. Figure $1000 labor, $300 oil and $200. $2400 is B.O.A.T

For $2400 you could put an oil change system in AND change the oil

Oh Yes, DIY is cheaper.
You may already have an oil change pump on board.
I am sure we all encourage DIYers.

You kids are not thinking where the yard is coming from. Insurance, payroll, mark-up on oil and filters, consumables and all disposal.
Plus, the materials are either delivered or picked up buy somebody(s) on a clock.
Please don't get upset or stop smiling at the yard kids, they have bills to pay also.
From their view and mine, $2400 is a good price if all I mentioned is preformed.

Don't forget the blue deck covering sheets for your self. One drop on the carpet and tracked around, your savings get flushed.

Don't forget; Detroits use 30 or 40W oil, API Spec CF-2 only.

$2400 is insane. I could change mine in a couple of hours. Go round up the oil and filters and DIY. You can find places to take the used oil as well for free. You won't have more than $400 into the whole job. $1200 is a good deal. $2400 is gouging.

I have been on the service side.
Please re-read all of my comments.

I have too. We all have opinions and ours appear to differ.

$160/hr x 4 = 800 + 400 for oil and filters = $1200. So even 15 or $1800 might be acceptable. Not $2400.

I asked, you again did not read my post. I will quote my post for the reading impaired;

There is a lot more to just oil and filters for a proper service. You may have speed read past the extras involved, even for the DIYer.

I did the math on what my guy (very experienced, charges $129 per hour, pays his guys very well, counted 3 5 gallon pails, use to top off after change and then between, and shop materials) would charge me. Based on an 8 hour day 1 guy including travel. Come up with $1750 including tax. So $2400 is high. But if you already have the pump this is one area you can save money and DIY. Plus good to get familiar with your engines and look around for issues. Real DD mechanical work, I leave to them and pay so I don't screw up. They don't even care for the oil change work they are so busy. So win-win. If this is your first time on oil change I and many others on here can help with pointers on how it's done.

Hope your boat has an oil change system. It is much more difficult without an installed system.

Plenty of folks here can walk you through the process and you will learn some things about your boat and your engines in the process. Don't forget to warm the engines up to temp before changing the oil.

I suggest Baldwin or Wix filters. Fram are garbage. Fleetguard are also very good if they make one that fits.

I think $2400 is too high, but a shop is always going to charge you more because of their additional overhead as noted. But there is a difference between covering your overhead and making a reasonable profit on the one hand, and gouging the customer on the other hand.

But he didn’t ask about all that, he said “oil change and filters”. Careful when you cast stones

I m all for shops making a profit but isn’t it already built in the $120-150 labor? Again, it doesn’t take two days to change oil and filters on a small diesel. It is no more than a single day including travel.

I think the consensus is that $2400 is too high

671's, I do my own service, my cost is around $500 in oil and filters. I have oil and filters on hand for next change. there is always some one up north here that has a waste oil burner in their shop and gladly take the 15 gallons of oil and will dispose of the old filters . 4 hours or so of time of which I have a bunch of.

Interesting thread, I happen to have just changed my oil today in my 8-71’s, breakdown: 1. Warm up engines and generator: 1/2 hour
2. Drain oil: 1 hr.
3. Wait for oil to drain to pan:1/2 hour
4.change filter: 15 min per engine
5.fill with oil: 15 min per engine
6.clean up 1/2 hr.
parts: oil 12 gallons times $22.00 per gallon 3 filters at $26.00 each: total $342.00
total time 4 hours
i do have an oil change system on main engines only

Imagine this, after you pump all out from the sump, The next morning pumping from the sump again , then changing the oil filters. you will be amazed how much oil is pumped out and not handling hot oil filters spilling all over the place.
Please give it a try next change and report back.

Ah, I understand my issue now.
Changing “oil and filters”.

I assumed oil and oil filters and fuel filters. Then as a pre season, I assumed impellers.
This is what I was trying to describe in for a shop to perform all of this, the original quote was fair.
I typed and broke down what I thought (maybe wrong now) what a $2400 pre season service may cost.

I tried to point out this long list and another was trying to compare just oil and oil filter only.

I also asked for any objections to ensure what I was talking about (full pre season service, post #3) was what they were comparing to (asked to re-read my version).
Well, it was not understood or taken well.

I’m all in for DIYers. Yes, lots of cash can be saved.
I offered spec’s and part numbers.

Kids, I’m just trying to help. Ammonia broadcasting here is not needed.

When the dust settles, we all agree changing your oil and oil filters does save you a lot of money.
For comparison of shops and services, can you please scan or photo a pic of this shops quote?
A break down of charges would be most help full in understanding how shops far away from Florida does business and billing.
Before I got carried aweigh, I should of asked this of you first.
Thx
Ralph
