Plywood valances confirmed. (pic)

Since I took the 1999 TV out of it, with a built-in VCR, this cabinet is wasted space. I'm going to remove it in the next month or two.

I saw somewhere somebody had built a swivel-up desk here. That's what I want. So, it's open space until someone wants to sit there with a laptop or whatever...you pull-up and secure a desk. I'm not sure how I'll do this, but will.

I'm also not sure how I'll cover that space left on the side of the galley cabinet. It housed an old 500w stereo system, CD changer and all that outdate stuff. I already have a full reefer and separate under-counter icemaker. So, maybe I can make a cabinet door to cover it from the other cabinet I'm removing? I dunno.
I'll have to find a new spot or leave some space for the Hatteras lamp.

Mahogany Plywood.webpYep, it's double sided plywood.

Your first Hat is like our first Hat... We're on a 1986 54' EDMY in Fort Myers, so we're sharing the SWFL pains. Our first real casualty was also a Galleymaid head but in our case the midships pump seized. We converted that toilet to a freshwater Dometic 8700 thru a local father/son vendor thata) came highly recommended and b) like myself, the son is an old Coastie. About a week after the new head was installed, the remaining original functioning Galleymaid for the aft head stopped flushing. Turned out to be hose full of riprap, so I pulled a new hose from the tank aft and problem solved. Now I am working on AC issues. PO seemed to be in a top-off freon mode and I'm scared to think how much $$ he spent on R-22 during that time. We put a lot of thought into this, and installed a 9K BTU MarineAir in the V-berth hanging locker in the alcove in the back. That cools galley and V-berth. Ran hoses and power into generator room - If you're close to Ft Myers, you're welcome to come over and see what we're up against, just PM me... always interested in seeing how someone else solves problems. We're putting another MarineAir in the master stateroom aft and splitting the air flow between the master and the midships stateroom. One thing I tried to do was take advantage of existing ductwork, which worked nicely, and same March AC-5 230v pumps that ran old CrusAirs. Anyway, awesome so far - keep posting!

Get you one of these and put in the panel on the output side of the Nav Lights breaker

https://store.marinebeam.com/hatteras-32v-to-12v-waterproof-dc-dc-converter/

If your 33 volt lights will work on 12 you can use them. If not just change bulbs to 12 volt LED which are much more common

I had similar issue when installing new anchor light. Reached into the way-back machine for what we used to do in a past life, and I found this on Amazon (PS, my boat was converted to 24V under prev owner)... https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EFUHG5C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I used it solely for said anchor light, but if I end up replacing the classic Perko nav lights will have to do some wire tracing to make sure both upper and lower helms are run thru the stepdown.

That's great - thanks for chiming-in! I'm down by Shell Point, just before the Sanibel Causeway off McGregor. One of these days, I'd like to see your MY and talk a little strategery.
My 52C is really in decent condition - just sat for awhile unused. I'm pushing through that initial stage of cleaning, updated and reversing what was bastardized.
Honestly, just trying to clean everything thoroughly is the biggest job!

I was tempted to buy about 20 of those on Alibaba for only 5 bucks each. I just hate to buy direct from the Chicom beast, even if the other sellers bought them there for resale.

That would be great to get together and maybe swap off boat tours. We're in Legacy Harbor behind Joes Crab Shack (and lucky to be in here, which is a long story). I'll PM you my contact info- we can trade emails also.

Let's play "Name that Anachronism."

In that mostly worthless cabinet, which used to house a 20 year old TV/VCR, I found a lot of wires to strange things:

I think we had one of these to turn the TV antenna in the 70s.

I think this is some kind of cellphone system black box?? It has an ethernet cable plug. So, it can't be THAT old.

The ol cabinet has some interesting wires running down into the ER. Who knows?

Between that and some aluminum foil you oughta be able to pick up an Andy Griffith show floating aimlessly in space.....

I wish. My girls and I try to watch a couple episodes each week!

Today's old-Hatt-that's-been-sitting lesson: If you fire up the fresh water pump and it's running but the pressure doesn't come-up, just smack the pressure tank in the ER a dozen times with an open hand.
It released whatever was stuck in there and voila! It's working like a hundred dollars.

Percussive maintenance is frequently quite effective.

OK Hatteras veterans, here's a real test for ya:

I took the mirror off above the master birth, and of course it's this lovely wood. However, the black splotches of glue (which were no longer sticking to the mirror) are stuck like crazy to the mahogany...or afromosia or whatever that is.

That stuff is serious - as hard as a rock. It must be 2-part something. Ironically, the easy-to-remove double-sided tape was still holding but the devil's glue wasn't. Is there some trick to getting that black adhesive off and preserving the panel, or is it a waste of time to even try??

Master Panel Glue.webp

BTW: Today I took a look at the freshwater pump. It's a cheap shower sump pump, 12v, that was hooked directly up to 32v! It was still running, kinda'...probably about to melt and burst into flames at any moment.
I'm always amazed at how some are dumb enough to do things like this, but still manage to attain enough wealth to buy a boat.

I hate say it but you might have to re-Venere after chipping and sanding it off. The black adhesive is surly deep into the grain. I hope I’m wrong and you find it sands off. Let us know your outcome.

That's what I figured, too. But I'm not sanding that granite hard adhesive off...would take all day. All I can think to do is hit it with a chisel. (unless by some miracle someone knows a trick) When it ruins the veneer, I'll order a new sheet I guess.

If those chunks of glue chisel off the veneer without ripping the wood off with it, the first thing I'll do is go buy a lottery ticket....because that'll be my lucky day.

Mahogany veneer and teak oil, and it looks remarkably close to the original.

You might try a heat gun. I’ve had some success with removing the black blobs (mirror mastic).
Good luck.

Since it's already in bad shape, I'd try the heat gun, or lacquer thinner, but not at the same time, if you know what I mean. As far as reveneering it goes, it might be easier to get as much off as you can, sand it flat, and add a layer of 1/8" afromosia plywood and finish to suit. Hard to imagine that it will ever be smooth enough for just veneer.

Actually, a heat gun with lacquer thinner mist (flame thrower) might get it.

I hit it with a chisel late last night and it shatters off like glass. So anyway, it's impossible. Tonight I'll check to see if that panel is symmetrical. If so, I'll pull it off, turn it around and veneer it. That'll cover the goofy speaker hole as well.

Getting that mirror off was as messy and dangerous as I feared. The big mirror below it isn't going anywhere. I'll put one of those upholstered headboards over it...or something.

I’ve used a heat gun and a thin dry wall scraper to get under the mastic. It takes a little time but the black stuff didn’t permeate the wood on mine. Once done a little thinner to clean it up and it was good to go.

Really? Darn it, now you're tempting me to try. The mastic is so hard, it does chip off. I just figured the wood underneath would always be discolored.

This is one of those deals where if I could put it off until much later, I'd take time and try to be a craftsman about it. But right after buying a boat with dozens of projects right now, I'm attacking everything in a fast and not-so-enjoyable fashion.

All I can say what an awesome looking boat! Can't wait till we close on ours.

Seems like it might be simpler to just buy some mahogany or teak, plane it down, router the lower edge and replace what you have altogether.
