Thanks for updating. If you want to stack yours onto of one another you have to do it on a OC. Is only scrolls on the iPad or iPhone.

You can filter by size and year (and state). I pulled about 35 hull numbers (AM series, 53 MY) from 1973 to 1988 and plotted them out. They appear to be both sequential and incremental.

The number of 53's sold per year varied. They sold modestly in the early 70's and then accelerated in the later 70's, through 1980, and then tapered off again. It seems that they built around 250 of the AM series, with about half of them being built during that 6 year boom. The lowest hull number I found was 404 in 1973 and the highest was 649 in 1988. I realize that a few were built before 1973 and a few after 1988, but if you look at the yearly production numbers, there weren't many.

I know that the number 349 was thrown out there for 53 MY units, but does that also include the ED models?

No it does not include the ED. There were 67 ED models built per Steve at Sam’s.

Although the "Yachting Journal" is a good resource, it is far from complete. They pull their data from the USCG documentation database. There are common omissions such as boat builder, hull numbers, year built, etc.... so they often won't show up in a search on "Yachting Journal".

Actually, the majority of the 53' boats in that database were made by AMF. AMF owned Hatteras from 1972 to 1985, which covers most of the 53' model years. Especially the glory years for that model. I mean glory in terms of boats sold.

I managed to pull 38 HINs from that source for AM model boats. I only pulled numbers that were complete and began with "HATAM". Which is the model designator for a 53' MY. From the HIN you can determine the serial number (what we have been calling the hull number) and the year and month of manufacture. I plotted these number by month...

The purpose of plotting them was to see if they were sequential, which they obviously are. There are several instances where the serial numbers differ by only one, which implies that they are also incremental. And finally, the lowest serial number is 388 and the highest is 649, which implies, at least between 1973 and 1988, roughly 261 boats were made, with a surge in the early 70's, and the late 70's to early 80's.

It doesn't really matter that this is only a sample of serial numbers. It is a large enough and random enough sample to determine the distribution of serial numbers. If there were other "weird" serial numbers, you would expect them to show up in this sample. But these look pretty well behaved.
