Since Garmins biz plan has always been “buy and bury “ I wouldn’t count on it

No you don’t. Miss November is a trans-chick with d@$#%&.

I purchased a Garmin Chart plotter, plugged it in and tried it on my 54 Hatteras for a weekend and took it back to West Marine. I have navigated from the Chesapeake to upstate NY and am now in North Carolina on my way to the Keys with 2 i pads loaded with Navionics using dock to dock. What does the Garmin do that I can't get from Navionics? If I am missing something could someone please enlighten me.

I have a Garmin Chartplotter and Navionics. The chartplotter is tied into my autopilot and will follow the line the Garmin does with its auto guidance. To get the auto guidance feature you have to buy a $300 chip. Didn't know that when I bought my system.
Everything works fine but if all you want it a chart plotter to navigate you safely Navionics works fine. I have it as a back up to my Garmin. Actually I use my ipads with Garmin on one and Navionics on the other. I use the ipads on the fly bridge as I didn't feel like spending another $8000 for a MFD Garmin unit.

I have Garmin forward looking and side looking sonar, digital radar with AIS, chartplotter, autopilot a bunch of other electronic Garmin gauges etc. If I had to do it all over again I would of kept my old Robertson auto pilot and just used Navionics to navigate. Lesson learned

Oh, and Randy, please don't let the tranny from Playboy pay me a visit. I like my women to be real women:D

I have navionics on my phone. Raymarine with navionics on the boat and sell and install more garmin than any other brand.

I've never had one come back after install and setup. A 30 minute run through with the owner and they're always happy.

I don't know what unit kismet bought but it may not have been the right piece for the job. West marine has no idea what does what in the garmin line.

I hope they integrate the navionics as they say they will with active captain. Even if it's a add on service it's worth having options. Many of my customers buy the upgraded charts because it gives more views and information.

If the only concern is cost for easy cruising its hard to justify spending money on the real stuff. In contrast a good system for fishing with all the bells and whistles can cross the $50k line easily.

A modern "real" system is robust and integrates radar with overlay (powerful tool for those out in fog), AIS, autopilot, and sounder...plus now all the NMEA2000 features too.

One can't really enjoy this advantage without a fully planned and networked system. It all comes down to how you use it. Since most people never leave the dock but on sunny/clear days, an ipad is fine.

How does the radar overlay work out in an area like the rock pile where the charts have a big error? Seems like it would create confusion.

As much as i hate to i got to go with Scott on this. I have two 5212 touch screens. They are hooked to
a HD64 mile garmin radar that is grate. (you can find a bunch of birds flying within about 8 to 10 miles ) They are also hooked to a garmun auto pilot. The pilot will follow a
heading or track eaven a old old track that has not been cleared. Punch loran numbers in and hit go hold on cause you going that way. In rough sea it is wonderful holds a good straight line. As for the depth finder I could not afford the sideways
stuff stuff but do have the 3D. The thing will go to 3000 fathoms and mark. I have seen it at the canons off Origan inlet. The camer in the bilge is ok it is a Garmin camera the lens angle needs to be wider. I can see the walk way and the edge of the engines
Need two more camers to cover the engine room. They also need to work with less lite. I have to run with both ac and dc lights on to see good detail.
In short the stuff is about 2 years old and have not touched it. Scott will not let me have a update chip but the maps seem to be fine in spite of Scott.

Let me know when you have 2 weeks downtime and I'll talk you through the updates. It's easy but if interrupted causes problems.

Updated charges are different.

Updating charts is different.

I am saddened to see this merger. So looking forward to making my Garmin RADARS and ploters reef material. To each their own.

I'm not familiar with the area so I can't speak from experience BUT I know the charts get better every year and the RADAR overlay and the GPS system can be separated or combined as needed.

Scott, this is south of North Myrtle Beach. The NOAA raster charts have a huge error and a boat show up as being on shore. I don't think they have updated the charts this in the 15 years I have run the ICW.

I get chart updates from garmin and navionics for customers. What charts do you have?

I have stuck with my old Northstar equipment and I can still get it repaired. Simrad bought and buried Northstar and incurred my undying wrath for doing so. I wish someone made a suite of electronics that felt like the Northstar, used Navionics, and worked that well. I just wish. There are other good systems, but nothing quite feels and looks like my 6100i units.

I have a customer with a pair of 6100 units with storm damage. I will say they are nice units for their time but looking at replacements has shown there's newer, faster, better and more accurate units available from garmin, simrad and raymarine (didn't compare to furuno per customers choices) .

I also did a demo of the axis network cameras that can be controlled by a garmin unit and was blown away at the quality and price including a $700 thermal camera that blew my mind.

My point is the newer technology is doing things many never though of because we may not think of that as a need or even a option.
